- “Pokémon” anime voice acting stars Eric Stuart (Brock and James from Team Rocket), Veronica Taylor (Ash) and Rachael Lillis (Misty and James from Team Rocket) reunited onstage to reminisce about the franchise, the movie and the cultural impact of Pokémon at their 2019 Fan Expo Canada Q&A panel in Toronto.
Eric S. Stuart is an American voice actor, voice director, musician, singer and songwriter who worked for 4Kids Entertainment, NYAV Post and Central Park Media. He provides voices for English dubs of anime, cartoons and video games. Some of his most prominent roles include Brock and James in Pokémon, Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh! and Gourry Gabriev in Slayers. His rock band, the Eric Stuart Band, has toured with many acts including Peter Frampton (1999, 2000), Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band (1997) and Lynyrd Skynyrd (1997), and has opened for Jethro Tull (1997), Julian Cope (1995), Hall & Oates (1997, 1998) and Chicago (1995, 1997, 1998). Frampton produced his album Blue, Dressed in Black.
Kathleen McInerney, known professionally as Veronica Taylor, is an American voice actress known for her dubbing work in English language adaptations of Japanese anime, in particular for voicing Ash Ketchum in the Pokémon anime for the first eight seasons. Other voices she has done include Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun from Slayers, Sailor Pluto from Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal, Nico Robin in the 4Kids dub of One Piece, and has voiced video game characters like Cosmos from Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.
Rachael Lillis is an American actress, voice actress and script writer. She studied acting in Boston and New York City and has appeared in various theater productions, animated series and independent films. Lillis's voice work can be heard in shows including Pokémon (seasons 1-8), Cubix, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Revolutionary Girl Utena. She has also lent her voice to video games. She has recorded several audio books including Diary of a Fairy Godmother, for which she performed the voices for about 25 characters. Her narration and character vocals can be heard in PBS programming as well, including Nova, American Masters and Sesame Street.

I just saw Rachael Lillis died today... I'm so sad... I decided to rewatch all her panels... I want to remember the original trio in this way. Talking, having fun moments between them and enjoying theirselves. We'll be missed Rachael, rest in peace!

its not that hard a voice to do at least for misty and she stopped recording it really in like mid 2000's so its not been 22 years...she did jessie until season 8 in 2005 I think...

@@razkable some people's voices just change. Look at how how Tara sands sounds like in voicing Anna in the 4kids dub of shaman king and the Netflix reboot version, but yes Rachel's voice has aged well it seems still.

Pokémon 2000 was EVERYTHING. The ending score for that movie when Melody is playing Lugia's song gives me chills. I also love it when Misty saves Ash because I love Misty getting to be the heroin. I also love the first movie. I can't watch Pikachu cry over Ash's petrified body without tearing up.
I ship Ash and Misty pretty hard and tell myself that when they were older they got married.
The Lugia orchestrated song at the end and The theme song The Power of One by Dona Summers was and still one of the best songs that I have ever heard

I'd love to meet all three of them in person. I've been a big fan of Veronica Taylor, Rachael Lillis, and Eric Stuart for years as well as the voice of Meowth for the first eight seasons of Pokémon. I'd really like to show them my Meowth voice, and I believe that it sounds almost exactly like the original one if you know what I mean.

I used to be able to do Ash and Misty both pretty well but I'm a singer and the hoarseness of Ash's voice hurts my throat lol
I just started S9 last night, which will be the last season I watch, and I was gonna stop at the end of S8 because I knew they were replaced, but with 1 season left in that series I might as well wrap it up. But hearing Veronica say "I'm the star" in Ash's voice like that made me smile! They will always be the real OG's!

I wish TPCi would rehire Rachel and Eric as Misty and Brock, they already rehired Rachel with no issues back during DP. Sadly Veronica will never officially get to voice Ash again.
TPCi got some 4Kids, but not all. I mean TPCi are moron for not getting all 4Kids voice actors due to expensive and TPCi couldn’t do it they wanted to cut the cost and find cheap voice actors to find replace 4Kids voice actors. TPCi has a lot of money and being so cheap for not getting them. They despite the fans and never care about the Pokémon anime at all, funny part they said, they were going to use all Japanese music since Season 9 and they never did and lied to fans just kept some Japanese music like 4Kids did.
If I were making Pokémon, I would do a time travel episode where Ash goes back in time and encounterss and earlier version of himself and Sarah Natochenny and Veronica Taylor get to act together.

I would be tempted to say it's too late, just because it would feel weird having the old cast back when Meowth is sadly no longer with us.

pokemon was already huge in japan from jump due to the show and games and merch and due to the games in the west before the dub was made but its nice to think people actually believe there was a time it was not huge or that it started in the west after all these years ...thats cute...not everything takes time or will get close to as big as it..it will always be...

@Rhodey Robby Essentially, Viz Media threw Canada under the bus. Viz Media had announced that Sailor Moon '92 would originally return to North America on May 19, 2014, but on that date, it was only put onto Hulu, a video service only available in the US. And it initially posted its new dub only onto Hulu, which means Canadians instead got lines from that new dub spoiled on social media without having any access to it. Viz Media's anime licences are now considered null and void here in Canada.

@@Zephyr-db1qv im talking about the creations of the game franchises before the shows not the dub dates come on now...thats not what I meant...smdh I get she didn't realize digimon was already out when pokemon was dubbed since we didn't get it until 1999 and this is pre internet really so she was ignorant to that fact when she frist saw it but it is true around that time in the mid to late 90's kids collective battle anime was huge in japan and many shows followed pokemon and digimons lead Beyblade monster rancher and metabots yugioh were some of the popular ones...but many existed

its kinda funny how dub actors think they can tell the writers what to do..and they wonder why they had strikes In 2006-2007 lol or were replaced and why 4kids sold the rights....usually when new writers came in they had to write it closer to the original scripts so of course satoshi is going to be meaner or cruder than you remember from years back veronica like he isn't as virtuistic or nice as the scripts you read him being..thats a total change of who he is as a character for marketing reasons they got away with but when new writers came in with less control of the scripts being paid less they don't have time to rewrite the entire character like those writers had so now they have to make the lines closer to who he really is to save time as the show was well known by then so you don't have to market to new fans anymore we know the show so just shut up and do it...if she watched the original show satoshi is a little jerk a little idiot jerk with no manners at least by japan standards......
The writers strike was union-based, WGA. Pokemon was nonunion according to what the voice actors have said at panels in videos I've watched. So the strike would not have affected the show. As far as everything else in your comment, I don't know, it seems to be all speculation.
@@toadsaage7711 imagine how ignorant we sound to Japanese fans?...like I enjoy the dub acting and scripts outside of some cringe comedy changes but whats wrong with calling them by their actual names pr keeping the original music and theme song just sing it in english why change the music and lyrics totally?...4kids is lame..most animes by 1998 were using original names and music.....its just hard to listen to names like misty brock and gary now a days because I know the actual names...we didn't create the characters...its like if you were called some dumb nickname not your birth name by strangers its just wrong and bizarre..people don't know they stay ignorant so they still call them by these made up names...imagine if goku was still zero like he was in the harmony gold dub for dragonball when it started in 1994...how weird would it be if everyone grew up on that dub called him zero to find out his name is goku...well the reality is we kinda did that with bulma whose manga name is blooma yet somehow it became bulma in the dub the way lunch became launch somehow?...akira likes his puns for his names so when you change their names they lose all meaning...lunch and blooma are funny names...
@@razkable Japanese people change English names all the times, especially in movies, bizarrely enough they even translate English titles into other English titles that have nothing to do with the movie. Americans don't think Japanese people are ignorant, doubt they care about us either. And why would we use their original names with puns that only make sense in Japanese? Misty is a name that immediately makes sense in English, it tells us she is associated with water, it sounds like a plausible enough name but also sounds like a cartoon character name so it also just fits. Why sacrifice those tiny details that make the show that much more accessible to children so you can brag online about how cool you are for knowing the original names?
I know their dubbers and they have to appeal to americans but can I just say hearing the names ash brock and misty makes me cringe...can they just call them by their real names satoshi kasumi and takeshi...please?....is it that hard to ask?...I already have to listen to their dub experiences with changes made to the script and songs and everything as if that was the original work and not changes 4kids made so can you just be accurate on the names at least 21 years later?....please....god it kills me...theres no misty or brock or even ash in japan..its like if you went to japan and they renamed spongebob squarepants, sponge lee and something else then squarepants like rectangular bottoms instead of bob and pants... it just is weird you know?..and kinda whitewashing a character you did not create...satoshi is named after the creator which is why the show focuses on this kid..hes what the manga main character is named after too...not ash...its an homage and its cute since without him we don't have this franchise and when he dies in the movie pikachu says satoshi pika-pi...thats what he calls him...its literally the most cute thing lost in translation...but I digress

I mean, they kept Goku's name from Japan and no one seemed to have a problem with it, so I don't get why they had to change the Pokemon characters' names. This is a really underrated take, but I agree 100%.
Yeah usually these days when they dub they keep the Japanese names but I think 4kids was trying to make it as appealing to a western audience of children as possible.
This is the most whinny take. If I went to Japan and they called him the Japanese equivalent of SeaSponge Rectangle Trousers, I wouldn't feel so obnoxious to go into their dubs panel and say I'm American and I know the real names and stop using your dumb Japanese versions because they make me cringe 🙄. Ya know what, they probably already do have different names for them but I wouldn't know because wgaf what some other country calls a cartoon character.
