  • These homeowners are indeed landscape designers, and plant people. Annette Shrader takes us through the gate to find a densely planted backyard retreat that will have one thinking there are no neighbors. The reality is that there are neighbors on all sides. A great selection of trees, shrubs and perennials accent the ponds and sitting spots. Themed garden areas make a visitor feel as if they are a world away from the busy city when in fact it is just minutes from the urban core. To WATCH full episodes, visit www.volunteergardener.org

I would have never thought that this was a 1/4 of an acre.

    Omg beautiful.
I tried to do the same. I planted all around for privacy.
I have 4 koi ponds. I love to relax there. My wife and I now garden together.
    Great video.

I'm utterly amazed at the size of this garden, it looks huge. Thanks for having us.

@wende- that is exactly my thought! It looks well over 1 acre. Not sure if it is the density or the height of the trees or a combination of all.

Could be an illusion, a combination of both. Or, it's just 1 ginormous garden.

Love hostas- have 30 different varieties but have too many rabbits and deer who ravish them. Just saw a rabbit 5 minutes ago nibbling on my forsythia cutting 🤦‍♂️.
Especially fascinated by the understory mid height plantings in this garden ... lovely garden.
What do you plant for privacy and density in the understory?

Karl Senula try Milorganite ... keeps the deer away and it’s good “food” for Hosta.
