I'll never get sick of watching this! One of my favorite dance performances. After seeing him on So You Think You Can Dance I was so impressed with his skill and character portrayal. I had also never heard Jacques Brel before, and now this is one of my favorite songs because I picture this whenever I hear it!
Stunning... such control and technique as a young boy.. he has always been an amazing talent! I remember seeing this back in 2006 and thinking HE WILL BE ONE THE GREATS... and he is proving it.
This is just lovely. For some reason he reminds me of the young Oksana Baiul, only a ballet dancing male. Same charisma and charm and sort of not taking self too seriously....not to mention technicque.
Danil is so talented. His dance is so energetic, so flexible and gracefull. He reminds me the way Nureyev used to dance. Simkin is my favorite dancer... Best Regards from Peru.
Daniil danced "Les Bourgeois" at Rossetti Theater, in Trieste (Italy) on 19th of July: he has been AMAZING!!! I will never forget his performance...A load, long-lasting applause came from the audience for him. Daniil is a great artist!
i saw you both times you've danced in Athens with Zaxarova and your GALA. you are amazing, an angel that dances..but the one thing i'll never forget was how the audience those nights high jump during " Les Bourgeois"
Outstanding! As a panelist and adjudicator, I watch dance videos every day. Daniils is without any doubt an extraordinary talent. His perfect execution of tremendously difficult steps and his charming personality are exclusive. He's like a diamond of unsurpassable quality. Susana B. Williams Director Dance-Forms Productions
And Daniil never ever went to a ballet school... all home trained by his parents! Her mother called him „her own little experiment“. It’s wonderful that his parents not only gave him the technical foundation, but also the confidence and the joy to perform on stage. How beautiful to see him here- I wouldn‘t believe that this was a competition and he was so young, if I didn‘t know this. He looks so relaxed as this was a showing- off performance at school.
Just saw him perform this piece last night in Athens (December 2009), and I think he has now refined it to the point of perfection. The leaps and piruettes seem even more effortless that in this video; as if just part of taking a stroll in the park.
All things considered, I wouldn't call myself a ballet person. I only speak English, which makes it hard to understand many things about it. When I watched Swan Lake, all I could think was "The men's leotards are so tight, I could give them a prostate exam without them ever getting undressed." But in spite of my cultural illiteracy, I have absolutely fallen in love with Daniil Simkin. Even I can tell he has an amazing amount of talent, both as a dancer and as a performer.
I was there too ^^ It's worth for me to fly all the way from Hong Kong to Taiwan, I envy you Taiwanese could have such a successful ballet gala very year, well done Miss Wong (the MC that night)..... Wish I can come next year too...
Daniil, I think this charmed me most of all your videos. I'm new tocomputer, but watched Russian Folk Dancing with Red Army Chorus, and other the Cossack dance, and saber dance, and your performance is a tribute to your forbearers. I loved this one the best. To have that acting ability at such a young age, you were taught by people with real soul who breathed it right into you.
What I love most about this particular piece is that so clearly communicates a story. I may not know the words, but I still feel like I know what is going on. GREAT facial expressions!
dancing is about expression and entertainment and he does just that!! I saw him too on the 12th and I completely disagree with you, he is expressing this song and the atmosphere perfectly. So young but so mature!
Also, Jacques Brel is one of the greatest creative or performing artists to have lived and worked in the past century or so, and you do him justice w. this piece, so thanks!
Amazing! Performed with such style and class.... simply amazing! It brings back so many memories, both painful and sweet, yet all enjoyable. Complete ecstasy. *sigh*
WHo choreographed this? Same person coach him? Fantastic performance, very clever number -- wonderful mercurial transformations of posture, attitude, and such refined positions. THe French mime bits are exquisite. The tricks are great, especially the way he hangs in the barrel turns, as if he'd actually stopped there a second. Nijinsky was famous for being able to seem to do that -- an amazing flashing effect, burns it onto your memory.
Found my answer; you might want to know, the dance was choreographed by "de Vlaamse choreograaf Ben Van Cauwenbergh, voormalig stersolist van Ballet Vlaanderen en het Londen Festival Ballet...."
Wonderful! You're so marvelous (only got to see you dance live once, in SHADOWPLAY w. ABT--I instantly became a fan). Nice to see this character-full piece, & to see work by Ben Van Cauwenbergh, who was an excellent dancer himself. Keep dancing, please!
hmmm this didn't impress me on so you think you can dance last night when he performed it. but now i think differently of him after seeing this video. excellent job, very talented.
@Jennifer71 Thanks for reminding me of this. It will have to go in with my Valentine's message to many sisters. Did you see the one when he and his father are dancing together! That was a thriller in manilla, too. But we must give our regards to Jacques Brel as Muse, and puppeteer too.
Daniil Simkin was so young and he completely got the subtility of the lyrics (yes, there is one) combinated to the choreography, as if it was his own language or as if someone had explained it to him for days. He nails the whole thing. I found François Alu's version - who is a dancer I really like a lot - and to me he completely misses the point. He's pushy and for somebody whose first language is French he looks like he doesn't know what the song is about. I was so desappointed. Of all the versions I've seen on RUclips, Daniil Simkin is the best by far.
I think he's a wonderful actor! I've seen him dancing this for real and I can assure you that he has a lot of charisma and talent. And you compare him to Nureyev, but have you seen what Rudi did with the Muppets? He had a great sense of humor and he would have liked a lot Les Bourgeois if he were still alive, God bless him...
@Bhoeble my first comment, if you go back, was on the audience's attitude to simkin's performance in athens, not to simkin. so, what I meant is that applauding to his jumps specifically, shows that the audience considered his dance as if watching ice-skating or gymanstics. a couple of days before simkin, the zurich ballet acted in athens megaron, and the room was half empty. so, all in all, my objection was on the criteria of the people, and not in any case on his dance.
Anyone who likes this piece should also see the other videos of it on RUclips, performed by Marcin Krajewski and Dmitri Simkin (Daniil's father) It's fascinating to compare them. I think maybe Daniil is technically best, but maybe he is a bit too tidy in his movements to be playing a drunk. Daniil seems to play the character as a bit of a smart-aleck. Marcin seems to have the most fun with it, and Dmitri seems to make it a bit more tragic than the others.
I was in the audience at the 2006 USA IBC for this performance, and here I am still watching it in 2015. Daniil is absolutely incredible!
I don't know how to stop watching this video. I watch this every year since I actually saw this stage. A video that I'll never forget.
I'll never get sick of watching this! One of my favorite dance performances. After seeing him on So You Think You Can Dance I was so impressed with his skill and character portrayal. I had also never heard Jacques Brel before, and now this is one of my favorite songs because I picture this whenever I hear it!
Just watched him perform this exact same performance yesterday! What an amazing artist, he was definetely the star of the show.
At Tampere-talo? I was there with my mother and were totally in awe by the performance.
Stunning... such control and technique as a young boy.. he has always been an amazing talent!

HE IS ASTOUNDING! I saw him live and was awestruck ever since. I showed him to my friend and she's also been hooked. x] He's the best!
Yeah, me tooooo!!!! I'll NEVER get sick of watching anything he dances!!!! He's just WONDERFUL!!!!!!
Spectacular. Both the dancing/technique, and the commitment with which he encompasses the song's lyrics. The choreography for this is first-rate. :)
Daniil danced "Les Bourgeois" at Rossetti Theater, in Trieste (Italy) on 19th of July: he has been AMAZING!!! I will never forget his performance...A load, long-lasting applause came from the audience for him. Daniil is a great artist!

ahhh I love that last phrase, the sequence of jumps. the speed at which he attacks that first jump is just great
I was there, too. the audience was almost going crazy. Daniil is really a shining star.
this guy is brilliant; best male dancer I've ever seen.
oh..my god....his lines, his techniques are just...wonderful
Outstanding! As a panelist and adjudicator, I watch dance videos every day. Daniils is without any doubt an extraordinary talent. His perfect execution of tremendously difficult steps and his charming personality are exclusive. He's like a diamond of unsurpassable quality.

He's brilliant! I saw him last weekend up at Bard College. He is one of the great ones. Plenty strong, and you are completely wrong about his acting.
Kompliment!!!

That video made me WANT to learn ballet. We're the same age, and that kid has amazing coordination, really inspiring.
speechless...I saw the last day of the Athenian performance @ Pallas theatre... I really have no words to describe such a talent! a great BRAVO!
And Daniil never ever went to a ballet school... all home trained by his parents! Her mother called him „her own little experiment“.

Erm, his parents were ex Bolshoi ballet dancers & master teachers. Have you seen the video of Daniil dancing "I Did It My Way" with his father?
Just saw him perform this piece last night in Athens (December 2009), and I think he has now refined it to the point of perfection. The leaps and piruettes seem even more effortless that in this video; as if just part of taking a stroll in the park.
J'adore!!!!!Il n'y a rien à rajouter.
THIS IS AMAZING! My ballet teacher showed me it and said that he was 16 or around that age! unbelievable!
All things considered, I wouldn't call myself a ballet person. I only speak English, which makes it hard to understand many things about it. Oh how wonderful I saw you perform this live at the Vail dance festival! I loved this piece a lot it was one of the best performances of the evening!

What I love most about this particular piece is that so clearly communicates a story. I may not know the words, but I still feel like I know what is going on.

BRAVO DANIIL
hmmm this didn't impress me on so you think you can dance last night when he performed it. but now i think differently of him after seeing this video. excellent job, very talented.
This is the only dancer i have ever seen that could do a biography of Gene Kelly and make it work.
