- ‘At the very highest level, there are a lot of people who like the pressure and thrive on it. Personally, I'm a bit anxious. I find the constant pressure of results a burden.
For more than an hour, the coach of Reims, currently 7th in McDonald's Ligue 1, talks about his childhood between Slovenia and France, his footballing roots with a father who was a Yugoslav international and a grandfather who coached Austria.
Elsner also talks about his varied experiences as a coach in Slovenia, Cyprus, Belgium and France (Amiens, Le Havre and now Reims), which have forged his convictions as a manager and his playing principles. ‘The coach is there to convince the players of the ideas, the way the team should play to succeed, win, take a direction together and give ourselves the means to achieve it,’ he sums up.
Since the start of the season on the Stade de Reims bench, Elsner has been blossoming in a young squad, supported by a number of experienced players, which is meeting his expectations. Creating new skills is fulfilling,’ he enthuses. I enjoy developing the players individually in a game that can only be played as a team.
Reims host Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday (9pm, on DAZN) in Ligue 1 matchday 12.
