Palestinian identity only emerged after the 1968 PLO charter. Before that they were just Arabs and it was good enough for them. They did not even call the land Palestine while under 400 years of Ottoman control. They have repeatedly rejected offers for statehood: - by the Peel Commission in 1938, the 1947 Partition offer by the UN, Total rejection after they lost the 1967 Six Day War, when there were no Israeli towns or villages in the disputed land; in 2000 by Clinton and Barak, In 2006 by Olmert. I agree that Britain's role in Palestine and the wider issues with Israel's expansion should be more prominent in British political discourse, without fear of being branded an 'anti-Semite'.
Pulling down statues and belly-aching on and on about slavery is not helpful to the conversation about how contemporary Britain comes to terms with its colonial past and to what extent (if at all) contemporary British people should be held accountable for the sins of their great, great grandfathers. What's actually helpful is to acknowledge the positive elements of British history too instead of fixating on the negative for, let's face it, an ulterior political agenda.

If possible, and if they want to live in a clountry that respect them, some of those young people should move to Ireland. Britain is a weird Police State when it comes to its history and the extremist politicians there cannot empathise with Palistinians. Ireland must be almost the only country in Europe supporting Palestine's rights properly and empathising with the people and sending support in medical aid and charity aid and allowing their rights be upheld in Ireland too.

Palestinian identity only emerged after the 1968 PLO charter. Before that they were just Arabs and it was good enough for them. They did not even call the land Palestine while under 400 years of Ottoman control. They have repeatedly rejected offers for statehood: - by the Peel Commission in 1938, the 1947 Partition offer by the UN, Total rejection after they lost the 1967 Six Day War, when there were no Israeli towns or villages in the disputed land; in 2000 by Clinton and Barak, In 2006 by Olmert. The reason they don't have a country is because they want Israel gone. All they do is whine and complain, as in this Channel 4 program. It's pathetic.

These were before Israel delcared independence in 1948, which lead to 5 Arab armies attacking the tiny Israeli contingent and Arabs creating their own refugee problem. It only appeared in their second charter (in 1968) that was drawn in Cairo under the leadership of Arafat, a reaction to the devastating disappointment of the 1967 Six-Day War. In this new Charter the local Arabs were first referred to as Palestinians who were committed to pushing out the Jews by violence.
