  • “Electrify everything” has become the rallying cry against the climate crisis. The key? Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy and using technologies such as electric vehicles and smart grids. But did you know that copper plays an essential role in this process? 🛠️🔋
🔸 Copper: the nervous system of civilization. Ed Conway defines it as “the great invisible substrate that underpins the modern world.” From electric cars to wind farms, copper is indispensable for green technology.
📈 The rise in demand for copper. As we move towards a greener future, copper consumption is expected to double by 2035. For example, an electric car needs three times more copper than an internal combustion engine. 🚗⚡
🏗️ Copper shortage? Despite the new deposits, some experts fear a crisis in which demand for copper outstrips supply. New mines will be needed, but mining faces opposition because of its environmental and social impacts.
🌊 Is deep-sea mining the solution? Exploiting polymetallic nodules on the seabed could be an alternative, but it also poses major ecological challenges.
