    QUESTIONS (Too Long, didn't watch version):
    [1:23] Q: Will facial customisation be static and can only choose from a preset from heads or can we manipulate certain aspects using morphology.
    A: You will be able to choose from a head that you like and from there you can change the skin colour, eye colour, hairstyle and some minor alterations to the physical shape.
    [3:38] Q: How customisable will hairstyles be?
    A: They will be fairly customisable, you can choose from an array of styles and change their colour, but you won’t be able to alter their shape specifically, but you can choose to have a hairstyle on any head you’d want.
    [5:10] Q: Can I reproduce my likeness in the character creator?
    A: You should be able to get pretty close.
    [5:51] Q: How long does it take to model someone’s face in the game?
    A: A long iterative process that includes up to two hours for just the basic scanning of the face plus all the post processing work dealing with the data and multiple maps and shaders.
    [11:27] Q: Backers faces in the game, is it possible?
    A: They’ve considered the idea, talked about it but to be determined. They would want all the characters to have the same level of fidelity as any of the top tier characters and any home photogrammetry might give them information/textures that might not be up to standard of the quality they need.
    [14:11] Q: How soon will the new heads be implemented and how editable will they be?
    A: Not in 2.5, but it will be iteratively implemented along the way afterwards. We’re very close now.
    [16:30] Q: What quality of faces will we see on our characters, NPCs, other players?
    A: What you saw in the Morrow tour, forget that quality existed as they’ve moved on and have improved the fidelity. They have tier 0,1,2,3 characters and the character you saw in the Pupil to Planet was a tier 2 character. A tier 2,3 character will hold up to a tier 0 character because it’s about the small details and animations in the tier 0,1 characters that makes them so detailed. The lowest tier is 10,000 polygons and the highest is 40,000, but the higher quality tier’s allow the full range of the actors emotions such as Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Mark Strong to be displayed in the game which is why they’re a tier 0 and others are 1,2,3.
    [21:07] Q: Will animations adapt to your character as they get older/recover from injuries?
    A: They’re planning to do animations specific to injuries, want to have the impact of an injury reflect on the character’s animation. It’s a really cool idea to have older person locomotion and they have younger ones so it may not be that difficult to move you through those sets but they don’t have the inputs yet.
    [22:31] Q: With character fidelity, how do you plan on keeping the resource cost down?
    A: They’ve made huge strides so far. For example a character used to be 300 megabytes in memory, and now it’s down to 30 megabytes and the animation joints went from 1,000 to 183. There’s still more to be done, but they’re working on other ways to bring costs down further without losing fidelity.
    [26:18] Q: Which character design approach is Star citizen using? Traditional where you choose from a number of presets or being able to edit vertex points within certain ranges or whole new approach?
    A: Mix of both, start with a preset face and you choose face/hair colour/eye colour/etc and then mix and match from a combination of heads and you can move things around but not actually bringing in another mesh or other character information.

    Really like the new format with inside-footage of the technology they're talking about.
    Also like that Chris isn't there alone anymore. Way better to have someone from the department the questions relates to.

      I'm also loving the new format! We are starting to get those exciting little clips that actually show how the heads are doing, and it's simply just delicious eye-candy to get to see how good these characters are looking in terms of detail and fidelity. Even though it takes time to build the scene for those clips and render them out if they didn't have them already, I think it's still really worth it to show people how good it's looking so far!

    I really like the idea of CR hosting 10FtC with guest developers and artists, with content from the game spliced into the segment. Not that it was boring before, but this change really holds your attention and adds a lot to the production value. Well done. Also, it's great to have one of my questions answered by CIG! I had asked about the old man animations, but was surprised to see some content related to FPS injuries in their response. Can't wait to make players limp like that in Star Marine hahaha

      Now I'm imagining my character not being able to tell his team the situation because the opposition shot him in the face and blew his jaw off.
      'Course, then he gets to look like Darth Malak, so not a total loss. ;)

    Honestly, when the hair and eye shaders are finished and the skin shader is fine tuned this is gonna be hard to beat. Few games have ever put so much attention into character faces. Perhaps Naughty Dog have done something relevant, but that's about it. Everybody else has focused pretty much on environments and materials... And here are you guys, pushing everything forward like mad scientistis! You're all crazy, I say. And I like it!

      I remember when HL2's Source engine came out from Valve. The facial quality moved the industry into a whole new level of immersion.
      I hope the same thing will happen again with SC.

      I remember when I first got HL2 in 04 my graphic card was so bad that the models didn't have pupils in their eyes, just plain white eyeballs. Ground textures in vanilla WoW were huge deformed squares.

    18:08 for reference, a level in spyro would only go up to about 5000-6000 polygons... a character/courier in Dota 2 is generally close to that amount as well...

    I like this new format! It's good you focus on a specific topic and let people only ask questions on that. This prevents repeated questions found in old 10forC episodes. Also, being able to see samples of what Chris and his guest, Josh, is talking about is great. The quality and fidelity of these character models are amazing!
    I hope to see more of this in the future. It would be nice if this can be a monthly or maybe bi-monthly series, with Chris being so busy. Also, it's good to see Chris back in 10 for the Chairman. Keep up the good work. :)
    Another notable mention, I don't think teddy 🐻 was injured much in the making of this episode. And the lighting of this video looks good. Nice video improvement!

      Its very expensive to do L.A NOIR started it didn't sell enough copies to justify the cost, most games don't go this far in a video game, its more common in big budget films like the last Star Wars.

      L.A. Noire did something far, far more crazy: 4D scans without face rigs (heads didn't even have eyeballs, it was all 3D scans in motion - 3D recordings played in game in real-time)

    Whole game production and quality feels like J.J.Abrams Star Wars films. I hope that most GPU's will burn and reincarnate as Pascal generation 8-D

    Seeing a bunch of player clones running around in yellow caps was a little unsettling at first, but it really helps appreciate the new features when released. It's fun to see these developments enhance game play over time. Great work! I'm excited.

      I'm okay with waiting longer since it's clear that CIG are making leaps with their technology. If it means getting the dream I could wait another few years. No-one wants to release a game early that falls short from expectation.

    Is it just me or do the eyes not focus differentially? ie: when looking at a close object the path from the eyes converge more quickly that if the target object is far away.

    Could be cool to pick your age every time you die and start a new character. So you could be someones grandfather, die, then comeback as their aspiring grandson. Could be really cool for character story telling

    How hard would it be to set the game up to allow players to upload pictures, and have the game automatically approximate them using the assets already in the engine? Kind of like the system police use to make composite sketches .

      FIFA 13 Had that, and it was pretty impresive to see your dumb ass face in the field along Messi and Co. ,It wasnt perfect tho, some angles simply looked crapy.

      Imagine - high res optimised polished models made in studio in milion dolar scanning system with dynamic RGB lights, next to your blury ugly face made by shity webcamera. That would be beautiful.

      Yeah, they talked about that. That's why I was asking about the game looking at the shapes on your blurry ugly face, and using the polished models it already has to put together a face that is as close to yours as possible.

    Yes, this is looking real good. Good to see some progress from the team. I like the more "themed" structure to the show as well. Did they discuss what "Tier" the character faces would be displayed at?

    you know what would be a good business opportunity? get the facial capture thing set up and charge the backers for getting their heads captures and then selling/gifting it to CIG.
    There is like a million backers and a high percentage of them is okay with spending good chunks of money... given the option of a shiny new ship or your face in the game I wonder how many would go for the latter...
    Guess it all depends on how much it'd cost to set up the equipment and finding out what your consumer base is and adjusting the price accordingly...

    I think it'd be neat to see a scanning booth? Set up at citizencon. Backers could line up to be scanned, no guarantees you will use them, but you could get a bunch of free character art material and backers would potentially pop up as NPCs and player character head presets.

      Character art materials aren't going to be an issue. Perhaps one day they could set up a service where you pay (probably quite a bit of money) to have your head scanned and converted into an in-game character model.

    More home runs. That character guy seems like a cool dude. Keep working your magic.
    Kismet tip: After the graphics & first time through wow factor wears off, people are most interested and in the look & style of their character. I find people stop looking at stats and whats the "best" vs what personifies their character. I have seen members spend 4-6 hours time & again just organizing how their character looks. Are you going to do separate sets like "4 the stats" & "Cosmetic gear/looks?" Aka a set your using for stats and a set your using to look how you want.

      There are no stats for characters in SC. It's skill based.

      There are, however, going to be stats for weapons, armour, and attatchments, which will be completely modular
