  • Spencer Riley Alfonso of Riley and the Roxies lists his top 5 favorite plug-ins. Fresh off the release of his debut album Raw Honey (2019), the list goes into common effects and software emulated processors that were used on the album during the mixing and production phases.
    1. XLN Audio: Addictive Drums
XLN Audio created one of the most effective drum sampler engine and drum replacer in Addictive Drums and Addictive Trigger. They're currently on Addictive Drums 2, but I've been using their virtual software instrument since its first iteration.
    2. Universal Audio: Eventide Harmonizer
The Eventide Harmonizer modeled by Universal Audio's UAD-2 software is an excellent example of analog hardware emulated in such a way that the magic of analog shines through the digital framework. There's tons of features baked into the Harmonizer's original design, I use it as a doubler, guitar effects processor, and parallel drum processor.
    3. Universal Audio: Teletronix 2A
This is my favorite software compressor. The Teletronix LA-2A by Universal Audio gets used at the front end of my recording process via UAD's Console platform with record functionality enabled. This allows me to control the dynamics of the front end of my vocal chain, the end result is a really nice gluey texture that I adore. I use it in most vocal chains when I mix inside of my DAW.
    4. Universal Audio: Lexicon 224
This Lexicon 224 reverb is one of my favorite effects for modern sounding records. It has a great atmospheric tonality to it that I find perfect for vocals and electric guitars. It can also morph into an AMS-type gated reverb if need be, which could be useful for snare effects.
    5. Universal Audio: Cooper Time Cube
The Cooper Time Cube by Universal Audio is a classic delay effect that has a metallic/rubbery tone to it, I find it really useful for creating artificial stereo fields in support of a dry signal. It's the perfect match for an EMT 140 plate reverb. Together I find that they create a noir-ish effect on whatever signal is driving to them.
