We visit the sites of the Jim Clark memorial and the Jim Clark Chicane, the Ostkurve and the remaining straight to the Senna Chicane.
Footage of a track walk and onboard footage of the remained straight from the Ostkurve to the Ayrton Senna Chicane.

So sad to see that glorious circuit rotting in the woods
You should see the state that Brooklands is in now
It's now a nature reserve, it was a dangerous relic, not considered a great circuit by a lot of people, but it was fast I know that
@@nathanscott3242 That looks like this: ruclips.net/video/4tiHJE3HtlA/видео.html
@@tommykarate6226 Actually it was not so popular by most drivers. The only thing they liked was the contrast between the wood section and the stadium. However, it was a good alternation on the calendar. And it's a shame what they did with the old track.
The old circuit was garbage, the new circuit is a miracle! And until F1 decided not to change the layouts of the circuits as it's the safest for drivers, that circuit shall be considered *_THE ULTIMATE FORM OF MOTORSPORTS PERFECTION!_*
I miss the old circuit so much...
I'm right there with you bro and i feel your pain.
Me too 😭
same here :D
Mother nature don't even grow trees there because she knows it was a crime
Man, I want to comment similarly, but yours deserve thumbs-up!
This really is so sad, I can’t believe how watching this makes me feel and to see how much has changed in 17/18 years? The full throttle, peak revs blasts through the forest have gone! You couldn’t even drive the old circuit for nostalgia. So many great memories lost and the state of the old circuit makes it look like it was a thousand years ago! Crazy.

Sweet
I love this version of Hockenheim so much, that if I ever win a billion pounds, I would set up a project to bring back the old Hockenheim circuit
I don't think you get permission to fell the new trees on the old track ;)
@@Circuitsofthepast let's rebuild it at another location ;-)
Hi Max, I'd join you. Those endless high speed straights were amazing. The setup of the cars was really complicated due to the giant difference between the straights and the infield 'Motodrom' , which now is almost the complete circuit.
Plz do!
same thoughts😭
I was there in 1998-the sound of an F1 car blasting into the forest was unreal. I get goosebumbs thinking about it...
The new track is a shame i must say.
Ironically, they want to make the circuit more public friendly. But a huge part of the public don't like the new track.
I was at Spa and I was at the straight just after el rouge in the stand the noise of the cars is just incredible and the speed aswell, you need to go there it is absolutely amazing
Excuse me. How about safety of the drivers....?!
@@edoardoperazza7785 So when its all about Safety-why is Monaco still unchanged?
@@taloofa yeah that is a good question
Glad I was able to witness it with my dad at least once in 2000, I wasn't that old but there are days as a child you simply cant forget and memorize so well. Also have a cap signed from Heidfeld and Salo so couldnt have wished for more that day.
Nostalgia kicks hard right now
Thanks for sharing this memory!
Hockenhiem was a classic, Like Silverstone, Spa and Monza. Now we have THAT shambles of a track.
I agree with you, the new hockenheim is awful
@@garymarshall3212 I think the old hockenheim is too much unsafe for nowadays F1 cars, you don't?
@@edoardoperazza7785 no, it was too long. that's all. they lost radio on the other side of the track, fans just stay in the arena and can"t see overtaking in the straight. and at that time, bring back a car was just too far. nowadays it could be done
I flew over Hockenheim last year and you can still see the classic layout.. Made me very sad :(.
I flew over Hockenheim in the 90's, when the old track was still there. "Hey that's Hockenheim" I yelled in the plane :) I also made a photo of it, which is not very clear. You only can recognize the gravel traps of the chicanes.
Circuits of the past did you still have the photo?I want to see the photo nice video anyway just subscribed!
Thank you.Yeah I have that photo somewhere in a box (I just moved in May).
I miss the old circuit too.
That a "prove" they can rebuilt the old layout. Seeing this video there aren't any trees on the path of the road ,so in a very unlikeable scenario they could rebuilt
They should've kept it.
Kevin F1 I thought the same thing while watching this
Nah, it was overdue. The characteristic of the track was too old. Nobody really enjoyed it anymore. Almost all drivers prefer the newer version
Old Hockenheim never was very popular by the drivers. But many fans loved it bacause ot it's high speeds and going with low downfoce through the Motodrom. Even if they would modernize it, they should kept the old track instead of destroy it.
@@Circuitsofthepast The new is much better, and now the people in the circuit can watch the show. Barrichelo did a awesome race in 2000 startin from 18th and winning, but no one in the track saw that. But I have the same feeling of old Interlagos. I prefer the newtrack, but they should've kept the old one for respect.
@@BarataJhones At Interlagos they let the old track in tact. When you watch the Brazilian GP you can see the old parts :) Juslt like the old banking at Monza during the Italian GP: ruclips.net/video/fp3N4tw2LR0/видео.html
Very sad to see how that track looks today. One of the best classic circuits ever
I've seen legends like Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell during many years in this circuit. It was one of my favorites. I am very sad now watching the poor state of this place. Thanks for your videos. Adriano, from Brazil.
Obrigado!
I am from Indonesian, i love Hockenheim old circuit, trully i am cry if i remember this circuit, fantastis speed formula one,
From Indonesian , love formula one 90's
Blinding fast. So many great memories of this magnificent circuit. God rest the soul of Jimmy Clark.
When I was there, it was a weird feeling to be at Jim Clarke´s memorial site. But it was even weirder at Patrick Depaillers site right in the woods. It felt so peaceful. Ofc he is not buried there but it had a special charisma knowing that this place is so abandoned now. Almost as if the trees and bushes protect this place now.
There is a video on RUclips of Wayne Rainey winning the 1989 500cc German gp at the old Hockenheim. Incredible track, so fast even watching it on tv I remember the speed combined with the heat haze in the distant as the riders came into focus. Big loss to all motorsport really, was so exciting.
In my opinion today's Hockenheimring is pretty boring. I prefer this old layout.
then u never seen full races on old-hock. Pretty boring most of the time(ex. crashes on first 4-5 laps) and very overdue. It was similar to Monza, but without good overtakes on that straights (only lapping)
Really?
Really?
Missing old circuit, with top speed sectors. Now its a shame.
Nah for F1 too boring
I fell in love with the old layout seeing the races there in the early '90s and then playing it in Microprose Grand Prix. It was such a great circuit because you couldn't afford to lose time on the straights so you would have to slide around the stadium with low downforce. It still remains my all-time favourite track and I still enjoy playing it in sims, especially in Grand Prix Legends, where there's also the pre-chicanes version. Such a pity seeing it like this, I have no idea why they didn't keep it for historical racing, where the people aren't that many.
Yes that was the funny thing on old Hockenheim. With low downforce setup through the twisty stadium section. The drivers also enjoyed the transition from the lonely ride through the woods and the busy stadium full of spectators.
Microprose Grandprix, brings back memories. This was one of my favorite tracks.
I liked it, because the lonely straight gave you some mental rest, and it was nice just driving through the woods. It was like a movie, where you drive alone in the fantasy woods, and suddenly come back to reality at the stadium.
My favorite Grand Prix track!
As a kid I watched the F1 races on TV and this was always my favorite, the insanely long flat out zones and then the suddenly twisting Stadium part was something special.. Might have been boring to watch from the stands as the field of cars stretched out, but great action and sound on TV!
I love this old circuit design, but commercial interest killed this old one.
I watched some absolute legendary WorldSBK and 500cc GP (MotoGP) races on TV in the 90s. As a kid, I always found it a mystical circuit - how the bikes would disappear into the forest for most of the lap, slipstreaming each other, before a last lap lunge on the brakes into the stadium. As an adult now it still holds that mystique.
That was the magic of old Hockenheim. The contrast between the lonely section through the woods and the crowd packend stadium.
I believe the old Hockenheim and Spa curcuits were the best courses ever designed and built in the history of auto racing. It's truly sad they are gone. Thank you!
So many good memories watching the cars fly by on TV... Playing old F1 games and Superbike 2000 on this track were my favourite.
They should have kept it maybe for historic purposes and as a tourist attraction
I got into Formula One in the early 90s, through my brother who loved the Jordan team (as he loved anything to do with Ireland, even though he was German). 1991 was also the year the computer game Formula One Grand Prix from MicroProse came out. I played that game for hundreds of hours. And Hockenheimring has always been my favorite track ever since. In the 2000s I finally got to be at Hockenheim for a Formula One weekend because I got free tickets via a team sponsor (who coincidentally sponsored the Jordan team). At that time the track was already shortened, very much to my disappointment. My seat was where the old track turns in the new "Parabolika". I'm quite shocked to see how little is left of the old track. Nature took its land back.
I just got into Formula One earlier this year after being pretty clueless about all of these classic circuits in countries around the world, so I knew nothing of Hockenheimring. All I can say is I really wish they would've kept the old circuit. It was unique. The new circuit seems so boring, too similar to other circuits on the Formula One calendar. I have both Project Cars 2 on PS4 and it's a lot of fun getting to race on the old Hockenheimring. Watching old Grand Prix videos on the old circuit really makes you gain an appreciation for the uniqueness of the old circuit. Real shame to see it abandoned and overgrown.
Yes it's a shame what they did. And so unnecessary. Old Hockenheim was not a drivers circuit, but it was unique and provided variety on the F1 calendar. As you said, now it's an average track.
It was one of the tops circuits of formula 1. I think everyone miss it so much. Saudades!
It's a miss because most F1 track now look the same. Old Hockenheim was not a drivers circuit, but it was a good alternation on the calendar. Just like Monza, Monaco, the Hungaroring and Spa-Francorchamps.
A wonderful channel! Thanks for all those memories and facts about the old circuits. 👏🏻
The one circuit layout I truly miss. I used to love watching them blast through the woods.
The OstKurve changed into a green grave yard........ REALLY VERY SAD!! I know that was the turn that took Patrick Depailler's life, but it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING to watch the reductions and post re-accelerating.....
Who will ever forget the in car footage of Stefan Johansson, flat out down the straight, through the forest and there was a deer standing on the track! Murray Walker nearly lost his mind commentating! Epic memory from the late 80's.
Seeing stuff like this makes me humble about mankind. It's crazy how quick nature returns when we aren't there..
Very nostalgic. I still remember the great race in 1997 Berger won, there... Not everything was better than today, in earlier times.. but the circuits they WERE, for sure!!
So much heritage of racing that shouldnt be forgotten. It wouldnt cost that much just to keep the old track in shape for the people to see .....
To be fair its not in as bad of a condition as I wouldve thought, to bring it back wouldn't be as enormous an undertaking as we've been led to believe, wouldn't it be awesome to see it back, this was the one race I'd hang out for all year as a kid!
RIP to the real Hockenheim
If the people in power want it it could happen. But they will never give permission to fell the 16 year old trees for a reconstruction of old Hockenheim. Yes it would be great if they do so. But the reality is that the real Hockenheimring is a circuit of the past.
Writing in german...
That‘s where I watched my first my first F1 Race live ( GP Germany ‚82), including the fight between Piquet & Salazar. Will never forget the sound, when the cars approached Ost-Kurve..Good old days
I'm glad Project Cars2 managed to relived this old track within the game. It is indeed very dangerous straights. What an atmosphere watching the old track being taken by Mother Nature itself. Or maybe FIA WEC should build the old one back.
I love the old lay-out, new Hockenheim sucks!
Also the old Spa in Belgium is better, I miss the old bus stop chicane.
Hallo Herman. Ich liebe deinen Kanal und deine Videos. Du bist ein klasse Typ, mach weiter so 👍
Danke!
Fantastic love your channel
Thank you :)
Thank you for this great picture.
Old Hockenheim after 2001: Change da world , my final message , goodbye...
After seeying last race, the chanches where good to bring more spectacel towards the gp.
The old Hockenheim whas a real Temple of speed, +340kmh , where most of the times the leader would finish with a big lead on the number 2 car. What i remeber the most is the qualifying session where 3 drivers had the same time, to the dousents off a second>>> schumi, frentzen and the last 1 i cant remeber without google!
Great vids btw, you got a new sub!
Thank you. The race with 3 drivers had the same time was not at old Hockeheim, but at Jerez de la Frontera in 1997. The other one was Jacques Villeneuve.
Thank you for this yourney through this old majestic race trac. The current layout in my opinion is a Mickey-Mouse trac only. Blessed is the old Hockenheimring, where the 10-cylinders were screaming out all they had.
I remember also the V12's.
Rubens Barrichello 2000 Hockenheim!!!
Yeah with the track walker
my first F1 race I saw^^
This breaks my racing heart.

Show.
That was a tragedy for the sport, to mutilate (because that's literally what they did) such an iconic circuit.
This was my favorite circuit from my childhood, it's so sad and nostalgic to see it that way.
That hurts...
Incredible
Good video about the fate of an emblematic circuit such as Hockenheim. I did not know its current condition, it is a pity it hasn´t been conserved. When looking at your video I quickly remembered the old TV broadcasts of the F1 German GP in the late 70´s and my father thinking about the beauty of such European track in the woods. Greetings from Argentina.
Gacias. I agree they should preserve the old track. But the circuit owners want a compact track. The demolitiuon of the old track was the result of a political comproise. They need the ground to plant tree as a campensation for the felled trees for the new track. However, it was an unnessecary reconstruction. Certainly in view of the uncertain future of the German Grand Prix. Greetings from the Netherlands.
@@Circuitsofthepast Hello, I understand, thanks for your explanation, surely the old circuit was also more dangerous than the new one, and the accidents of pilots such as, for example, Jim Clark, Patrick Depaillier, account for it. Safety conditions improved through the last decades and so the tracks, maybe loosing the enchantment of the past. So German GP is doubt un the future?.
No, not the track owner wanted to change Hockenheim, Bernie was!!!
The new trees are for balancing the lost trees for the new track.
Greetings from a town next to Hockenheim.
@@BeOCeKa If you can understand German you should watch this documentary. There they figured it all out. It was because of the hight ambitions of the owners of those days. Just like the rollercoaster project that led to the bankruptcy of the Nürburgring.

Running Hockenheim on my F1 2000 computer game was such fun. I'm floored by what happened to it in the redesign. Such a crying shame this once magnificent track has been effectively neutered. At least I still can run it on the PC.
Ese sí era Hockenheim!! El nuevo es sólo una porción. Que vuelva el verdadero Hockenheim!!!
I already knew how it looks today but its so sad
I lived in the area many years ago and had horses at a stable on the other side of the forest. We used to drive our carriage horses thru the forest and around the old track. Very sad to see it going back to nature. Attended several races there and used to eat in the restaurant and stay in the hotel in the ring near the start finish line.
The old hockenheim was sensational,
Eine geniale Rennstrecke.
Die neuen Rennstrecken sind alle zum vergessen!
Sad I remember watching Ayrton flying though them Forrest’s
Yeah, I remember also the fight with Gerhard Berger in the Ferrari in 1993.
THX from japan
Those bastards abandoned these iconic circuits and built new ones in bloody deserts. My heart aches on the sheer stupidity of it all. I loved this old layout of Hockenheim which to me was the most beautiful of all the formula 1 circuits. I just wish someone would bring it back.
Remember well, long straights and the sound off full throtell V12 V10 V8 and Piquet kicking Salazar
Goryar ...or seeing what Schwantz did on Rainey...the outbraking of the century imho
We lived 8n Hiedelburg in the early 1960s and would go to the track from the woods....free!
The scene that bikes or cars run through in forest was very attractive and characteristic individuality of Hockenheim.
Lost of attraction of one and only is still very unfortunate.
This track was a temple of speed. I loved it in his original way
I love the old track but the new one has provided great races, they should have kept both layouts.
One thing I love about Hockenheim, Monza, Spa is that they are tracks for the driver, as a fan it makes it harder to follow the action but watch an onboard of these tracks with the car between rows of trees and it feels amazing how the circuit blends with nature.
Drone footage following the old track would have ben awesome.
Yeas that would be great. However, it's illegal to fly a drone above the old track. It's just on the edge of a no fly zone. So I have 3 options: Film it illegal. Ask for permission. Or film it from a distance where it's allowed to fly.
@Circuits of the past
"It's just on the edge of a no fly zone" But still within? That's unfortunate.
Just fly below treetop level!!! 🙏🤘
@@johnhutchison9782 still not smart to do it illegally. They still can find it out on this channel even if you don't get caught on the spot.

There Is a lack of scenic rural tracks. Old Hockenheim was special with its beautiful forest.

Great video Herman, thanks :) Didn't you post this a while ago ?
It's a remake of the video I uploaded in 2016. I changed the scenes a little and added a map. Many people asked me for maps in the videos.

Well MotoGP would have also been interesting if they still used this track instead of Sachsenring
This old track brings back the image of Eddie Lawson,Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz racing their hearts out...lapping the backmarkers and then the sight of Randy Mamola powerwheeling out of each chicane and corners
And the motorcycles used a faster version of the Jim Clark Chicane and had no chicane before the Ostkurve. I remember also great breaking manouvres for the fast corner into the Motodrom :)
Has that grass grown over where the old tarmaced track once was? Or would the track at that top section have been ripped up first for nature to take over?
they tore it up and planted trees there
My dad took me there in the early seventies for Interserie. Kind of like the European Can Am. Remember the 917s. Sitting in the stands at the Sachs Kurve you could see them coming.
Love ❤️
I'm crying...
I Love old Hockenheim
Such a shame. The Ostkurve should have been preserved. I miss the old track, even if the drivers don't.
Interesting ! I was already check on google map and see that the old track is not much visuable anymore. They could have keep a part from track inside forest (who is legendary, i was enjoy drive in there With racing simulator), i find the actual track too small. Look like they wanted that all race is visuable from the spectators.
nothing against the environment and the forests ... the reforestation in this case of the circuit was useless. because there is already an urbanized area bordering the forest. for me since hockenheim lost the forest circuit, it's no longer the traditional hockenheim .. motoring legends are out there.
