- GearWrench (amzn.to/1OFwVTD) Serpentine Belt tool Versus the Snap-on (goo.gl/zuy5lo) Serpentine Belt tool. Both tools are awsome and will get the job done. If i only had to choose one kit it would be the GearWrench kit.
Thanks for this awesome review! I really appreciate the insight and experiences you shared using these tools. A lot of other reviewers miss those important points about real-world applications.
Great video---thanks for taking time to film and share this! Was already looking for another tensioner tool, your side-by-side comparison helped me choose the Gear Wrench set.
Thanks again!
Snap on and Gearwrench are great companies, can't hardly go wrong. Gearwrench has really put their focus on ingenuity. Great review, thanks 👍
Thank you. And I agree awesome tools.
Gearwrench is made by the Apex Group. When the people in hock to the tool truck guy contend that Stanley, Blackhawk, Crescent, Husky, and Craftsman are "junk" but Armstrong and Gearwrench are "kinda" OK, they are less than forthright as Apex is the same manufacturer for all of them. The trademarks Mac, Facom, Black and Decker, Proto, Blackhawk, Craftsman, etc, are owned by Stanley. What's in a name? $25 vs. $135, Buyer beware.
Good review and I know how tough it is being a young mechanic with a family and going on the tool trucks, it's hard at first but hang in there it will get better!
I like the versatility of the gearwrench set up... pretty nice
Awesome bud! Thank you for posting this. I have BOTH on the way as I write this and I'm EXCITED!!!!!!!!
Today 11/17/17 the Gearwrench kit is 37$ on Amazon. No brainer...
I got the Gearwrench tool on a prime day sale I believe. Very happy with it.
Thanks for the video. It's a good job. Just remember that the gear wrench is a pass through design and that might help in those hard to reach places.
Your welcome.
Toyota Rav4 serpentine belt tensioner bolt size is 19 millimeter, so 18 mm is useless! I hope Snap-on new on should have that size, cz it will be USELESS if U got 18 mm socket when U need 19 mm!
Being a heavy truck and equipment tech,,The Gearwrench Rules,,Why you say,,the 2 piece can get around way better,,had this set a long time and works great
good review bro. i actually have quite a bit kf gear wrench tools and i think their up there with snap on tools
Rich Piano 5% Muscle 95% Oil thanks man.. Gearwrench makes some nice tools for sure.
Heyy I have the gear wrench set had it since 2002..let's not get it twisted. It was a good set for it's time. I. I've been in a number of situations where the gearwrench set was useless... For today's Vehicles it really needs to be updated. Or superseded
Quote of 2016, “You’d be better off owning both, that’s just the way it is.”
I noticed Gearwrench has one with a flex head model. Not sure, but I think it is a locking head.
Good video. At 5:50 we see Snap On passing off the original open gear ratcheting wrench design from 1920 as state of the art for $120 + tax. Snap On is the same firm pushing the shiny chrome and "ooh it feels good" contour ratchet to lure people into debt, but apparently for the close quarters the open gear riveted ratchet works just fine. The female ratchet design is 100 years old; see the Mossberg ratchet. ruclips.net/video/8OYloL8C7m4/видео.html
i agree snap on certainly overcharges for their tools. Yes they are good quality but i cant in all honesty say the price they charge is justifiable. Yup many of Snap on tools are old technology that many lazy people get sucked into buying because of the "easy payment" options... I tell the new kids all the time that there are other viable less expensive options out there if you just bother to read a few reviews you will know whats good, whats junk, and whats over priced.... But that old saying always proves to be true "you can lead a horse to water but you cant make em drink"..
@@Autofixpals Right on. You are good leader to your apprentices.
Great video and comparison.....Thanks
Your welcome. Thanks for commenting.
Just discovered your channel you got some great vids thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching... More videos coming soon!
hey if you like to watch tool tours i have quite a few on my channel
+John Gibson awesome I'll check them out.
I wish I had this when I had to replace belt tensioner on honda cr-v I've never had such a hard time in my life that damn thing is so stiff I'm buying this set
Nice review cheers mate!
The gear wrench set is way better for the price then the snap on or any other brand
A_aron 37 yes the gearwrench set is an excellent value. very flexible.
my gawd, listening g to that air wrench all day would drive me nuts, get a Milwaukee high impact torque bro
Is the snap on the lisle tool? Looks exactly the same. I need to buy one but I need the slimmest. Is for a BMW X1 is little above 1/2 inche clearance
i dont think i have seen the lisle version. Snap-on doesnt usually rebrand lisle tools. But its possible. You can always use the GearWrench and grind down the adapter that you need to make it fit. Not ideal, But sometimes you gotta do what you have to.
Lol. Taylor Swift playing in background
Fifthcell only way to get pumped up in the shop
... No comparison, both tools have different applications... the Snap-On Kit came before the Gearwrench Set, plus use and technology changes constantly ... "Quality and Service have a Value" remember that !!!!
JR Lopez I agree quality and service has a value..I use both sets..I appreciate the convenience that Amazon affords me with same day delivery or 2 day delivery on most tools and gearwrench warranty is very easy to deal with. I can usually get a warranty gearwrench tool within a few hours delivered to my job via advance Auto parts. Or 2 or 3 days via Gearwrench.. people tend to have this misconception that's it's complicated to warranty tools that don't come from the tool truck. I find it to be opposite or equal. ..
Just avoid DeWalt... TERRIBLE support and service.
Gearwrench has excellent quality and excellent and speedy warranty claims
Gearwrench sold
Im assuming the snap on was made 10+ year ago and within that timeframe their always other tool making new innovation tool with similar purpose. Beside you cant compare tools without showing it on certain make n model.
Symon Channel the snap-on belt tensioner tool in the video is the latest, it has been warrantied out recently and it has not changed much other than teeth count. The one in the video has more teeth count than it did when I originally purchased it over 10 years ago. There really is no need to change the design other than adding more adapters. Here is the link to the latest Snap-on belt tensioner store.snapon.com/Belt-Tensioning-Tools-9-pc-Ratcheting-Belt-Tensioning-Wrench-Set-P646104.aspx see for your self it is the same as it was 10 years ago..
Belt tensioner tools don't really need to be shown in action because they are simply a low profile Socket and ratchet nothing more or in some cases a square drive be it 3/8 or 1/2 inch.. The fact still remains that the gearwrench set is more versatile than the snap-on set. I know this for a fact because I own both sets and i use both sets. I also use EZ-RED xl ratcheting wrenchs to do belts. I use whatever works. Usually the gearwrench set gets it done.

f snap on.... gearwrench is more than fine and saves a butt load of money
That's ignorant.
+Joshua Gregg why do you feel its ignorant?
+JOE FORD DIY agreed!
I bought the milwaukee battery impacts. The new friction ring 1/2" thay outs out 1100 ft/lbs and the 1/4" thay puts out around 100 ft/lbs. You dont need anything else lol. all together I might have spaent MAYBE $300 haha. Works good for what I need.
Today 10/11/2022 it’s $37.
I have it understood that Snap On no longer makes these, and now just sells a rebadged gear wrench set
They still sell the snap on tool in this video as a blue point tool. But you may be right.
The new Snap On set is improved. Compare apples to apples, not new to old.
That is a new snap on belt tool. It was warrantied a few months ago and i did see improvements. More teeth. Most of my bits for the snap on kit are very old, but 1 of them was warrantied a few months back as well and it looks very much like my older bits. There isn't anything wrong with either the gearwrench set or the SO set. You would be best suited to own both. But if i could only buy one set. the gearwrench set is what I would get.
+Auto Fix Pal The bits are what I was referring too. The square but you compared has been redesigned.
Joshua Gregg fuck you
I hear a Snap On MG725 impact gun in the background, they make a certain sound my coworker has one. Lol
+Tyrone Jones no that's a mg725 I have one and wouldn't trade it for its weight in gold and he's right they have a very distinctive sound
Yeah its a co-worker using that gun. It's ridiculous Loud for no reason at all. I constantly have to use my quiet air cat to break loose bolts that his SO gun doesn't have the power to get loose. I don't really see the value there.
+Auto Fix Pal get it repaired, MG725 is more than enough.
+Auto Fix Pal Yes i have the Air Cat and its stronger than my coworkers MG725 and it got repaired also. All airlines have same static and working psi.
+Tyrone Jones Shut up.
