- Mischa Barton talks to ET’s Katie Krause about her time on ‘The O.C,’ including on-set drama and dating. The actress also reveals that she thinks a reboot could happen and teases her new film, ‘Spree,’ out in theaters and on-demand on Aug. 14.

Marissa and the OC is always gonna be iconic, am glad she is now embrasing her character because everyone loves Marissa and her death still one the devasting and shocking moments in TV history. Sadly that was the start of the end of such iconic show which can still run at least 3 seasons more .

I believe they wrote Mischa's character into a corner where they had no choice but to remove Marissa. They foolishly had her do the same naive behaviour over and over again - more specifically, over-trusting a bad boy (or girl) to the point of complete disaster. Rather than killing her off, they should have had her go live with her dad instead so there would always be the hope that she could return one day.
Marissa's death, plus the horrible story lines in season four ended the show. For example, Taylor and Ryan's relationship was not only unbelievable but just annoying to watch. The only plus in that season was that it fortunately offered a lot of closure in the final episode. I loved how they (albeit sadly) showed Marissa when Ryan was reminiscing while leaving their old home in Newport. Seeing her one last time made you miss her and reminded us how much of an integral part of the group she was, and that she could never be replaced.
I have HBOMax and I REFUSE to watch seasons 3 and 4. I think honestly looking back those seasons were trash and honestly they burned through lot of the storyline too fast. I dont care if Mischa wanted out, writing her off minus her death would've been better. She could have been redeemed.
Tbh I think they gave her and Ryan those tragic storylines because they wanted Seth and Summer’s relationship to be the main focus of the show . Especially since Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody were dating at the time. I remember all the girls in my year in highschool hated Marisa and loved Summer. Marisa was my favourite

Please DO NOT reboot the OC. Don't get me wrong, I was and still am a diehard fan of the show. We used to have OC nights in high school. (Thursday Nights, 9pm, FOX, 😆) But can't we just enjoy all of the reruns, and splendid nostalgia of the early 2000s, instead diluting something special a la reboot? I'm over all of this rehashing. #LetItRest
I don't think it'll ever happen with the original cast. The only one open to it I think would be Rachel. Mischa has always trash talked the show but she might do it out of desperation at this point (assuming they found out a way to revive the character). Ben and Adam would flat out say no- they've moved on to other things and they never seem excited in interviews when The OC is brought up. They've made it pretty clear that they're over it. So yeah, without Ben and Adam, it would never happen.
The only way they'd reboot it is with a whole new cast, like a remake series. I don't really see them doing this either. Although the OC left behind a pretty impactful legacy, it was actually a somewhat short lived show (4 seasons isn't that long in the TV world) and it had low ratings in season's 3 and 4. I feel like that's a big reason it hasn't been rebooted- they don't think people would watch.
Yup! Also when a show starts off in high school, its really hard to take that magic beyond that time. Obviously there are plenty of shows that follow people in their 20s and 30s that are pure magic, hence How I Met Your Mother, Friends, New Girl, but these shows didn't start off in high school, they started off with the characters already in their mid to late 20s and early 30s, it's totally different.
If they reboot it, they can always rename it something like it The Fresh Prince of Bel air...

I watch this show every year in February, either on my DVDs or streaming services, currently watching it now. It was my friend’s favourite show when we were kids & i watch it every time i think of him. It’s taken like over a month to watch this time around.

@@FertilityTV They were sick of her shit. She was skipping so many filming days and holding up the entire production that nobody could work with her anymore. Sometimes you need to cut a limb off before it develops gangrene. Season 4 should have just been a two hour movie dealing with her death and moving on to college.

People are still mad about that 14 years later. If they were to do a reboot, it could be like an "alternate reality" of the The. O.C. where Marissa is still alive and it shows her and the main core (Ryan, Seth, Summer, etc.) and what their lives have been like nearly 15 years later. I'd be interested in seeing that happen.

And they could start it with the comic drawing of the scene of Ryan carrying Marissas body from the car wreck. Maybe. But make it from Marisas point of view. Like she was always such a train wreck, she teamed up with Seth to create an alternate life so she could see what life would be like without her. 🤷🏽♀️ Something like that. Maybe. I dunno. Lol how else could they bring Marissa back? “It was all a dream” is so cliche.
I watched this when it first aired. Then I bought the fancy series DVD set. I've since watched the entire thing at least a dozen times. It is my all time favorite series. I still grieve the death of Marissa when I think about it. Her character really got the emotional shit end of the stick. I absolutely hate that they time lapsed months after her death and there was no funeral or days after.. And then the last season is just full of time lapses and abrupt ending. The death of Marissa was the death of the show. Seth and Sandy are my favorite characters. I've always loved to hate Julie and genuinely appreciate Ryan's protective and loyal instincts. I remembering wishing Sandy and Kjirsten were real and that most parents were like them. The hardships and emotional depth were amazing. The idea that love conquers all. that always trying to do what's right and seeking truth and justice really resignate in my spirit. Watching Summers transformation in personality through the years was cool. She was the only character that actually evolved.
OC is still a very, very good series for me and I've always wondered over the years why Ryan and Marissa didn't get a better ending - respect

@@efeklau6502 okay listen to me on this one, I can’t say they dated for real or not since I was like 3 when the show came out, but one thing I saw on an interview with the cast on the first season made me think he liked her from the start, on the interview Adam and Ben asked mischa what her ideal type was, she was like “someone with great style and nothing like you two” and then Ben said something like “what are you really looking for in a guy” all serious and she just said a guy with a good ass
And then you can clearly see and hear Adam whispering “ben’s got a great ass” so this is just a wild guess but I think he had a crush on her, and Adam obviously knew about it and was kind of the annoying friend trying to play Cupid or sum. And she can’t ever speak about it bc she was underage during filming. But it is pretty obvious how she talks about the set being too much drama to handle bc of dating then denying if she dated one of her cast mates, so yeah I think they dated.

Soap operas like Days of Our Lives bring back characters from the dead all the time if they were to make a reboot of The O.C they could bring back Marissas character and have her wake up from a coma in Hawaii where her dad had taken her and has her put on life support when every one else assumed she was dead.

@@dandylion2279 Agreed, I feel like she's the reason why people watched the show. Once she left at the end of Season 3, ratings tanked and then it got cancelled after Season 4. It bummed me out. I wanted at least 2 more seasons, 3 preferable. The 4th season was meh, some episodes were wacky and didnt make sense, plus the storylines for some of them were corny. I wished Mischa had stuck around for the next season, then there would have been more seasons.

She said no maybe to not get anybody into trouble cause of the difference in age. lol When her character died, she talked about the problems on set and with the show not being as good, it was really a nice exit for her. The show had no juice left anyway.
When her character died, the show was basically circling the drain anyways. The ratings were super low in season 3 and Fox was already thinking of canceling it. They killed off Marissa in the season 3 finale for shock value to get people talking and start watching again. They were basically trying to force Fox to renew it for a 4th season. It did work, but only temporarily. The season 3 finale where Marissa died got really good ratings, but death scene itself seemed to piss off a lot of people, so it kind of backfired on them. The ratings just sunk again as soon as season 4 began, sealing the show's fate.
@@takethechance7422 Yea by that time, I had pretty much lost interest myself and watched it a little bit after her death so it worked but I went back to not watch it again. They had pissed me off too much by that point. They should have gone back to what made it work. Some elements that annoyed me over time was having girls being on the guys' cases all the time with Ryan it was that annoying chick and for Seth it was Summer for a whole season. I did not understand what was the point of that. Also soap operas like that need strong villains and they kept killing them off or turning them good. Biggest lost was the death of Marissa's grand-father. He was the biggest villain and his presence was important to the show, it made everything fall into place. He was like the JR Ewing of the OC. Was pretty stupid to get rid of him.

Marissa had to have that ending, it was the big thing back in the day that the strong independent female leads don't get their happy ever after... Same with Jen on Dawson's Creek, Prue on Charmed... All of them were those characters that liked to shake things up and had their own way of doing things. Also, there was always an additional character that acted as their opposite, the one we were supposed to look up to more: Joey vs Jen, Phoebe vs Prue and Summer vs Marissa. At least that's my take on that.

Just one of my all time favourite shows. Sorry it just is. Waiting to binge again just did last lockdown this one is American Horror story. But l can see bringing Marissa back for sure. Mischa sounds fresh and happy here the interview went well.

I never got into the show, however, I do like most of the actors on the show. I saw Peter on Broadway not that long ago and he was phenomenal. I am glad to see Mischa is doing okay now. I remember when she was a mess and over-indulged in the L.A. scene.

I suppose it there was talks of a reboot with the old cast living their adult lives now they could have Mischa be brought back into it as a new character but still be a love interest of Ryan and that way they can give the fans what they want still without messing up the original storyline. Even through a corny line in there like 'you remind me of someone I used to know' a bit tongue in cheek but it could work?! haha!
It's interesting how everyone else on the cast seems to be so happy with eachother, and says it was their best time, and that everyone was adorable etc.. but Misha think its all drama...

Please do not reboot the o.c !!! It’s a iconic show from the 2000’s , therefore that show should stay iconic. Also season 4 was ruined because they killed off Marissa cooper . The final season was season wasn’t the same without the core friendship, that attracted the audience in the first place.

I'm still confused about Mischa & the show The Hills. . I never watched the Hills I never really watched any other teen dramas besides the OC (nor liked) so what is The Hills a reality show? and does that' make her a reality star turned actress or actress turned reality star? I don't get it 🫤
I didn't know this was Mischa Barton...
I started to watch the OC because I thought it was going to be about a culture clash with a spotlight on class and privelege. (The rich kids were all doing the same things or worse as the poor kid but he was always seen as the bad influence and he always had more to lose) All these things I saw in the pilot. It seemed really interesting and kind of gritty. Then about 3 episodes in it was just teen sex and love triangles. (Love triangles are fine, if that's not all there is) I thought there was going to be some substance to the show and there just wasn't any. A show can be fun AND have substance.
You should’ve kept watching. There was a lot of plots with the adults and storylines that went deeper into all the parents lives and their work as well as the kids lives.

Mischa asked to be taken off the show because she was tires of the character and wanted to do movies. Mischa also ruined the twist of her death by Spoiling it the night before it aired in one of the Jimmy’s late night Shows. Also during the time of the episode it was said that the set was overcrowded with guests from the younger main characters. Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody broke up during season 3 and they were not getting along.
Josh schwartz had moved on to develop Chuck and Gossip Girl and The OC lost his focus leading to crazy drops in viewership. This show was so good, but even today after Mischa’s interview in the “welcome to the OC Botches Podcast” you could tell she didn’t care much about the show or the death of her character.

I'm from Brazil and I think watching OC maybe 8 or 10 times, I stopped counting. I'll be honest, after Marissa dies, things get boring. Taylor is too boring.

I love The OC, it is a masterpiece. Don't ruin it with a reboot. Reboots never makes a great show better. Prison Break, Arrested Development, Veronica Mars... Fuller House... Great first runs, reboots nah

people did not like Season 4 which is why it was canceled but still did have a satisfying series finale cause there was a wedding but people loved Marissa and they loved Ryan and Seth and Summer which Seth and Summer got their happy ending but no Marissa and Ryan and people hated Taylor as a character the group never even hung out with her and thought she was annoying until after Marissa died and suddenly she was apart of the group which makes no sense. Taylor was her replacement, I hated that character that I would rather have her sister as her replacement even being younger is still so much better. I loved her sister as a teen and she was played by the same actress who played Oliver Queens little sister Thea Queen on Arrow. Summer completely changed into this unrecognizable person after she lost her best friend and broke up with Seth because she was spiraling and the story went down hill without the main girl in the show Taylor was the most annoyingcharacter on the show I wanted Marissa Cooper to return for at least the series finale to say goodbye to Ryan but it didn't happen....

I don't think they need a reboot .but maybe something similar to like the Gilmore girls did. Have four more seasons ten to 8 episodes with the original cast now paying it forward. Flash back full episode and a what if with Marissa with Ryan be interesting it's crazy it'll be 20 yrs soon this came out right when I was in H.S but Mischa Barton seem to put yourself in the mist of the drama (The Hills) cause you're not willing to take accountability🤔 just my sense of your body language . Beside thought you two were over the drama but you're still dwelling on that 🥱 Rachel moved on I'm sure you can too .
