As an oldest brother myself there is a 23 year age gap between myself and the youngest brother. My life's purpose is to protect and provide. Henry acted his heart out as well as Sam. Just like in episode 3 I found myself crying but this one touched my deepest fears. Not being able to protect my brother is my biggest fear.
The bit about Sam asking if he still knows who he is after he gets infected is exactly how the Cordyceps fungus works IRL. Scientists previously believed the fungus controls the brain of ants, but the truth turned out to be that it controls all the muscles, but leaves the brain intact. So the ant is (possibly) aware that it has no control over it's own actions... which is even creepier than just being a mindless zombie. I've never played the games, so I don't know if this is explained in the games.
The second game does imply it tho. It might have just been a detail added by the sound team or it may be more than that idk, but you can hear runners (first stage of infected) crying sometimes, when you are sneaking around undetected.
I knew what was coming and I still wasn’t ready. I was crying as much as I was crying when I first met Henry and Sam in the video game. Also, really liked the small changes to the characters too. Oh! And the Bloater!! Effing fantastic!
I am grateful that Ellie comforted Sam and made him feel like he was getting medicine and he wouldn't turn. It probably made him not be as scared that night and of course she stayed up with him. She did him a solid on that. As a father of a 5 year old that scene is heart breaking.
I could FEEL Ellie hoping her blood would somehow actually help Sam while knowing it probably wouldn't. She was trying so hard to remain brave and positive for him. It broke my heart.
Something I noticed during this episode is that when the bloater rips off Perrys head i belive you can hear the sound you hear when you die in the game! Pretty neat!
Hey Ryan, love the channel. I wonder if maybe Ellie writing “Im sorry” also referred to how she promised to stay awake but ended up falling asleep. In a way that meant Sam was all alone when he turned which is what Ellie said she was most afraid of
That underground thing lifted from the game there are a series of notes Ish leaves and explains how the settlement is built and let’s the kids paint a castle on the outside it’s briefly shown in the episode when they look at the wall
@@gamecokben Evidence for that? There were no signs of infection down there. Just because Joel said what he said, doesn't mean that is factually what happened.
I wanted to point out that at the end it's like a role reversal between Ellie and Joel that she tells him "lets go"... building on her loss of innocence.
Kathleen visiting her childhood bedroom reminded me that Bill and Frank's bedroom was probably Bill's childhood room, with his collection of sports pennants on display.
Sam's & Henry's deaths were devastating. Although Kathleen had the chance to escape to safety, she chose hate & vengeance, which ultimately cost her her life.
This hit me so hard in the game I was left speechless when Sam and Henry die and then watching the show seeing it agian just broke me in pieces as for having a little brother who care deeply for and take care of as much as I can I couldn’t ever imagine having to go through it favorite episode so far
yeah, it was a nice detail, and it is also a sort of foreshadowing that her blood won't allow the Fireflies to use it to develop a cure, and that's why they're going to need to scoop up her brain to study it.
It was referenced in the video a bit, but it should be emphasized that Kathleen's rage and hatred killed everyone in KC. They lost their protectors in FEDRA (as bad as they were) when the rebels killed everyone. Instead of keeping the people safe, she continued in her quest for revenge and brought what was to be the new protectors, all of the armed rebels, with her to go after Henry, and they all got killed (or turned). Now if any people are left in the QZ in KC, they are fungus food because no one can protect them anymore.
The scene where Joel is powerless to help Ellie somehow hits way harder here than in the game, perhaps it's the way Ellie shrills. She knows she's immune but can be killed with one good strike and joel knows the same yet still he has to avoid being shot to save her. It really shows that despite his tough guy persona, he really has come to care for her instead of seeing her as cargo.
Best episode so far, especially if you're a hardcore fan of the game. I know a lot of people like the plot deviations for the trade-off of even further emotional story telling but some of us are also here for that action and we got served a great portion this episode. Thank You Neil Druckmann for not forgetting about us.
Another thing I noticed, when they all first entered the tunnel and Joel told Ellie to get her gun out and pulls it out of her jacket, he looks at her and rolls his eyes like "really?". Because he told her to put it in her backpack not pocket
This has been my favourite episode so far (with ep 3 being a close 2nd), absolutely devastating but so beautifully constructed. I’ll also say this has been the best breakdown video I’ve seen on it by far. The concept of the spaces being a way to protect the character from the terrors of reality is really intriguing. This actually reminded me of the novel ‘Room’, and its movie adaptation, which did a fantastic job of capturing the importance of a space as a sanctuary for the victims in the narrative and the way they dealt with their traumatic situation
The scary part ist that the newest research shows that it is exactly the way Cordyceps works in ants, it does not touch an ant's brain but connects to the mussels, so the ant is still an ant, aware that their body does things they do not want to. At least as aware as an ant can by.
Another Easter egg: when Henry watches the shootout between Joel and the guys, the reflection of the red shop sign is right across his eyes, like the superhero mask he paints on Sam later.
@SyZion Aurifex it adjusted the pacing of the overall story. A person could skip that episode, not miss anything integral to the storyline, and the pacing be more fluid.

SPOILERS The relationships we see in Episode 3 and 5 give us an opportunity to learn from some truly beautiful contrasts and comparisons. More importantly, they show us pieces of Ellie and Joel's relationship that reflect and refract how love changes us, how we feel emotions, and how we process grief. SPOILERS Bill protects Frank and Frank brings beauty into Bill's world through art and perspective and a true exploration of love. When it is clear Bill has to lose Frank, Bill decides that he cannot go on without Frank, but ends his life because his heart is incredibly full of love, feeling "satisfied" with life. This is about as close to an ideal scenario as TLOU world can give. Henry protects Sam and Sam brings beauty into the world through art and perspective as well - specifically, an innocent perspective adults often grow nostalgic for after loss and trauma. When Sam is lost, Henry decides he cannot go on but, unlike Bill, it is because of a broken heart, overcome with grief. The feelings Joel sees Henry go through at this time are exactly what Joel decides he cannot go through at the end of the first game. Joel knows his feelings for Ellie, and specifically the feelings resulting from losing Ellie, will kill him. He's watched it happen in Henry and he's not going to let it happen to him. Furthermore, the loss of Sarah made him lose his humanity. He knows that if he loses Ellie, there's nothing left for him, or of him, anymore. Then there's Kathleen. Michael protected Kathleen and Michael brought beauty into the world. Then someone else, someone broken hearted and grieving (in this case, grieving a potential loss), took Michael away from her. Kathleen's love and grief for Michael turned into a rage that fueled tunnel-vision vengeance until it burnt down everything around her and consumed her as well. This is the reflection of Ellie. Joel protects Ellie and his protection of her is something Ellie finds beautiful, fascinating. But someone else, grieving a loss, is going to take Joel away from her and that loss will fill Ellie with rage and an unquenchable need for vengeance that will very nearly consume her entirely. The greatest beauty in all of these relationships, including those involving Tommy and Tess, is we can see a little bit of ourselves in all of them. When you play a video game, you are literally imagining yourself into the world of the game and seeing yourself in the gameplay. This is what the show is doing so damn well - it is giving us broken pieces of a mirror, pieces we can pick up one by one (episode by episode) and see a bit of ourselves in. None of it is pretty and some of it hurts, but we're still being reflected regardless. Some shows and movies are incredibly enjoyable because they're so fantastical, they take us out of any existing world and let us just observe an amazing story. But adapting a video game into a show and still providing a way for us to access the world and see ourselves in it is brilliant, and is often where video game adaptations fail so miserably. Sure, Uncharted was kind of fun to watch (maybe?), but there was never any question that you, as the viewer, were on the outside. You were meant to observe and have fun doing it. But The Last of Us show, just like the video game, invites us in. It uses the characters and storylines to show us parts of ourselves and ask us if we're ok with what we see. It makes us wonder if we might want to swap the character we are in our own story. It asks, if everything were to end and all were stripped away, what pieces of ourselves would we want to remain? What pieces should be the last ones left within us? What do we want to be the last of us?
yea agree! also, it henry's HBO decision to betray his people for Sam is the same as *Joel's final choice in TLOU1* and kathleen's reaction is alot like Abby's
Epic comment. Thank you for sharing your insights. That seems like a really solid theory as to why this adaptation is working so well in the television medium.
This show has had me in tears more than any other show or movie I’ve ever watched. It’s not going to get any easier and I cannot express how greedy I feel for wanting more than just these next couple of episodes. The game was a masterpiece and this show has been a delicious side dish so far. The complete contrast between the game and show’s main characters are just the icing on the cake. Watching Ellie be herself, and seeing Joel come around to her is dope too. Especially them apologizing and talking to eachother, rather than being cold and heartless.
In the games you kill tons of runners, stalkers and clickers, and some bloaters. In the show that’s way less. That makes the infected so much more terrifying. In the game they feel like common enemies, just like the walkers in the Walking Dead. In this show they actually feel like such a huge threat that literally everyone is scared of, even the most experienced fighters. This show is so unique in every possible way
I think the moment when Sam is looking at the window is symbolic to the quote “when ur lost in the darkness, look for the light” but clickers and bloaters stay in dark places meaning their lost of hope and humanity.
That drawing of the protectors was taken directly out of the game. You find that exact drawing in the sewer sanctuary level and a ton of notes written by Ish, the founder of their sanctuary
While I prefer the game's adaptation of Sam & Henry, it was still crushing seeing Sam do kid-like things like aspiring to super heroes, playing with Ellie, laughing, and just having fun and enjoying life despite the circumstances. Sam's actor did an unbelievable job; so endearing and heart breaking :(
The drawing of the protectors in the sewer had a nice nod to the video games, one of them was named Ish, in the game he was the original occupant of the sewer and thru notes you learn he gradually got others with families down there with him

Wowowowow….. what’s with the new microphone? I liked the echo like you were in the room. 😂 in all seriousness it did throw me off haha love the breakdowns always! Your voice calms me down so much.
thought it was a nice little touch in the episode, when Henry first peeks out of the door and sees Joe - there’s a orange stripe reflected across his eyes that resemble the little orange mask he painted across Sam’s face earlier. Not sure if that was to show how heroic he was as a character.. or a dark foreshadowing of their deaths?
It is a bit of a hypocritical line from Kathleen too about Sam. Not just foreshadowing but also her goals only revolved around getting revenge for her brother and not focusing on bettering the lives of the people she "liberated".
Worst part of the real cordyceps is that it DOESN'T infect the brain until the very, very end: it spreads its tendrils out and hijacks the muscles and twitches the ant to where it wants to go. Could give a little more meaning to that scene where the Ellie cuts the forehead of the infected in the basement (and all the infected, for that matter)
In this episode my favorite change they made from the game was the cut to Ellie when Henry shoots himself. In the game you see Joel's reaction but here it's just way more effective seeing Ellie's (with Bella Ramsey surpassing expectations). Joel's seen stuff like this before, he's a hardened dude, so showing Ellie makes more sense, another chunk of her innocence lost and further set-up to becoming the main character of the overall story.
Personally I feel when joel said “built to fight the wrong enemy” he’s talking how they were all built for wars and overseas conflict. Because if they wouldn’t have enough time since the infection to build them only repurpose them. Especially since Tommy is a desert storm vet.
Thanks for the excellent breakdown, Ryan! One note...you said Tess gave Ellie a sandwich in episode 2, when I’m pretty sure it was your mom..🤪 if your mom was Marlene, who I think had packed that sandwich for Ellie..
Honestly really loved this episode. Really great analysis and explanations! Absolutely loved all of the connections you made, and hope you tied almost everything back to the box metaphor.
Tess didn't feed Ellie that sandwich. They were eating jerky while Ellie was eating the sandwich she got from the fireflies. The kid's drawing of "Our Protectors" in the tunnels is an artifact directly lifted from the first game.
What an episode! I loved the entire build-up to the swarm scene. Perry had a good run as well, the fact that he took just about 2 seconds to identify where Joel was sniping from and come up with a strategy to take him out. Only goes to show that even the finest fighters don't stand a chance against the real enemy! The ending broke me even though I knew what was coming, Sam's portrayal was painfully beautiful.

Just like in episode 3 I found myself crying but this one touched my deepest fears. Not being able to protect my brother is my biggest fear.
23 years? Your brother may be an accident 😂
@@vibesnovibes6320 no, you are the accident 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
@@vibesnovibes6320 Yikes, dude. What compelled you to say this?
The bit about Sam asking if he still knows who he is after he gets infected is exactly how the Cordyceps fungus works IRL. Scientists previously believed the fungus controls the brain of ants, but the truth turned out to be that it controls all the muscles, but leaves the brain intact. So the ant is (possibly) aware that it has no control over it's own actions... which is even creepier than just being a mindless zombie.
I've never played the games, so I don't know if this is explained in the games.
The first game was made before that scientific discovery was published, so it doesn't address it
The second game does imply it tho. It might have just been a detail added by the sound team or it may be more than that idk, but you can hear runners (first stage of infected) crying sometimes, when you are sneaking around undetected.
@@loirigudo In the first game it works like that too for some reason.
The way the newly infected behave and sound before they go full mushroom head could make me believe that
I loved the added scene of Ellie trying to save Sam
It underscores that she doesn't really understand what is going to happen when she gets to the Fireflys.
Tess didn’t gave a Sandwich to Ellie it was Marlene. Ellie brought it in her backpack.
Came here to say this.
I still want to know where the heck they got that bread from.
@@theocjr.43 raiders
Came here to say that too!
We know Ryan has to make at least 1 mistake per breakdown lol
I knew what was coming and I still wasn’t ready. I was crying as much as I was crying when I first met Henry and Sam in the video game. Also, really liked the small changes to the characters too. Oh! And the Bloater!! Effing fantastic!
Until the last second I was so hopeful that their story would turn out differently here.
Every single change they've made so far has truly served the story BEAUTIFULLY!
Hey Ryan, love the channel. I wonder if maybe Ellie writing “Im sorry” also referred to how she promised to stay awake but ended up falling asleep. In a way that meant Sam was all alone when he turned which is what Ellie said she was most afraid of
One of the greatest episodes of TV I've ever seen. Tears were flowing.
Its so easy to sometimes exagerate, but this was truly on another level
The fact I knew what was gonna happen but I was still gut punched
Ellie reaction to Henry’s suicide was the scene that broke me, estelar show
Lol you absolutely don’t watch much TV. This was pretty good at best.
@@DethFromAbv give some examples then
That underground thing lifted from the game there are a series of notes Ish leaves and explains how the settlement is built and let’s the kids paint a castle on the outside it’s briefly shown in the episode when they look at the wall
When Henry mentions that FEDRA "Cleared out the tunnels"....maybe it wasn't infected, but those families living down there.
No, those families became infected
@@gamecokben Evidence for that? There were no signs of infection down there. Just because Joel said what he said, doesn't mean that is factually what happened.
@@Zenn3k that's because often what Joel said happened
@@Zenn3k In the games, the infected eventually got in
@@Zenn3kGame talks about it. Someone left a door open and infected got to the guards and kids :/
That Kathleen monologue in her childhood room DRAGGGGGED ON for so long. Shesssh
Yeah I was just waiting for her to bite it. Such a shitty character, portrayed by a shitty actor.
Good riddance Rose
Agreed. If it was meant to create sympathy for her character, it missed the mark. It felt odd & forced. 🤷♀️
I am just noticing now that katheleen is also a direct reflection of the path ellie will walk on in the future.
Spoilers bro. Not everyone has played the games
You’re very well spoken and I love how you make connections from a wideeee variety of examples. Makes me want to enjoy English class analysis unit.😂
Bros an absolute legend. Not even 2 hrs after episode premiere and this vid is up 🔥🔥
Sam's & Henry's deaths were devastating. Although Kathleen had the chance to escape to safety, she chose hate & vengeance, which ultimately cost her her life.
10 years later I knew this was coming. And yet I was still not ready
This hit me so hard in the game I was left speechless when Sam and Henry die and then watching the show seeing it agian just broke me in pieces as for having a little brother who care deeply for and take care of as much as I can I couldn’t ever imagine having to go through it favorite episode so far
Tess didnt give Ellie no damn sandwich 😂 I’m sure you meant Marlene. 😅
I’m in awe TV has become something I never felt possible 20 years ago
I thought it was very sweet of Ellie to try ,and mix her blood with Sam wound. I figured it wasn't going to work, but was still nice.
yeah, it was a nice detail, and it is also a sort of foreshadowing that her blood won't allow the Fireflies to use it to develop a cure, and that's why they're going to need to scoop up her brain to study it.
I kept expecting Joel to shooting at Kathleen when she was talking before the sinkhole collapsed.
Gah! This show is so great. So much beauty and pain packed into one episode.
I liked the way Ellie started walking off at the end before Joel..she's becoming hardened to the world
Ellie's reaction when Henry shot himself broke me.😢
Best episode so far, especially if you're a hardcore fan of the game.
Haven't noticed that, good eye
Man what an amazing episode. I knew what was gonna happen but it didn't make it any easier. Joels scene with the sniper was great as well.
Another Easter egg: when Henry watches the shootout between Joel and the guys, the reflection of the red shop sign is right across his eyes, like the superhero mask he paints on Sam later.
This!
What an insane episode!!!!! This show keeps getting better and better
Minus that Romeo and Julio episode
@@syzionaurifex5383 😑
@SyZion Aurifex it adjusted the pacing of the overall story. A person could skip that episode, not miss anything integral to the storyline, and the pacing be more fluid.

SPOILERS
The relationships we see in Episode 3 and 5 give us an opportunity to learn from some truly beautiful contrasts and comparisons. More importantly, they show us pieces of Ellie and Joel's relationship that reflect and refract how love changes us, how we feel emotions, and how we process grief.
SPOILERS
Bill protects Frank and Frank brings beauty into Bill's world through art and perspective and a true exploration of love.
What do we want to be the last of us?
yea agree! also, it henry's HBO decision to betray his people for Sam is the same as *Joel's final choice in TLOU1*
and kathleen's reaction is alot like Abby's
13:20 Tess did NOT give Ellie that sandwich. In fact she was surprised and kind of envious that it was a chicken sandwich.
This show is so unique in every possible way
Dang Ryan such great analysis! Love how you weave in the trauma emotions and how that functions everyone. Love this.
I think the moment when Sam is looking at the window is symbolic to the quote “when ur lost in the darkness, look for the light” but clickers and bloaters stay in dark places meaning their lost of hope and humanity.
I thought it was funny that Tommy from the game is the one who’s killed by the bloater
That drawing of the protectors was taken directly out of the game. You find that exact drawing in the sewer sanctuary level and a ton of notes written by Ish, the founder of their sanctuary
Tess didn't give Ellie a sandwich, it was Marleen (Fireflies).
You overthinking the rat part , a rat is a snitch and since they collaborated they snitches aka rats
the parallels between Kathleen and henry and ellie and abby are really cool
While I prefer the game's adaptation of Sam & Henry, it was still crushing seeing Sam do kid-like things like aspiring to super heroes, playing with Ellie, laughing, and just having fun and enjoying life despite the circumstances. Sam's actor did an unbelievable job; so endearing and heart breaking :(
The drawing of the protectors in the sewer had a nice nod to the video games, one of them was named Ish, in the game he was the original occupant of the sewer and thru notes you learn he gradually got others with families down there with him
What did you think of the episode?
not available for me yet :( I have been waiting for your outlook on episode 4 but cant seem to find it! love the details and themes you point out to your viewers cant wait to watch this after ive seen episode 5

Best episode so far props to keivon Montreal, and Lamar for making henry ,and sam story more heartbreaking than game is😭💔.
I’d never played the game so when the boy turned & got shot, I was legitimately stunned! I thought maybe Ellie’s blood would work.
I can't watch this because I only have Disney+ at the moment so your videos are helping me fill the void. Keep it up Ryan and Doug! Also, Squatch is amazing!
You want a link to watch it for free?

Such a dislikeable human Kathleen
Great great episode!!! I just finished and checked RUclips to see if this had dropped yet. You never let us down Ryan!!!
I was kicking my feet like a little girl from when the sniper started shooting to when Kathleen met the infected, this episode was PHENOMENAL
The infected scene was like The Battle of the Bastards on shrooms, literally
This show has gotten better every week
I loved how the orange reflection on the window makes a mask on Henry's face when he's watching the shoot out between Joel and Bryan
The drawing of the protectors is taken directly from the game, where you can also read their stories thru notes scattered around the bunker
The ending was heart breaking. Episode 5 is 9/10 for sure.
I caught that too - came here to comment then LOL'd when I read your "your mom"! 😂😂😂 Nice callback. 👏
This show is just getting better. Thanks for the breakdown.
I just feel like this episode was so well done. You fall in love with Henry and Sam pretty much immediately, and their bond in the show was so amazing
Epic performance from Henry. Epic , couldn't hold a tear.
Dude, this show has made me cry far too many times! And I love it.
Honestly really loved this episode. Really great analysis and explanations! Absolutely loved all of the connections you made, and hope you tied almost everything back to the box metaphor.
Nice to see that Ellie learned how to run away in a straight line, just like her liege lord, Rickon Stark.
I would like to suggest the term 'Funghies' on behalf of the Zombie Union.
The Funghies are not undead and do not groan.
Tess didn't feed Ellie that sandwich. They were eating jerky while Ellie was eating the sandwich she got from the fireflies. The kid's drawing of "Our Protectors" in the tunnels is an artifact directly lifted from the first game.
Something AMAZING for the Dr. Squatch soap is the Duke Cannons Soap on a Rope, turns your bar into a loofah, or whatever
Each episode just keeps getting better and better really awesome!!
Ellie acting near the end is just perfect
What an episode! I loved the entire build-up to the swarm scene. Perry had a good run as well, the fact that he took just about 2 seconds to identify where Joel was sniping from and come up with a strategy to take him out. Only goes to show that even the finest fighters don't stand a chance against the real enemy! The ending broke me even though I knew what was coming, Sam's portrayal was painfully beautiful.
20:30 was hoping Joel would snipe Kathleen at that moment instead of infected rising up
It was much more fitting for her to be destroyed by the threat that she was compelled to ignore by her selfishness
I love how so many people haven't played the game. Ya'll are in for a treat. Great review per usual 👏
‘Ish’ is one of the guards in the kids picture. In the game ish is a guy who lives underground and decides to help others
