I agree in principal but here is the deal: no one I know does architecture for money, we do it for love. The chance to break out and into the world of "starchitect" with a competition is part of the lure (think Maya Lin or Antoine Predock) but really, at it's core, the love of actualizing your own ideas is the reason the architect does what he does. If you are in this profession for money you will be perpetually unhappy and I do not envy you. Do it for love my friend or do not do it at all: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Happy Day!

I didn't know about architectural competitions until now. If a competition is by invitation, then I think the organizers should pay something to each invitee, win or lose. If it's an open competition, then they don't owe you anything.
I get you, you make valid points but hear me out for a sec.
I'm currently working in a fairly recognised office with a good reputation and they're landing important projects in the gulf. Sad reality is that i spend most of the time doing detail development and when i get to work on a concept design project, it's a boring commercial Pinterest hospitality design. Architectural competitions are a chance for me to express my ideas and knowledge into a project, which i never get to at work. It's my only chance to someday get recognised. I don't have any connections and don't get paid enough to start my office. I can only prove myself to the world via a competition which i did recently and got the second prize. I agree with the last point you made, but for me making the profession miserable for established offices who made it there in the business through capital or connections (as you said), doesn't bother me at all tbh

I think the problem runs even deeper. Many "solutions" found through competitions, especially for housing projects, lack all imagination. They are bascially clones of clones of clones of other competitions.
As you state, IF there were a real measurable target to aspire too, you would enter the competition.
This could be made possible for almost any project... IF the people responsible for the competition had the expertise to define a concept and strigent parameters one could create a list of truly objective targets to be met.
Most of the time, they do lack all expertise, they just handle the money.
I am not an architect, but an industrial designer, and totally relate to this! I think it relates to most of the designing industry, but at a different scale.
Nice drop at the end! I've been watching your videos a lot lately and really appreciate what you're saying. It's a sisyphus task for us architects to establish ourselves and 99% will never roll the rock above the hill. I wouldn't play lottery neither, so why would I participate in an architectural competition.

I'm a new graduated architect, I do BIM in live connection with parametric design, also I make VR presentations for the clients, but I get a very low salary and that's very sad... 😔

I can see why it is detrimental to the industry but as a student I think it’s phenomenal for growth and solidity to a portfolio
you're probably talking about ideas competitions, those aren't to be built. they're just exercises with a monetary prize.
You are correct that competitions do exploit architects. However, how can we level the playing field? We are already disadvantaged against the large offices anyways, whether there are competitions or not. We actually won a competition against much larger offices - yes, the project was too small for them, so they were not too interested, and did not quite put their best architects on their team. Yes, we did get the project built, and yes, we did get connections which were good connections if we didn't have the competition, would not have gotten. And yes, we did get paid for the project, and it was not bad.
And I love you for that...
Thank you for putting things in perspective, i have been failing to think and conclude the truth out of this mindless competitions. Design is not free brother, one has to pay for it, and it isn’t cheap either 😂
I have been thinking about that lately, and It's absolutely ridiculous, our lives is shorter than doing this!
It's sad but true, the only beneficients of the competitions are the organizers.... It is about not only architecture, but photography, art and design at all.

I think competitions are a marvellous way to develop architecture and architects.
The problem is that they are few.
If you have a lot much more competitions, with changing judges, and in an anonymous way, you will have a lot of winners to distribute in a lot of projects...
It's still a massive problem of having people work for weeks, or even months on a project without getting paid, unless they win. Sure, the chance of winning would be higher if there were more competitions with fewer participants, but that doesn't change the root problem. The only solution I see is for the number of participants to be limited and for all participants to be paid a fair stipend which covers the expected time and effort spent, and then the winner get's to build their building, and a winner's bonus on top (so there is still a financial incentive to win). But then competitions would be ruinously expensive, you might say. To which I would answer that competitions are already ruinously expensive to architects. Simply pay people for their work. If you, as an individual, business, or government, want to have the luxury of choosing between multiple proposals by multiple architects, then you should be prepared to compensate those architects for developing and presenting those proposals.

Come on, man... As a student how do you get noticed? I mean I know is a lottery, but trust me, there's is no higher rate of learning things than in a competition. And the competition is not about money or contract. Is about deadline I think. It makes you finish the idea in time.
You got it, man. I've been through a lot of competitions. And, I guarantee it's about personality growth and critical thinking.

As for students, well.. I suppose it’s quite alright, since students are not yet professional architects, so entering student competitions doesn’t really tarnish the image of the profession,
and that entering competition is a way to hone design skills and to build graduate portfolio
Can’t deny that whether pro or student competitions still kinda has the same faults mentioned on the vid, so it’s up to the individuals to decide for themselves whether they’ll gain more benefit from joining, or not
