What we can expect is a 3 chapter story in how you lost your ever lovin mind!! While I see your thought process on this, I would say you traded your soul for transhumanism. Hahaha I'm kidding. (Kind of 😉 ) I love the new direction of the channel but this is just crazy talk. Shiny, mechanical, metal objects is where I draw the line

    1) I'm waiting for part 2
    2) Don't let these nitwits shame you for making your choice.
    3) I've seen at least 4-8 murders that were identified as such because someone was wearing a health type watch. 😮
    4) I held off on the cell phone revolution for >10 years, and then I joined when it could benefit my life, and the past 6 years play high-quality smartphone has contributed meaningfully to my quality of life, since I live abroad in places where I am not fluent.

You are one of the reasons I got into mechanical watches! You aren’t wearing a watch, it’s a wrist computer. So sad. There is still hope for you.
That said, where I work I can’t wear a smart watch or anything that is “connected”. Mechanical or quartz is my go-to on a daily basis.

      Congrats on regressing!

I switched to an Apple Watch back in Sept of 2022. I had been mechanical-only for the previous ten years though I would wear my g-shock (GWM5610) occasionally. The prize of my collection is a Rolex Explorer II (ref: 16570) that I got a great deal on pre-owned (one owner, very minty, rarely worn, never worn on the bracelet) but I did have a few others, mostly seikos and two vostoks (I was there in the 80s, I remember the USSR, so a soviet watch is appealing). Just such a cool hobby rotating around watches based on mood and the day's needs.
Until I got the Apple Watch. It's just so useful having the ability to see notifications, silence my phone, check the weather, etc. I've sold off a lot of my watches and now just have the Rolex, g-shock, and 1 vostok....and these guys never get worn. They just live in a case.

Two years ago at fifty I did something similar. I realized that I mostly wore my G-Shocks and Casio mostly digital resin watches. So comfortable and precise, not to mention hassle and maintenance free. So I sold all but three (that I never wear, should and will likely sell too) of the so-called real watches, bought six or so new Gs and Casios, keeping those I already had. I now rotate through my plastic-fantastics as I wish. Much happier now, off the watch merry go-round after 40 yrs in the hobby.

I've just recently went the opposite direction. I've been wearing a Fitbit watch (went through 2 of them) for the past 4 years and just a couple of days ago went back to a Casio A168 and in the process of installing a new battery/o-ring on my DW-5600 G-Shock that went dead. The Fitbit was fun at first with all the tracking this and that but after a while, I just wore it as a watch to tell time and the date. It broke a couple of days ago and thought it wouldn't be wise to purchase another. I've spent enough time looking online to try and fix it but I'm going to let it go. I have a watch collection including my favorite Rolex Explorer. I'm returning to my Casios for everyday use.

Mechanical watches are no good from a practical, functional standpoint. In fact they’re basically junk. These days they’re only good as style/status accessories, the only niche traditional, analog, mechanical watches can fill at this point in time. This is why all the high end brands have abandoned making watches as practical tools in favor of strictly dressy, status icons (cough Rolex cough). Unless you just like the way it looks or you’re looking to flex, mechanical watches are a complete waste of money.

One day soon enough that Garmin will run out of battery, the technology will be replaced by something else. The app will be discontinued. And that plastic toy will fade and disintegrate into dust.

Great video and great topic to bring up. My two cents are this, you make the call on what you are going to wear and as long as you're ok with it, then good to go! I wear a Garmin Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar on the right wrist and rotate watches on my left. I don't really care if someone notices or asks me why I'm wearing two watches (I usually reply with a smartass answer like, I've got two shoes on, why not two watches?) I wear the Garmin for the same reasons you do, I bike, walk, row, walk and swim on a weekly basis, and I love watches; I own mechanical, automatic and quartz; everything from a Stowa down to a G-Shock (hell, I own 3 Seiko Turtles). I would say that the argument that you make for the maintenance on your mechanical watches could be applied to the Garmin's as well, eventually you'll have to upgrade that Garmin like I did with mine.
So, I suppose the discussion could come down to what to you want to spend your money on? Upkeep of your mechanical / automatic watches or upgrading smart watches....only the individual can answer that.
And I'll add, the only people that notice I'm wearing two watches are watch people...hardly anyone notices. They're too busy with their smart devices to notice.
    Again, great video.

The repair cost is the reason why collecting mechanical watches with intent to use all of them, is only for those who don't know what to do with their money. In my opinion, the whole point of mechanical watches is to have ONE. You can keep it forever, and you can pass it down when the time comes. Only in this case does the service cost make sense. I bought the white dial Omega Seamaster brand new in 2021 when our third daughter was born, engraved all three names on the back, and it's the only watch I own, except for my Fenix 6x, which I use exclusively when training.

Whatever makes you happy. Life is short. I fell down the Aliexpress watch rabbit hole. Couldn’t be happier than chasing higher end watches that I won’t or don’t always wear. (Status vs value) Social media seems to be at the height of guys making hilariously snarky or the worst comments they can in response to someone’s video or opinion. Usually they don’t take the time to make a video or post anything worthwhile. …yet you see the same personalities ripping into anyone who sounds off first. So a stranger tries to shit on another stranger’s opinion as harshly as they can. I hope it somehow lifts their ego to level 11. We all have our days for sure. Going around shitting on everyone because you don’t agree with them is another.

Eh, smart/digital watches aren't my thing but if you like them go for it. Ignore morons talking sh!t and buy the things you like and do the things you like. The person that commented about "not being the type of person to drive that car" is a total muppet.
I've really wanted a Hamilton khaki field watch, just like you have, but bringing it in every few years for servicing at several hundred a pop makes me reconsider. That's fine if others don't mind that but I'm not a hardcore watch guy. I have a $100 Citizen Eco-Drive field type watch that runs like a top since I bought it 8 years ago. Actually I just looked it up and it's almost twice as much now as I paid for it then lol. Wow.
So do automatic watches have less servicing needed? I've always been leary about them cause I doubt I'll move around enough to charge them. I guess I could just get one of those auto watch charger things that shake them.

    • @555Gear
      @555Gear  7 месяцев назад +1

It definitely depends on the movement itself. As far as how often it needs to be serviced. I've been thoroughly impressed with my Seiko movements for being workhorses. I do love my khaki though, so don't be afraid to try one out! Thanks for watching

I completely understand where you’re coming from. I haven’t gone full Garmin or Apple Watch mode, but I do get frustrated at times with having to set the time/day/date on some of my automatics. My Sinn only has 38 hours of PR, and ain’t nobody got time for that! I WISH more watch brands would utilize something like La Joux-Perret’s G100 movement, or come up with something similar w/70ish hours power reserve. So… I’ve sort of defaulted to my quartz watches. My Scurfa Diver 1 Ti, or my Casio Protrek Ani-digi. Ultimately I choose my daily watch based on convenience, and since I like analog, with day/date feature (and stop watch as a cool extra useful feature) I love the Protrek. The solar power and atomic signal timekeeping is icing on the cake. Nice Garmin, btw.
