    There's a place in my hometown called Admiral's and they have the greasiest, shittiest food possible, but you can get something called the "junkpile" which is just a giant plate of food. MSG is a great example where something that is harmless is assumed to be harmful because restaurants felt compelled to say they don't have it. Clearly if they say they don't have it then it must be bad! Even if you don't know why it is supposed to be bad.

    I do get sick when I eat Chinese food even in tiny amounts, but I know I’ve got a stomach that reacts negatively to soy sauce, soybean oil, and peanut oil. 😂 I’ll still eat it though and it’s something I get made fun of for because I can eat super spicy food but put a little bit of the wrong kind of grease in my stomach and I’m dying. I did get food poisoning at one Chinese restaurant but, again, that’s one singular Chinese restaurant that I never went back to.
    There’s also this restaurant that literally offered to cook me separate chow mein and egg rolls in olive oil or regular vegetable oil and that’s the nicest thing ever. I said no but the fact they offered made my day. I like to go there because they’re super nice. I think they might have closed due to the pandemic which is sad.

      As a small kid, I used to have Chinese takeaways with my family almost every weekend, and after eating it, I would throw up every single time like clockwork. I still insisted on having it though, as I just loved it that much. Thankfully, I reached a point where I built a 'tolerance' to whatever it was about it that was making me ill and have been completely fine ever since- I'm pretty sure it was just the large amounts of grease/fried stuff, as I did have a bit more of a sensitive stomach to stuff like that as a kid- fish and chips could make me feel a little nauseous too.
      Still, it was seemingly only Chinese takeaways that fully did it to me, but I doubt it was anything like MSG, and more like not being as used to that style of cooking on a day to day basis and having a sensitive stomach (which I've always had)

    • @HyperWolf
      @HyperWolf 2 года назад +1

      @@Stathio yeah, I was also the same although we probably had Chinese food once every couple of months. Which is probably why I somehow built up a tolerance to grease in burgers and deep fried stuff but not fully to the Chinese food grease. That’s why we’ve assumed it might be the different type of oil they use since a friend once cooked Chinese food for us but used vegetable oil and minimal soy sauce and I was fine. MSG is definitely not the culprit since I’ve had non-Chinese food with MSG added in and nothing has happened. In terms of Chinese restaurants, I did gratefully stop throwing up after eating. Now it’s just intense stomach pain that makes me feel like I’m dying. If I just eat a small amount, tums can stop the worst of it though. Maybe one day I’ll tolerate it fully.

    Here is an easy way to make tomato sauce. Saute tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, and garlic, after they are roasted, deglaze with water and let the stock cook for 10 minutes, then put everything in a blender with enough of the stock to barely cover them (less if you want it thicker), add in salt, pepper, dried oregano, paprika, and MSG. Blend everything, taste for seasoning, and then use the sauce for anything you want. Do the experiment and taste the sauce before and after adding the MSG, you'll taste the difference immediately, that thing will make the tomatoes taste even more like tomatoes.

First time I was 14 and I expelled most into a toilet and passed out for a day. The second time was when I was living in a homeless shelter and needed a fun night for morale, ended up taking an edible with my drinks and that combo hit me hard. There was also that time where I only got tipsy and tripped while walking down the stairs with tuna salad... spilled most of it and ended up with a really sore back. I used to think MSG is probably not the healthiest thing, but I won't mind eating it (kinda like fat and salt isn't the healthiest but it makes food taste better).
    But that mostly stems from my mother being very much opposed to it (tho she always assumes anything chemical sounding in the ingredientlist is inherently unhealty (ascorbate? That can't be good for us!)
    This video pushed my a bit more towards the "eh who cares, it won't kill me and it tastes great" camp.

(I say this as I didn't go around polling people) it was absolutely delicious and authentic. best Chinese food ever. I went a few times by myself and was the only non Asian there. I just pointed to the menu and got some fantastic dishes. if anyone has visited Edinburgh recently let me know if it's still there.

    I had intolerance issues with MSG for about 10 years of my life. Eating foods with flavor enhancers like MSG and malted barley flour would give me major stomach cramps and headaches. However, I will openly admit that it was entirely psychological. When the symptoms first started I was going through a really stressful time, and coped with the stress by eating savory foods full of MSG.
    For some reason my body decided that the flavor enhancer ingredients were my real problem, and so would give me brutal reminders of this every time I ate something with it.
    I knew that I'd recover from the issue eventually, but it did take a long time. I learned that taking Taurine pills blocked the absorption of MSG in the small intestines, so I took those for a few years while I reintroduced MSG into my diet.
    I'm all good now and back to normal, but those years without the MSG did teach me some good lessons in food flavoring, like that pretty much the only chip/crisp flavor without artificial flavor enhancers is Salt and Vinegar, and that rosemary is freaking amazing!
