The Jurassic Coast has endured multiple tectonic events through it’s geological history. From being land locked in a super-continent to being caught up in the subsequent extensional and compressional tectonic phases, this talk aims to explain this complex structural evolution with reference to the topography we see today.
Thanks for this talk. I’m not a geologist but have had a life-long layman’s interest in Dorset rock formations (being a ‘local’!). You answered so many of the confusions and questions I’ve often considered whilst out and about in the County. From the Variscan basement to the W/E tilt and beyond. Much appreciated.

I’m in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. From where I sit, I suspect two trends are coinciding. First is a phase of maturity among professional geologists. Specifically what I mean is it seems that enormous amounts of work has been accomplished, and by its nature, the detail brought together by observation and interpretation is local or perhaps regional. Second is a curiosity among amateurs and enthusiasts. (This second point is purely a non-rigorous hunch based on incidental impressions.)
But. Supposing these ideas are accurate, we are entering a golden age in which masses of information are pulled together to tell major stories that are sought after by widening audiences. My appreciation for geology has blossomed in the pandemic years.

Geologists only think and talk about periods of millions of years. They have different methods for determining the age of rock layers. However, there is one small problem. Ancient books tell us that a cycle of natural disasters threatens the earth and all living things. The cause of this cycle of disasters is a ninth planet in our solar system orbiting the sun in an eccentric orbit. Features of the natural disaster include a massive tidal wave, higher than the highest mountain, flooding, storms, rain, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and a fiery asteroid bombardment. That planet is surrounded by a gigantic twisting cloud of dust and meteorites. That cloud obscures the atmosphere, pollutes the water and covers the whole planet Earth with that dust.
