Well done Dave. Built a steam box & it works a treat. No airborne particles or chemicals! Added benefit; pre raises grain for a light sand & smooth prime coat. Thanks!
Thanks Tom. The sash will get to about 200 degrees however, harder putties will require more time in the box to soften. You have about 15 minutes once out of the steamer regardless of time in box. After that putty will harden to the point you want to put back in steam box. Another 20 minutes or so will usually do it.
Hey Dave, This is a great way to clean the glaze, and get lots of the paint. I've built my box 48" x 48" x 15" from 2" thick closed cell poly foam, and use a propane fish cooker with a canning pressure cooker. I already had this for steam bending wood, so not hard to get up and running. I've used a heat gun to get the backside styles and rails, but wondering what you've found works best for the mullion molding details. I'm sure you have some tricks that can save me some time. Made this steamer myself for about $30.00 and some scrap wood. Bought a wall paper steamer off of craiglsist for $ 10.00. Took me aabout 4 hours. It works great. The most expense part was the insulation board from Lowes for $15.00. Probably could have just looked for a commercial roofer and got his scraps but anyway this works great. No need to buy the $250 steamer when a wall paper steamer will do.
I am restoring old windows made of heart pine with many coats of paint - It seems that the glazing will soften in 45 minutes, but the paint is very hard. Is there a limit to the amount of time it can be in the steam?
Great video--thanks for sharing! I am working on a restoration project that has turned ugly! The cabinet in my kitchen is at least 50 years old. (The building itself was constructed in 1924, but I suspect that this cabinet was added to the kitchen after (try to imagine a china cabinet installed within the wall...) Over the years there have been (at least) 10 layers of paint and I am trying to remove all of them to the wood with the intention of staining the wood. More to come....
What did you use to generate the steam. I want to make a box just to do my windows. The house is 80 yrs. old and needs paint removel and reglazing. any suggestions on where to find a small steam generator.

impressed out of all the vids i have seen I like this, But mate glazing componds dont have lead mixed in it.... paint does.
Will that Glazing get hard if you allow the window frame to cool
It will garden as it cools down but you can return it to the steamer.
