I’ve loved fall my whole life! It reminds me of back home in Aurora, IL. Man those leaves sucked and during late fall, that snow messed us up! We were in an urban area, but it still had all those fall smells! Fall has a nostalgic feeling and the fall is just the best season! The leaves and decomposing smell is what was most noticeable and it is my favorite! Man those fall smells aren’t as prevalent in Florida but I plan on moving back to the urban north (hopefully back to Aurora, IL) and smell those heavenly smells again! Those times back then were rough for us, went through poverty, and it was unsafe after 9 PM, but we still had all of that fall stuff!😂 Fall and Winter are easily my favorite seasons and every time I reminisce on those memories, it’s hard to not wanna go back!
Whenever I tell people I can smell the season change - even on a hot dry Southern California day - people look at me like I’m delusional. I can’t explain it, or describe it, but there’s a subtle scent every season has. I love Fall the most though. The oddest smell that makes me happy is scotch tape. I used to help my mom wrap our Christmas presents every year and the smell of that tape always caught my attention. Even now, whenever I smell it - no matter how far removed I am from Christmas - the scent takes me back and makes me sooo happy.
the pumpkin hype in fall is only in the USA in the Netherlands pumpkins are there in the fall but households don't use pumpkins to carve or make food from we don't put it in everything
Olfactory receptors each recognize more than one odorant molecule, and each odorant molecule activates more than one receptor type, so a few hundred types of receptors allow us to recognize thousands (maybe even millions!) of different smells. What's your favorite fall smell?
Fall in Scotland smells like dampness and pee, all the leaves which have not been swept up so animals have drowned them in pee and they are still just decomposing on the ground and the rain won't stop.
That's definitely not as nice as the smell of pumpkin pie. But if you're curious, we did a video a while back on the chemistry of pee that you might find interesting... ruclips.net/video/BTFw5g0WzJ8/видео.html
It's amazing what experiences you "remember" simply because of the way something smells. I still love this channel and the deeper chemistry behind the topic of the video. Please keep up the good work everyone and Happy Thanksgiving Eve!
Thing is, are those connections really immutable? I imagine first contact and first associations are really strong, but probably not really permanent.... kinda like memories, perhaps they could be overwritten given the right reinforcement or circunstances. Here's something weird - I don't really have strong smell associations with autumn season... because I live on a tropical country. :P People living in the southern hemisphere you'd imagine have things all backwards too... but pop culture has a pretty strong influence. Xmas down here is in the midst of summer, and yet lots of us still associate it with snow, cold and whatnot because of cultural reinforcement. Real experience though, it's me sweating profusely day and night with electric fans as close to my face as possible in relatives' homes feeling like an endless sauna of misery. xD Love my relatives, but you know.
I saw "why does fart smell so good" as well. I've found that people who generally eat healthy have pleasant-smelling farts. I don't usually eat balanced meals, but my farts smell nice too!
My favorite thing about fall is getting pumpkin spice lattes with vegan plant-based oatmilk. I also love almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, cashew milk, etc. Cow's milk is disgusting and extremely harmful to the planet and to human health and the cow's themselves, though. #GoVegan
All seasons have their distinct smell to me, not just Autumn. It's sad how most never pick it up.

Thank you for bringing the delightful smells of fall around the USA and the connection of chemistry and emotion into our lives. Bring it on!

4:12 YES! I don't think I've ever actively thought about that, but it's definitely one of those powerful, happy memory smells for me. :)

I read fart at first glance instead of fall

Comfort smells, similar to comfort foods.
Best thing about autumn is autumn migration.
The Boys Of Summer by Don Henly describes my fall pretty much spot on.
3:07 Does that happen same with sounds(music)? Sometime we feel nostalgic while listening to a particular type of music
I have a fragrance called Foxcroft fields from Solstice Scents. It smells like fallen leaves, soil, and spices. I love ir!
_That's_ what it is that throws me about Parmesan cheese.
Woah! Nice Collab

Decaying leaves smell like corn flakes.
