Carlisle the Cinephile You're not the only one who thought the Giant was hand drawn. I've been with with this movie since the beginning, when i was a 2 year old kid and this movie was obscure as all hell, and as a result this is not only one of my more nostalgic movies, but also my favorite movie of all time.
Treasure Planet suffered in the same way, sadly. Two amazing movies that flopped upon their initial release, but got more popular as the years went on.
This was one of the movies I watched when I was hospitalized last year. I loved the movie already, but watching it in the hospital made me love it even more. It is also one of my favorite movies. :)
I think one of the reasons it flopped was because at the same time Disney released Tarzan. I remember because when I was little me and my dad wanted to see Tarzan but it sold out so we settled for Iron Giant and ever since we both have been huge Brad Bird fans. My dad's favorite Pixar is The Incredibles.
I remember watching this over and over as a little kid, loving it, and wondering why nobody else had even heard of it. Some people even claimed they thought it looked stupid. Well jokes on them, it turned out to be one of the best animated films ever!
The Iron Giant is a true classic, and one of the most underrated animated films ever made along with The Secret of NIMH and Teacher's Pet. Also, good luck on Belle's Magical World, you're gonna need it...
Mairead Malesco So wait, it's being re-released, and next month? I heard Mat speak on a re-release, but I thought he said it happened already, i.e. "it's been re-released in theaters."
And the Iron Giant himself will be a central character in Steven Spielberg's upcoming film "Ready Player One" And I just realized that this was released in the time when I could support you on Patreon. Glad I could help support this video and I hope to be able to support you again soon.
I wish more movies like this were cel animation is the main form of animation but there is a little bit of cgi in it.Man this movie made me miss the cell animation of my early childhood
Well, to be fair, Secret of NIMH has the same kind of critical reception and that bombed big-time as well. Keep in mind this was long before it was common for studios other than Disney to succeed at the box office.
It had very few tie ins, and when Brad Bird showed WB the glowing reviews of TIG, they were mortified. As Bird said, they had years to market it, but WB simply didn't. They had a fast food tie in, but it either wasn't finalized, or they pulled out. I read it on the wiki page.
In March 1999, only one month before The Iron Giant received test screenings as well as five months before the film was released into theaters, Warner Brothers released Richard Rich's second non-Disney animated film called The King and I. To say that The King and I erased the little confidence Warner Brothers had left in The Iron Giant would be an understatement.
You will be very happy to hear that The Iron Giant is #4 on my Top 10 Favorite Non-Disney Animated Movies. First of all, I really like the friendship between Hogarth and the Title Robot. This is mostly because Hogarth is voiced by real child actor Eli Marienthal, but that makes me all the more touched when Hogarth tries to make the robot a good guy, and all the more concerned when the robot's secret is threatened by Kent Mansley. Secondly, I did say multiple times that hand-drawn animation is my favorite animation type (another reason why I like this movie), but I will say I appreciate computer animation when it is such a side dish to drawing animation. I know drawing is still the dominant style in this movie, so I can accept he title robot being CGI. In fact, I actually am impressed at how well the 2D and 3D animation blend together. I actually wish The Iron Giant stayed underrated, but that only gives me more reason to like this movie. I agree with you that The Iron Giant is a masterpiece one must simply see for oneself. P.S. I can't help seeing multiple similarities between The Iron Giant and The Rescuers Down Under. If you want, I can post a future comment listing all the similarities these two movies have with each other.
Robin art•15• Hand drawn...on a computer. You really don't understand how it works at all do you? It's called a "tablet computer". Sure, maybe some concept art and storyboarding is done with physical media, but the final product is done entirely with computers. The first tablet computer directed towards consumers. This was the same year The Little Mermaid was released. The Little Mermaid was also the last Disney feature film to use the traditional hand-painted cel method of animation. Disney's next film, The Rescuers Down Under, used a digital method of coloring and combining scanned drawings developed for Disney by Pixar called CAPS (Computer Animation Production System), which would eliminate the need for cels, the multiplane camera, and many of the optical effects used for the last time in Mermaid. Source: Audio Commentary by John Musker, Ron Clements, and Alan Menken Bonus material from The Little Mermaid: Platinum Edition [DVD]. Walt Disney Home Entertainment.
Also digital ink and paint has been in use at Walt Disney Feature Animation since 1989, where it was used for the final rainbow shot in The Little Mermaid
No matter every time I see a picture art or clip of the Iron Giant, I just want to cry... Not tears of sadness but tears when you just see something so beautiful that you can't help it but cry. It was that profound in my childhood.
Robin art•15• He was actually animated in CG wireframe animation. Also, the way the film blends hand-drawn animation with computer animation was really impressive.

Yes, by FRANK THOMAS and OLLIE JOHNSTON, I do mean two member of the NINE OLD MEN!
A theater near me was doing a summer movie bargain thing and I already saw the movie but this year when it came to the theater I begged my mom to go see it. I did go see it and it is so cool to see and old film like this up on screen
I remember watching this in preschool. There was this one time me and my sister pulled the mattress off the top bunk of our bunk beds, put it on the floor, and jumped from the top bunk onto the mattress yelling, "BONZAI!!!!", and we would recreate that scene forever! So fun, I need to go get it on DVD.
The reason why people still view this movie as underrated is because it wasn't made by a big animation studio such as Disney or Dreamworks. It's also suffering from the modern day issue of hand-drawn animation. The thing is, this film is was not only failing from bad marketing, but also the unpopularity of its art style. You see, The Iron Giant was released when the Renaissance Era of Animation was ending, and CGI was slowly rising in popularity with the release of Toy Story 2. My uncle believes that hand-drawn and CGI can work together as a combination, and I think so too. But, it's really sad that this film has pretty much gained recognition as a classic, yet no one will seem to notice it.
Thanks for your review. The Iron Giant should never have been a flop in the first place. Period. That WAS totally wicked. Bird became an easy favourite when I found that several movies that stood out for me for properly yet indirectly teaching a message, had him in common.
Little Mermaid 2 I take it....if not a Cinderella sequel but I'm pretty certain it's the Little Mermaid sequel that is a musical. Though it could also be the Beauty and the Beast 'sequel' maybe.
This is my absolut favorite film ever. I grew up and built a relationship with my father with this film. I even have a tatto done with a Iron Giant motive!
He's actually reviewing this movie! YES! Now all I need him to do is review Disney's Hercules, Disney's Pocahontas, Space Chimps, Rainbow Rocks, The Simpson's Movie, Spongebob Squarepants Movie, and then my life will be complete.
Kinda like "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox," I thought "The Iron Giant" was pretty damn good on my first viewing. On my second, I truly saw how amazing it is. I think this may become a favourite for me over time, just like the former films I mentioned. 9/10 (subject to change).
Oh man. Belles Magical World. When I was little, I saw this before Beauty and the Beast and I loved the one with the bitchy feather duster. But now, looking back on it. Everything in it is terrible XD
the iron giant should of been a box office hit as Robert Ebert gave the movie a great review saying that it's a much watch film that shouldn't be forgotten.
The iron giant is one of my favorite non Disney animated feature like the secret of NiMH and the Lego movie, as the reason why it's so good because it focuses on good story and characters and great animation to on the cherry on a already tasty cake.
It was so awesome, Rebeltaxi himself cited this as a definitive Superman story. Here is what he said in his second disturbing cartoons list: "They say you can't write a good Superman story. You know who said that? A quitter. Did you see the Iron Giant?" LoL
Was the scene in GotG where groot plucked a sprout from the side of his head a reference to the scene in TIG where the giant puts the screw back in his jaw?
wow, 3 films this year with a 10/10 score. so unheard of for your channel, and I know that two were classic reviews, but still, what are the odds? I was one of the lucky people to see Iron Giant in theaters and I loved it, though I have no idea why we never got the movie on vhs when it came out (scratches head)
the interesting thing is we never learn why the giant was sent to earth, it could have been to destroy it or maybe he was just sent to investigate it and the weapons were built into him for defence
Another character of note is the general - while not as prominent, he's a great contrast to Kent Mansley as he's more skeptical and yet, when things come out he's actually willing to listen rather than charging in without context; at worst he initially suspects the worst, but quickly realises the truth while Mansley does not. Not a MAJOR character, but a good symbol for the positive themes of the film - that overall people can CHOOSE to be what they want, just like the Giant (and unlike Mansley, who lets his ambition control him and dictate his choices). Overall this film truly is a masterpiece; the one way it might be underrated, really, is that it CANNOT get enough hype no matter what. Forget your average Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks/Miyazaki, this one stands above most and with the best there is out there.
I heard The Iron Giant was supposed to be a Pixar film (animated in 3D), but Warner Bros. hired Brad Bird first. He was then going to make The Incredibles for Warner Bros. (animated in 2D) but Pixar hired him, and there you go.
Not just one of my favorite animated movies but One of my favorite movies in general. Not only is there a nostalgia factor (I had it on video as a kid and watched it quite a bit) but its a genuinely well made movie. Amazing animation, unique yet familiar story, well crafted setting, fantastically implemented themes and ideas, and realistic relatable characters. Its action packed yet also incredibly emotional and heartfelt and overall there's a reason its considered one of the best animated movies of all time.
Saw it as a little kid; liked it okay. Rewatched it in theatres; Now my new favorite movie of all time. (Fun fact, we were about to see Hotel Transylvania 2, but switched when we realized that it was The Iron Giant's last showing.
9:30- This is something hardcore Luigi fans need to realize too. With so many people calling him an underrated character, I think it's safe to say he's not underrated anymore and hasn't been for a few years. Just thought I'd point that out.
Are you going to do a review on Romeo and Juliet: Sealed with a Kiss by Phil Nibbelink? I know this is a one man movie but at least give it an Animatt Seal of Garbage.
The greatest Superman movie of all time
Agreed.
That and I also think it's a great king kong movie too.(I can explain)
Even though it’s not a Superman movie

Carlisle the Cinephile I know right, I never noticed.
lol, it's super noticable XD I saw it when I was 3
Treasure Planet suffered in the same way, sadly. Two amazing movies that flopped upon their initial release, but got more popular as the years went on.

WHAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Iron Giant was re-release in Theaters and I didn't even know about!!!!
Why did this movie failed in the box office yet it had 97% rating on rotten tomatoes?
You can thank piss poor marketing by Warner Bros for that.
Well, to be fair, Secret of NIMH has the same kind of critical reception and that bombed big-time as well. Keep in mind this was long before it was common for studios other than Disney to succeed at the box office.
shit marketing
+Enzo Sciascetti what did things gone wrong in warner bros's crappy marketing of the iron giant?
It had very few tie ins, and when Brad Bird showed WB the glowing reviews of TIG, they were mortified. As Bird said, they had years to market it, but WB simply didn't. They had a fast food tie in, but it either wasn't finalized, or they pulled out. I read it on the wiki page.

***** Yes. It's done on a computer. Digital ink is literally generating computer imagery.
+mattwo7 It's not ALL computer. it's still hand drawn for a big part, the rough drafts for example.

Belle's Magical World ISN'T A Sequel or a movie in general. its more like a film that includes 3 stories that take place BETWEEN Beauty & The Beast
The term would be "midquel" as the movie takes place during the events of the original. :)

Is the frowny face because the movie was so awful?
