  • You won't want to miss this week's video on how to look after your prized possession - your favourite axe! There are a TON of opinions on what works, and what does not, but lets get down into the ingredients of different products and how they work or don't. Also lots of advice on what to use for long term storage of axes to eliminate corrosion. Can I use Linseed oil? Need to stick around to the end to get the skinny on linseed oil usefulness.....or problems!

Great clarification video! I worked at a sporting goods store in college and saw lots of rusty firearms whose owners believed WD40 was a rust preventer.

I actually use Pam cooking spray! Everything is in my garage, so it all gets hot and cold, humid and dry! I use it on my pruning shears because it's plant base and doesn't leave a chemical burn on the cut. But I have found it works very well and have been using it for years! Great info and great video!

For long term storage I suggest good quality paste waxes, especially ones that are synthetic. They'll yield a dry, hard, clear coating that's stable over time.

I live in moderate humidity New Zealand and I use CRC Soft-Seal and if you live in a high humidity area I recommend CRC Industrial CPC 400 which claims a 2 year protection outdoors! I use both but think the CPC 400 is probably a bit of an overkill for where I live.

Thanks Jeff. It does have a lot of petroleum products in it, but also ingredients not allowed in Canada. This is the SDS for it www.tenaquip.com/product/crc-canada-sp-350-corrosion-inhibitor-aerosol-can-73262-ya179?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwkuqvBhAQEiwA65XxQIQrq3An2nRoCNdwdEgLfET06LJ79_E_94OmC4D7428UD6evqiYwBRoCJBAQAvD_BwE#pdp-description-anchor - looks like it would definitely protect against corrosion. The beauty of Krown is it is environmentally friendly to boot

Great info as always. I use a product called sno-seal when making my leather knife sheaths. It is beeswax based leather sealant. Might be worth checking out.

That would be great for the axe sheaths. Thanks Richard. Oh - and just popped a little surprise in the mail for you today....have fun!

Hey Rod, 3 in 1 oil works good for saw storage , it spreads good with a brush, I haven't tried it on axes yet but I think I will try the Krown, I have some already.

I have plenty of shop towels that get coated with bar oil when I wipe off the bars on my chainsaws. My bars and chains do not rust, so I figure if this oil is good enough for bars and chains it should protect my axes, too. I have other rust preventative lubricants but I use bar oil impregnated shop towels to wipe my axes down with. Second choice is linseed oil but it gets gummy. If you are sawing in pine, turpentine makes a good solvent for cleaning up pine pitch.

Yessir! All great suggestions. I also find linseed hardens as well.

    Hello,
Thank you for the video. I think it's perfect for me.
I have the problem that my axes rust in the leather.
I have already tested a few oils and sprays. I was never really satisfied.
If I have translated your video correctly, can I also use Vaseline to protect the leather against rust?
    Many thanks and
    Best regards from Germany

Krown seems to be quite didficult to find here in Massachusetts. Do you have any experience with Fluid Film? It's a lanolin based rust protectant widely available in big box stores that I've used in the past on other tools.

Just watched your video on ax handles which you did not and shame on you! For being a New England boy. What about the Hudson Bay style head? Am I the only one that's still uses that kind? I have four antique and one that's rather new.

Karl - there must be a word missing from your sentence above, I can't make hide nor hair of it. I think you meant to include another style of handle....but I could be wrong. I've heard about the Hudson's bay style axe head before - is the handle that goes in that unique? Always willing to learn

I literally just sprayed WD40 on my axe head right before watching this video. Hit pause, ran down into the basement and wiped it off !!
