Fun fact: this franshise holds the Guinness World Record for the most characters in a piece of media, with 1,768 characters!
Oh boy, and I thought remembering names from The Wheel of Times books was exhausting.
I heart of Anpanman because Saitama and the franchise name "One Punch Man" (Wanpanman in romanized Japanese) are references to him. Course I've seen his merch around in Little Tokyo too.
This video could've gone a bit more with the details but it was still very fun thanks to your and Liz's great comparisons to Marvel. One thing to note that, like Doraemon, Anpanman's love is so tied to that ever so iconic dessert that kids and adults adore in Japan, and when it's a generational thing, it's hard to beat (over there). Got to hand it to those creators who lived through those rough times in Japan....they made I.P.s that have really stood the test of time.
The voice actress who plays Anpanman also played Thomas the Tank Engine in the Japanese dub. I'm not joking.
He had some success in the middle east in the 90s. So did other light hearted shows like Doraemon and Chibi Maruko Chan. The latter having a following to this day.
Anpanman even has a goofy Sinhala dub!
Somehow, the 199 hero great battle super sentai crossover for Goseiger and Gokaiger actually somewhat references this animated series. Or, just mentions the name. yeah, some random kid in this movie mentions the name, although anpan is probably some Japanese food or something.
That's because one of the Sentai members, Denzi Blue/Daigoro Oume, is literally powered by Anpan, a literal Anpan Man
It’s Anpan Man isn’t it?
Ye
Definitely
Yep
oh boy
fun fact- india, in the late 2000s and early 2010s, had the anpanman anime airing... it had a minor following hre around that time. Even now, some adults of my generation, who grew up watching the cheesy hindi dub of the show, with him helping others by sharing a piece of his anpan head for them to eat, and get stronger by replacing his old anpan heads with newly baked ones.... we remember it all. It was a fun run lasting a few years before going off air around mid 2010s.....
“Saitama is based off Anpanman”
NO SHOT
tbf, not everyone who likes OPM, would bother to know who Anpanman is.
I didn't know that until this video
6:02 How could the Fantastic Four movie by Roger Corman (made in the 1990s) and James Cameron (who essentially didn't exist until the 1980s) have anything to do with something occurring in 1966?
Morbius
This was going through superhero’s through the 90’s, 2000’s, and the modern day.
@@Marcosatsu But, you say that these things that happened more recently resulted in a Marvel bankruptcy that occurred 57 years ago. Are you sure about that?
My bad
@@Marcosatsu it was 1996 not 1966.
If you haven’t noticed, 12 Anpanman movies have been dubbed into English and Spanish, and released on Tubi since 2021. No subbed option though.
On what I thought of the English dubs, the first 10 films felt like a mixed bag with flaws in the singing, editing, and voice direction and maybe have limited resources. However, the recent 2 films just released days ago on Tubi (Fluffy Flurry, and Dororin) improved in some parts by fixing the singing and editing, and the actors have gotten used to their characters enough. Hope they keep improving in the future.
Speaking of which, on the Japanese side, the latest movie releasing on June 28: “Baikinman and the Book of Lulun”, will have Anpanman and Baikinman team-up to battle against a big blue elephant villain in the picture book world. Pretty much a Goku and Frieza tournament/Frontiers Sonic and Eggman team-up vibe if you ask me!
Like I Said I Remember This Show This Series Called *A N P A N M A N* From Many Years Ago When I Was a Child Kid… Since By Taking Forward to Present Day, I Met Yokai Academy Y was a Medium Big Japan Tokusatsu Anime in Best World Ever!
i have no idea how me as a serbia somehow found this guy while i was on the internet when i was younger
how many youtube rabbit holes has my child self been through
Whenever American anime fans start to get too snooty about what's good and what's not, what shows matter and don't, based on their experiences in the U.S. anime market, I like to remind them that Doraemon and Anpanman are the two most iconic anime characters in Japan. And both of them have pretty much no presence here in the United States.
It's always hilarious when weebs think all the edgy perv pandering garbage anime they like is what's popular in Japan, but then u do research and find out the biggest cartoons on Japan are family and kids shows. They've convinced themselves that all anime is "mature" when, just like in the west, the most beloved shows are made for the kids.
@@KhayJayArt It still happens from season to season. A season or two ago, the biggest anime release in the U.S. was probably Chainsaw Man, a violent horror action anime. But that season, the biggest across Japan was probably Onimai, a breezy comedy about a shut-in man who gets turned into a girl by his genius sister as an attempt to cure his depression.
Shut up Weeb.@KhayJayArt
I ABSOLUTELY love Anpanman!!
pretty sure i saw this show in hindi in india when i was young
Goku has nothing over anpanman
Lucky man is also cool too.
とうとう気付いてしまったか…日本の覇権ヒーロー作品に…
はい
Unbelievable
Marvel commentary invalid cuz no mention of Blade which saved Marvel
Dont mind me, Im just here commenting Marcos using Three Houses music.
Anapanman Is So God Tier Baby
Anpan man away
Love Anpanman
Anpanman, clearly
Thats good, enough. The bread motif is cute enough and the backstory is tragic but hopefully wholesome
Fun fact anpunman is way longer then one piece
guess one piece is second of the longest shown in the series
Not even close. Sazae-san dethrones both of them with 7920 episodes.
@@MegaBlackMP Sazae San is based on a legendary gag manga for ladies and general audiences too.
I knew Anapanman was big in Japan, but outselling Marvel, DC, and even Kamen Rider?! Damn, I'm impressed!
Yea it's crazy.
very strange that this come exclusive japan make lot money that surpasses other famous media genre and it only minor heard which totally surprise and it actual real thing.
Outselling Kamen Rider? Yes. DC and Marvel? Not so much.
also at one time, Disney wanted to buy Anpanman but Takashi Yanase turn them down, and Anpanman is also the top character in all of Japan even overlooking Hello Kitty
The Moomins’ creator turned down the acquisition of her Moomins by Disney too.
5:48 I find it hard to believe there was ever a time where _Spider-Man_ struggled to sell merch.
History is weird dude
Funny enough, I heard of Anpanman though K-pop. I’ve seen many videos where Kpop idols mention him. Hell, BTS literally has a song titled “Anpanman”
Edit: and it’s mentioned in this video lol
Many Japanese properties have been aired in the Philippines but surprisingly Anpanman wasn't one of them - I remember seeing the character and some VHS I think from my neighbor when I was a kid as he's half Japanese and I remember liking the character and wonder why there isn't a local voice for the show.
ANPANMAN IS A GOD
you know he's huge when a kpop group made a song based on him
i had an anpanman toy back when i was still a kid and didn't know who he was.. i just thought it was just another toy, imagine my surprise to see anpanman in mako's tweet
some of the Anapanman movies were dub in english not too long ago
My thoughts is Power Rangers look like Marvel and Kamen rider look like DC
While Marvel and DC are competitors, Kamen Rider and Super Sentai were partly created by Shotaro Ishinomori.
also his theme song lyrics is metal as heck for a children's song, lol.
I guessed it was him based on the premiere's thumbnail, looked at it for a few secs and connected the dots
The extent of his influence was lost on me though, One Punch Man being as much as I knew.
So this was still a fun watch. Speaking of OPM, another similarity besides Saitama looking like him
is that phonetically, the titles are very similar and I think it was intended IIRC. Wanpanman, as opposed to Anpan
Time for the gritty, insufferablely "adult" reboot
What does Rachel Suckstobeher's Snow White has to do with this?
I don't think we had a super hero boom in the west so much as we had a Marvel boom, with DC mostly being perceived as inferior and never having the that much success in cinema during that time. The Flash failing was likely more because of it being from a brand that was already seen as inferior, was damaged by years of poorly received movie and stared a sex pest groomer who everyone knew about. Not to say Marvel aren't past their peek of popularity cause they clearly are, but you get my point.
Isn’t there a BTS song called Anpanman?
It's time to serve our new lord Anpanman-sama
ANPANMAN SWEEP‼️‼️‼️
I use to whatch anpan man but with phone
Anapanman!
4:44 - Okay am I hearing things or is even that bloody JAM Project song based around Anpanman? I mean you played it back to back and now I feel like I'm going crazy XD
I mean yeah anpanman was always one of those things like hello kitty where growing up I just saw his face every now and then.
To he fair I did hear streaming is having a hand in what's going on with the Superhero films today.
lmao anpanman
As expect from the inapiration of one punch man
AMERITOKU WHAT A TERM, absolutely what you'd call the DC CW shows
