The Duke was WAY WAY WAY too big for most people to use, so they made the S controller. In contrast: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/13/XboxOriginalController.jpg
the elite controler is definatly worth it. if you build a scuf with all the things the elite controler has (4 paddles, hairpin trigger, remapable paddle, etc.) it would be over $250
worth 150? maybe, probably not. but 250? LOLOLOLOLOL theres much cheaper alternatives. i just bought a 25 after glow controler and its pretty damn good for the price. its overpriced, whichever way you spin it. it might be really damn good but it doesnt stop it from being overpriced.
***** have you ever used the one for the xbox one? it might not be as good as the actual X1 controller but its a much better (money wise) alternative than that overpriced one.
Yeah, that is a pretty big oversight in my opinion. I mean I can look at other youtube videos to see the Fat xbox controller, but if you really want to do something like this I personally think you need to be a little more thorough and include everything.
+ItsCrystal I know and I heard it, but the video still seems incomplete. Again, if you title something "Evolution of the Xbox Controler!" you really should include every iteration to show side by side. Perhaps my expectations were too high.
GizmoOwl I still have mine in mint condition (exept for the controllers. Don't ask...) and funny enough, I own the 2004 glitched model. I say glitched because there was some bug or something (I'm not really sure) where for some apparent and unknown reason, you would have unlimited memory and not have to delete a single save file on it. I'm *VERY* lucky too because that glitch is stupidly rare and very few little people have it, let alone its *very* little known what causes it.👍
+Pablo Romero he means it feels like it's worth $150. Things can be worth 150, but they may not feel like it. The Xbox One Elite controller definitely feels like $150.
There's a problem with your Original Xbox controller. The model you used and the first one (or the duke) had slightly different layouts and shape of the controller, not just the size.
Greenfear SSB Not really. It's just a twistable D-pad. It's not too different... but if you are going for each and every minor change, it's a worthy addition.
The original xbox DOES have wireless controllers. It just has a thing you plug in the xbox. Choose player 1,2,3,4 and turn on the controller. Then bam. No wires
Rafael idk, but for me my headphone mic won't work for some reason... I can hear it working by blowing into it, but when I try to talk to my friends, talk to randoms in games or even stream no one can hear me. In some games it shows there's a mic plugged in but when I talk, no one can hear me and I'm like WTF!?
It is extremely ignorant to say that the elite controller is "definitely not worth it". It must be worth it to someone or it wouldn't have been sold out in stores 90% of its lifetime. Maybe it's not worth it to you but it's DEFINITELY worth it to a lot of people, including me.
not by much it just made the material a bit more slick and the controller was mostly all black. and also that was the xbox original controller, just a revised version of it.
This is an amazing video!! It’s very interesting of how they transform over the years. Keep up the good work and keep making great videos like this. P.S. I subscribed!
Where the hell is the best controller I have ever held in my life.... the FIRST xbox controller. If you weren't a child that controller was amazing!! It was so comfortable it hugged your hand!
i remember halo 1 and halo 2 on the og controller u would use the white and black button for switching grenades and turning on your flashlight in campaign and also remember the start button being on the side, the nostalgia
The paddles on the back of the Elite controller are unnecessary for me because I use the claw method. I think I’m going to remove them permanently. I got the Gears of War set which has shorter paddles, but even then, they get in the way somewhat. Anyway, nice vid, Matt!
This is definitely an interesting topic, but it would be more entertaining if you included some backstory to each controller; the design choices, what influenced these decisions and how well each controller was received by the public.
There were actually wireless controllers for the original xbox its just it wasnt built in but the controllers came with the recivers i have 2 of the controllers (with recivers)
I don't know man. All the customization you can have on the Xbox One Elite makes things much more convenient and it looks comfortable. I'd rather pay for that than a SCUF
The grip is different from the standard Xbone controller. The controller is meant for console gaming not PC even though it might have a bluetooth connection. When you play games like FPS, RPG, and etc. it saves you a bit of time from moving your thumb off the sticks. You're able to use all your fingers while your thumbs are on the sticks.
For competitive play, unless you claw then the xbox elite controller is somewhat worth it, especially because a scuf with the same specs can cost around 200-230 dollars. And even if you claw its still a very good and better controller, if you want to pay for it.
so... no mention of the multilayered button of the Original xbox controller? not many games used the function, but it had 2 levels of pressure detection for A B X and Y. the first game coming to my mind using it was Metal Gear Solid 2:Substance
The Xbox controller actually dates back to the Sega Saturn Pro controller, which was the template from which the Dreamcast controller was refined. And it was the Dreamcast controller that the original Xbox Dukes heavily aped and refined into their own controller. Really, the Duke is just a more ergonomic DC controller with an extra analog stick, white and black buttons (giving it six in the same rough arrangement as the old Saturn original controller) - and bit Xbox Logo covering up the VMU window (it even still has the two VMU/Memory card/expansion port configuration the DC controller had) In a way, the Xbox controller is descended from Sega's/Saturn controller designs - while the Playstation's controller is descended from Nintendo's/SNES design. Nintendo, themselves, have gone off the rails (N64 bat-thing, WiiMote, WiiU Tablet, switch-ery do add-ons, etc) with their own unique designs.
if u r watching in 2016 near christmas thats when the xbox1s came out somewhere near christmas idk u should of had that controller but is is the same as the normal xbox one controller its just smoother
I remember getting the Xbox 360 when I was in like the um 1st grade which was like 6-7years ago I was so obsessed with it (I still have it to this day and it still works) I would play it a lot and now I got the Xbox one and Jesus Christ I do not leave my room for nothing. its really cool to see how much the Xbox has changed though
One of the slots on the OG controller was for a rumble pack. They also need to update the Elite controller so that it works on bluetooth like the One S controller. Stupid as fuck to pay 150 for a controller to have to turn around and spend another 40-50 for a dongle to able to use with a PC.
I love this video! I kept laughing when you rubbed your finger/s on the controllers whenever they had a special material on them, also I love that you prefer Xbox over PS4 controllers. The console doesn't matter it is style(UI) and comfort-ability with controllers.
i vaguely remember having a 360 controller that had the black and white buttons, am i merging controlers, or was there a version for people who couldn't switch to the bumpers?
Please do the PlayStation controller evolution. I could also see this as a cool mini series, and you could also do companies like Nintendo and Sega. Just some food for thought
The Xbox one controller is very durable. I’ve dropped on accident so many times and it’s still has no cracks and works perfectly fine. I have the gears of war 4 Xbox one S
you left out a few... when this was posted the Xbox one had 4 types 1. 1.0- the one you showed 2. 2.0- the 3.5 jack one or the "HALO" one with bumper changes some with textured grips 3. The ELITE more or less the same as the 3.5 but better build 4. 3.0 or the Blu Tooth one whatever I'm just pulling hairs lolz
The Xbox controller is based off of the SEGA Dreamcast controller. A lot of people who were on the Dreamcast jumped ship when SEGA stopped being a hardware manufacturer. So a lot of ideas from that time went into the creation of the Xbox controller, you can clearly see the influence on the button layout and the general shape of the controller. I think SEGA would have made a lot cooler controller if they had stayed in the game longer but I´m not even gonna go there... None of the two would have been as successful as they are today unless they had meddled with both SEGA and Nintendo in the past, which there is history of if you do some research. Sorry don´t mind me I´m just getting old.
I play The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion on Xbox 360 and when you can hotkey things or whatever it would be easier with the four way d pad because I keep trying to push right in between and it's not built for that I guess.
Where is the XBOX "DUKE" controller? They are not that expensive and you could have used it as contrast between it and the Xbox original S controller.
CLOROX BLEACH thanks for the not working link u shitel
He used a FAKE chinese S Type controller in the video.. Why not just get an original, he can't be that poor!
The Duke was WAY WAY WAY too big for most people to use, so they made the S controller.
In contrast: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/13/XboxOriginalController.jpg
I got the original Xbox with the ORIGINAL fat controllers :D
I also got a wireless controller for Xbox, Original
same for both
I think I got two🤗👌 tho but they're called the fat priest I think
they are called dukes
+PhantomTaco yea there we go I forgot the name
the elite controler is definatly worth it. if you build a scuf with all the things the elite controler has (4 paddles, hairpin trigger, remapable paddle, etc.) it would be over $250
Same I have it and it's AWESOME af
worth 150? maybe, probably not. but 250? LOLOLOLOLOL theres much cheaper alternatives. i just bought a 25 after glow controler and its pretty damn good for the price. its overpriced, whichever way you spin it. it might be really damn good but it doesnt stop it from being overpriced.
+Juan Alejos your embarrassing for even bringing up the afterglow controllers....
+Darwin Ramirez you're
*****
have you ever used the one for the xbox one? it might not be as good as the actual X1 controller but its a much better (money wise) alternative than that overpriced one.
Evolution of PlayStation:
PS1: Same
PS2: Same
PS3: Same
PS4: Added one new button
XxContraryLambxX hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
IAm Fry I mean the outside of the controller.
Adding the sticks and they changed the triggers and the touch pad. Also larger. Sooo still false
IAm Fry Could you stop complaining? I wasn't trying to be exactly correct.
XxContraryLambxX can you stop being wrong lol. the Xbox controller you still have to buy something to make it work, witch is shitty for everyone
Well it's not rally the real evolution then, if you are showing the standard xbox one to the elite, you should be showing the original big control
ikr
Yeah, that is a pretty big oversight in my opinion. I mean I can look at other youtube videos to see the Fat xbox controller, but if you really want to do something like this I personally think you need to be a little more thorough and include everything.
+Travis Haviv he said something about it at the start
+ItsCrystal I know and I heard it, but the video still seems incomplete. Again, if you title something "Evolution of the Xbox Controler!" you really should include every iteration to show side by side. Perhaps my expectations were too high.
It's not a true evolution, yeah he "mentioned" it but that is it
Who else had an original. Xbox when it first came out.
GizmoOwl me
Classified The Nerd Lol
I still have mines but not when it came out
GizmoOwl I still have mine in mint condition (exept for the controllers. Don't ask...) and funny enough, I own the 2004 glitched model. GizmoOwl me
that wasn't the first Xbox controller. there was a bigger one shipped with the very first batches of Xbox.
+Patrick Carney which is the first thing I say about the controller
it seems like people dont listen to the video :D
He says that less than a minute into the video. Watch the video before you rush to correct him.
They really need to block the comment section until the user has watched the entire video for this very reason.
then stop calling it the original controller. You know it isn't, and for the sake of this video, I'm a mermaid.
To the 1% of people who read this I hope you have a good day!
Hello again!
Hi!
Turtle Hockey thx
its now 6%
Turtle Hockey ha ha funny
Thx :)
Xbox One elite controller is worth the $150. Anyone who owns one knows this.
that's stupid I can just look up the price online. oh wow I know how much it cost now! didn't even need to buy it !
+Pablo Romero he means it feels like it's worth $150. Things can be worth 150, but they may not feel like it. The Xbox One Elite controller definitely feels like $150.
i'd rather take the new xbox one s controller than the elite
Lol interesting.. Wast 150$ on just a controller, when I can buy a normal onw for 40$? Fuck off mate, thats bull shit.. -_-
+Dekota Rose one*
There's a problem with your Original Xbox controller. The model you used and the first one (or the duke) had slightly different layouts and shape of the controller, not just the size.
You forgot when the changed the 360 controller where you can twist the d-pad to make it 4-multi directional pad
Not all. Only some.
but its still a noteable change
Greenfear SSB Not really. It's just a twistable D-pad. It's not too different... but if you are going for each and every minor change, it's a worthy addition.
Yup He Did
And now there's the xbox one s controller. They finally have a normal headphone jack!!!
Yeah!!! :D 👌
Kaneki Ken yeh it's bout time PS4 had it since 2013
Kaneki Ken They had that with the xbox one controller
Family Gaming Nope. Only the *Xbox One S* controller has it. 👍
Some dude who is brave enough to comment Need me to send a pic?
you missed out the original xbox controller with the giant logo on the controller ;)
Elliott Kenny he said it was a knockoff
sportboy 47 ahh right
There's an even bigger one
Butter Finger ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Butter Finger can you not hear?
The original xbox DOES have wireless controllers. It just has a thing you plug in the xbox. Choose player 1,2,3,4 and turn on the controller. Then bam. No wires
4:31 "I prefer the 4way just cause that's normal"
Funny you put a game title in your comment
Michael Jack's son t
Aiden Beattie just cause
Does anyone remember the gigantic original xbox controller that was made for giants?
JogdenPR yes it disturbingly big
+Bunch of Scrubs also known as the "Duke."
Bunch of Scrubs, yeah, its called the Duke Controller. Xbox made the same controller with a few tweaks that would work for the Xbox One.
5:32 Yeah but every time I plug in my headphones it starts beeping and I don't know why...
Mc.Butter Lettuce you probably went to your audio and turned headset mic off I did that before and thought my mic broke lol
4:25 : They're not PS4 thumsticks dude... they're Dualshock original convexe thumbstick layouts.
Dual shock is the playstation controller. PS4 is a playstation and uses said controllers. It's the same thing
+Space Jam nope, the DS4 controllers were updated to feature concave sticks as opposed to the originals, which had convex sticks
TheTonVeron Thank you
Proulx Live
Np bby
shut the fuck up jk
can you do an evolution of PlayStation controller video
Yesss pls

no one wants to c dat
xboxisbestx that's coming from someone whose username literally says xbox is the best. 😂✋
MorelHumor and your point is?
Um... The Xbox 360 controllers middle button didn't look like that... Is the controller modified?
he doesnt have 360 he has only has xb one
dnomaid yes that's very true
You really need some subtle background music in your videos.
He does...
+Kringle Games that's the joke
Visit My Channel Please
BTW, 4:25 the PS3 had convey sticks, but the PS4 has concave sticks
Best controller ever!!
It is extremely ignorant to say that the elite controller is "definitely not worth it". It must be worth it to someone or it wouldn't have been sold out in stores 90% of its lifetime. Maybe it's not worth it to you but it's DEFINITELY worth it to a lot of people, including me.
KickassRaider97 bro get out your feelings like damn....
Cole x box one good console
No duke controller and s controller. That "original xbox controller" is a shitty third party
No shit Sherlock. He did tell us it was aftermarket.
Fιrε• Sταrτεr Yeah so this vid isn't really showing any evolution since it doesn't have the first or second controllers
The Xbox 360 Slim controller is different from the original. They even feel a little bit different.
and the Xbox Original had a small controller.
not by much it just made the material a bit more slick and the controller was mostly all black. and also that was the xbox original controller, just a revised version of it.
and then you have the xbox one s controller. same as normal one but bluethoot and 3.5mm jack.
I never have a problem
This is an amazing video!! It’s very interesting of how they transform over the years. Keep up the good work and keep making great videos like this. P.S. I subscribed!
WHERE IS THE DUKE???
I got a ps4 pro ad before this lmao.
Travis Anderson xD
NoiZEE - IO Games Xd😀

Anyone watching this in 2019?

Thank you!
+MS Tech yep no problem
+MS Tech sloppy vid
+Aaron Trujillo if got something negative to say keep quiet man
MicTiq Madison it wasn't a hate comment, he was saying it was a good video. Sloppy means good... Well, at least in the comment it did
It makes me feel really old seeing all of these controllers after not seeing them for years!!!
Why didn't you just get the legit ones for this review?
Where the hell is the best controller I have ever held in my life.... the FIRST xbox controller. If you weren't a child that controller was amazing!! It was so comfortable it hugged your hand!
Why do you look like Jake Short? xD
In my opinion, the Elite Controller with PS4 sticks, hair trigger and 4-way D-Pad is the best controller.
make love not console wars
i remember halo 1 and halo 2 on the og controller u would use the white and black button for switching grenades and turning on your flashlight in campaign and also remember the start button being on the side, the nostalgia
I have a Xbox one it's so cool
ah man i miss this video. good 2016 - 2018 memories.
The elite controller is very much worth it.
Xbox One X + an elite controller + a 4K TV + a couple of 4K games= TYE BEST TIME EVER. Xbox is the best
suh dude'
suhhhh dude
+MS Tech Can you please make a playstation controller video and nice vid btw
+MS Tech I still got one of those original controller
+Nora Sais agreed
+Remco Hogervorst
Same
The paddles on the back of the Elite controller are unnecessary for me because I use the claw method. I think I’m going to remove them permanently. I got the Gears of War set which has shorter paddles, but even then, they get in the way somewhat. Anyway, nice vid, Matt!
He's missing an Xbox controller
Christian Swan He has all xbox controllers...
FlammyCharizard no. He doesn't have the original one.
MnM yeah he does its the one with the wire
Aysia Carter
no the fat one. The very first xbox controller. He has the updated version
MnM i know that but that is still the first xbox controller
This is definitely an interesting topic, but it would be more entertaining if you included some backstory to each controller; the design choices, what influenced these decisions and how well each controller was received by the public.
Still Got The Xbox 360 💁🏻
Raquel Rivera yup, me too. got rrod tho :/
Got What?
Raquel Rivera red ring of death
That Guy LOL, I remember when I got mine, I was so fucking scared. But it still worked afterwards. Sorry for your loss.
Its Raquel Me too
Im pretty sure the slots in the back of the original xbox controller were for headsets
I think Xbox 360 is better then Xbox One xD
James Fattoruso that true because the Xbox 360 controller is smooth
James Fattoruso 2
360 controller breaks faster tho
Janet Sotelo umm she'll ive had mine for nearly 4 years and its in fine condition
Sandy Gamer fuck you
Sandy Gamer I've had the Xbox 360 E sience c 2013 and everything is in mint condition!
There were actually wireless controllers for the original xbox its just it wasnt built in but the controllers came with the recivers i have 2 of the controllers (with recivers)
Shit - > Good - > Great -> Overpriced
I don't know man. All the customization you can have on the Xbox One Elite makes things much more convenient and it looks comfortable. I'd rather pay for that than a SCUF
TheLaminator convenient? How? And comfortable? It's the basic XBone controller. Plus, if you want button mapping, get a PC.
TheLaminator if you're playing an FPS or RPG, you use a keyboard and mouse.
ChingBlingtheKing Yeah, I definitely agree on that, but this is just referring to console gaming only. We are not talking about PC gaming.
This brings me down memory lane
Same. The days when the original Xbox controllers were huge .
xbox orginal had a wireless controler came outabout a year after the orginal xbox and required a reciver you out in the system to actually work
4:01 why is it "most definitely not worth it"?
I want that that is so cool I didn't know they can make Xbox controllers.
For competitive play, unless you claw then the xbox elite controller is somewhat worth it, especially because a scuf with the same specs can cost around 200-230 dollars. And even if you claw its still a very good and better controller, if you want to pay for it.
They sell battery packs that are rechargeable for the controller
I have the forza 6 xbox and I absolutely adore the forza controller, the added grips are brilliant, it's so easy to use and it feels so nice
I like both 360 and Xbox one's controller! They both look nice
so... no mention of the multilayered button of the Original xbox controller? not many games used the function, but it had 2 levels of pressure detection for A B X and Y.
the first game coming to my mind using it was Metal Gear Solid 2:Substance

My dentist has the original xbox. I tried to use the controller and I was impressed of how far the xbox had come. LoL!
I remember getting the Xbox 360 when I was in like the um 1st grade which was like 6-7years ago I was so obsessed with it (I still have it to this day and it still works) I would play it a lot and now I got the Xbox one and Jesus Christ I do not leave my room for nothing. its really cool to see how much the Xbox has changed though
is there any difference between x1 controller and x1s controller?
Tekilka PL yes, one s has an headphone jack and grips, it's also connected via bluetooth
all i remember about the black and white button was the flash light in halo used it (whitch i really liked haveing a button on a controller for that)
thanks dude I was looking for a decent skin for my controller and my Xbox for a good price. and they now look great
I love my elite controller , got my paddles mapped to all my MINECRAFT AND ADVANCED WARFARE actions.
One of the slots on the OG controller was for a rumble pack.
They also need to update the Elite controller so that it works on bluetooth like the One S controller. Stupid as fuck to pay 150 for a controller to have to turn around and spend another 40-50 for a dongle to able to use with a PC.
The fact that this video exists without the very first controller is such a shame :/
you should have featured the original xbox duke controller
I love this video! I kept laughing when you rubbed your finger/s on the controllers whenever they had a special material on them, also I love that you prefer Xbox over PS4 controllers. The console doesn't matter it is style(UI) and comfort-ability with controllers.
the first ten seconds is all I needed
i vaguely remember having a 360 controller that had the black and white buttons, am i merging controlers, or was there a version for people who couldn't switch to the bumpers?
You're only showing one of the two Xbox classic controllers?
Please do the PlayStation controller evolution. I could also see this as a cool mini series, and you could also do companies like Nintendo and Sega. Just some food for thought
Given the size of my hands, the Duke is still my favorite controller of all time. It's nice to see it in this vide......oh, wait.
A LITTLE bit bigger! The original 'Duke' Xbox controller was the size of a medium-small land mammal.
You forgot the DUKE controller, sir.
On the elite controller, ps4 thumbsticks are not convex. Only the dualshock3 and below are convex.
I praise the Xbox one controller because of the battery placement as on Xbox 360 it has a massive block at the back
Silly Goose not now Dude xbox1 Has the batterys in it
The Xbox one controller is very durable. I’ve dropped on accident so many times and it’s still has no cracks and works perfectly fine. I have the gears of war 4 Xbox one S
the quality on this video is lit!! 1440p?!
OK for one if you were saying PS four for the thumb sticks you're wrong is the PS3 that had the convex ones
you left out a few... when this was posted the Xbox one had 4 types
1. 1.0- the one you showed
2. 2.0- the 3.5 jack one or the "HALO" one with bumper changes some with textured grips
3. The ELITE more or less the same as the 3.5 but better build
4. 3.0 or the Blu Tooth one
whatever I'm just pulling hairs lolz
happy 15th year Xbox!!
The Xbox One Elite controller is so worth it! Its just like a cheap mouse or a razer naga.
Pretty informative sum-it-up in a video!
i had a xbox 360 but i did not have that kind of one
this is my first time watching i subbed but the outro sounded a bit awkward xD
I'd highly recommend getting a used elite controller, they are amazing
You forgot the xbox 360 controller with the changing d-pad. Had slightly different analog sticks as well.
man I missed them back in the days (not really regular xbox) but my first consle ever was the xbox 360 when it was 2005 christmas
Do you even know how to solve that Rubik's cube at 4:57 ? Just wondering
I have a greenlight version of xbox original. Only 1300 total
Smfanqing Wu Me to

Sorry don´t mind me I´m just getting old.
I have a custom Xbox controller with the headphone jack and my name engraved in it. It's soooo nice!
I play The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion on Xbox 360 and when you can hotkey things or whatever it would be easier with the four way d pad because I keep trying to push right in between and it's not built for that I guess.
