I'm using Vital version 1.5.5 which you can get for free (full-featured) from vital.audio/#g...
If you enjoy the software, consider upgrading to support the developer and get additional content.

I feel like, not only are you giving a master class on synth here, but also just on how sound works. This stuff is fantastic, Eric.
If you don't mind me asking, how/where did you learn all of this about sound design? Experimentation? School? I'm getting into a lot of this for fun and to help teach one of my boys who's super into music creation etc, so I'm always looking for good learning resources. Thanks again!
@@-adc I learned mostly from experimentation and RUclips. I'm hoping to make an introductory course on sound design using Vital sometime soon, since I wished something like that was available for me when I was figuring this out.
Dude, where have you been all my life? 😂 You are literally the only person on RUclips who manages to emulate acoustic instruments using a synthesizer. I have been looking for tutorials like this for years and got really frustrated with all the sound designers with their flashy titles who drag you through hours of tutorials only to let you end up with very banal, plasticky, thirteen-a-dozen patches.
Thank you 🙏🏻
I've been obsessed with synthesizing dulcimers for so long and this really helped me tons! thanks so much
Got further than real sound. Very cool.
This channel is pure gold
I appreciate your knowledge of sound synthesis, thanks for sharing 🙌
your sound design skills are great, you should have a lot more subs tbh
also thanks!!
Great sounding patch, very good attention to detail. The world needs more people like you. Thank you!
I'm busy with hardware synths for now, but will definitely consider buying your Vital presets in the future.
Now in the DAW you can modulate the macros with automation clips, so for example you can manipulate the ups and downs of the detune, velocity range, and mute.
I like how the number of the sounds in the pack keeps getting bigger and bigger haha!
Yeah maybe it's time for volume 2 haha
Thanks so much for going in-depth in these tutorials! Explaining WHY you're doing what you're doing is so helpful and fascinating. Just bought your preset pack and it's fantastic.
Well Done 👏
Very very good
You are absolutely amazing sir thank you!
Such great sounds!! Great job!!
Sweet, time to make some medieval type beats 😈
Absolutely INSANE!! I find myself thinking that these are real instruments. You are SO GOOD at making these!! How long have you been synthesizing sounds???
Thanks! I dabbled for a long time but got serious about learning about 2 years ago.
Because of this tutorial, I don't need to think about buying any dulcimer libraries or VSTs. Maybe you could also do tutorials for some other string instruments like acoustic guitars (the free options I found are unsatisfying or don't work on some DAWs), electric guitars (the dry sounds, to be precise), mandolins, banjos, sitars, or something. Overall, nice sound.
Hey I just thought I could share one tip: if you alt+click on any parameter, you can straight go to inputting the value you want. (You probably knew this, but just in case...)
Thanks for the tip!
Superbe ! Thank you so much
Does the Velocity modifier here work with the velocity parameter in FL Studio, or does that require the velocity tracking knob over that?
Honestly, amazing!
Your sound design is fantastic and you also know how to keep the tutorials clear. Excellent. There's months of learning on this channel. Subd.
Just one question. I don't have "point cycle" under my LFO modes (used for the 2 handed play mod at 15:05 in the video). I see all the other modes. But that one seems to be missing. I have the latest version installed. I couldn't think of another easy way to modulate the flip between the mod states on each note. Do you know how to get that mode to display or what other trick I could use to simulate the mod on/off behavior on every other note? THANKS
Thanks for the kind words! When you click "Trigger" on an LFO, what options do you see? For me "Point Cycle" is the last option, right after "Loop Hold". I'm on version 1.5.5, but it should be in the non early-access version as well.
@@EricBowman And thank you for checking! After you confirmation I double checked my installed plugs and while I had 1.55 installed I somehow was still using 1.08 in my DAW. Mistery solved! It's there now. I can imagine some really cool other possibilities with the point cycle trigger too. Thanks again!
omg dude thankkkkk you!!
Uhm...
I followed along and attempted to do the subtlety with LFO 2 and... It appears Point Cycle doesn't exist????
do you have a favorite comb filter or other method for piano strings?
Been trying to make one based on advice from someone else, but I am stuck:
Trying to make a Synth Shamisen. I can't seem to get the right timbre, and it's driving me nutty
This is amazing thank you!!!
Can you make a marxophone sound?
Like in "The Doors - Alabama Song".
Also, is it possible to to buy the sounds pack with PayPal?
Thanks! I had never heard of a marxophone but it sounds a lot like the dulcimer preset. You could use an arpeggiator and automate the velocity range macro to mimic the bouncing. I just added the option for Paypal. You'll see the option for payment method after clicking "buy this"
@@EricBowman ok thank you i'll buy it then
The tutorial for Dulcimer was great but for Charango, it was kinda unclear like the other mods and stuff. Can we get a full tutorial on that?
youre a G
Is it possible to create a clean acoustic/electric guitar sound using this method? I'm trying but it still sounds "plastic".
I can not connect Env3 to the Stereo control button at the bottom right for some reason. It doesn't let me. Did this get patched out or changed? I'm on the free version.
I connected Macro1 to control the SMP fine pitch and (global) Spread instead. Now that I'm thinking about it, you made it mono by turning that spread down. Perhaps I should use a little frozen chorus or phaser instead.
It seems to sound alright for a 98% copy, but I'd still like to know why I couldn't.
You'll want to make sure you drag the stereo control to filter 1 cutoff. Then you can drag an envelope to that modulation.
If the UI is preventing you for some reason, you can go to the "Matrix" tab, see what number modulation is stereo -> filter 1 cutoff, then assign an envelope to modulate modulation x amount.
The effect of assigning the stereo modulator to the filter cutoff and giving it a very small amount is slight detuning between the left and right channels. Then when we make it mono, it sounds like a two-string course where the strings are slightly out of tune with one another.
I hope that helps!
@@EricBowman Thanks for your reply!
I think I got it, I set the cut-off modulation to 0.29. I don't think you mentioned that amount, except for "little" and I so went on taste.
I think what got me confused is that I was following along and you didn't do the described procedure because you had already set up the "slot" for stereo?
I really wish the charango part was more in-depth as I'm not familiar enough with the theory and the synth yet. The settings for many of these sounds are so precise, if you don't follow it a 100% its not going to be the same, logically, with exception of the "to taste" settings.
I watched your video on harmonics last night, but I'll have to watch it again as it was a bit much to take in all at once. Even when I start to get it, it will take me a long while to get near your level in practice. I think practice is the key word there...
Thanks for everything you do! I love these video's and I'm having a blast following along!
Hi Erik, i just downloaded the presets. Most of them are very usable and very good. I encounter a problem with some of them, i think it is because of my setup. I use linux Manjaro and the vital synth is an AppImage, so just a 1 file run program.
When i open --Modern Super Saw2 everything is OK, But if i open --Modern Super Saw vital crashes. Not a big deal on this preset, but as an example. Maybe can you tell me the main difference between the two so i can find out what the problem is with my setup. Thank you for your effort. Jean
Are you using Vital version 1.5 or greater?
@@EricBowman Hi Eric, i can not see the version number. I have noticed now that when i hit the advanced tab in the stand alone Vital Appimage, vital crashes no matter which preset i load, BUT, when i load vital in my DAW Ardour as a VST, everything works fine. Sometimes i use the standalone version to quickly try to follow a good video like this one, but most of the times i use it in the DAW. So problem solved. I am still looking for a good cello or fiddle preset, maybe it is too hard to make? Thanks anyway. Jean
@@germona You might have a different version installed for standalone. That sometimes happens when people upgrade to a new version but don't replace the vst files for their DAW. You can see the version number by clicking the "V" logo in the upper left of Vital.
Realistic solo cello or fiddle is pretty hard to synthesize from scratch, but group strings is a little easier since a lot of the detail gets lost in the group sound. I have a preset for that on my vol. 2 pack. The volume 2 pack was made to work on all versions of Vital :)
You can get pretty close to a bowed string instrument using Karplus-Strong String Synthesis but sustaining the note instead of the decay I use here. Best of luck and thanks for the support!
@@EricBowman Ok Eric i found the version numbers, they look the same 1.5.5, so there must be something wrong with the appimage.
I'm kind of lost, I want to make the charango but I believe your missing some details such as changes to the other envelopes, adding another env, and other minor changes.
There might be some changes I missed, especially subtle changes to envelope lengths or shapes. If there's an extra env, I probably wanted a a slightly different timing for a couple modulations that were formerly the same timing.
I would encourage you to use your ear and dial in those envelopes to taste. I might prefer it slightly differently. I'll usually change those envelopes according to the vibe of the track anyway. Sometimes you want something really long and sustained and sometimes you want something sharp and plucky.
@@EricBowman
Thank you so much, especially for sharing how to make these presets for free. I’ve literally gotten into sound design just about a week ago and it’s a lot for my head to handle lmao.
So does that mean I can link new envelopes to anything providing cutoff, volume, and…what else? (for future reference)
@@DaBubblyBinkus No problem! Yeah, envelopes can modulate pretty much anything. You may find my “how create any sound” series helpful. In episode 1 I talk about how to use envelopes
‘K thanks, bruv.
when you hold shift to make it bipolar what it does exactly?
It modulates the parameter from 50% below the value to 50% above the value, rather than 100% above the value
@@EricBowman thx Eric you are the best
Восхітітєльно!!!!
Is there some deep fat guitar basses in that pack?)
Like a bass guitar? There's a funk bass called Purple Disco Bass and several synth basses. You can hear them here: ruclips.net/video/RdP2nVIQLh4/видео.html
Can you make the lead from ddu du ddu du by blackpink
Thanks for the suggestion! It's a nice sound and I got pretty close. I made a tutorial for it here: ruclips.net/video/0CnW72b4-cg/видео.html
In this preset there are a lot of modulations, so this preset requires so many modulations in order to sound realistic.
No one: Vital kills Spitfire Audio LABS
Spitfire Labs is a great option and I encourage you to use it if it fits your needs. However, there are benefits to using Vital. Since it's a synthesizer, you get 127 velocity layers. Most sample libraries have fewer than 10. That might mean notes "jump" out when you cross a velocity threshold. Unlike Labs, you also get a very responsive muting macro in this preset. But most importantly, you can edit this sound however you want, which is much more flexible than adding effects in post for a sample.
@@EricBowman Yeah, it is usually possible to emulate acoustic instruments in a synthesizer.
@@EricBowman And this presets requires no oscillator as all, it just requires white noise.
You started off saying "initialize" but it clearly shows that you did something with LFO 1 that did not getexplained. I'm trying to follow along... but it's a losing battle... smh
How did everyone else miss that??? 🤷🏽♂️
They certainly aren't following along as you go. I wish I knew what that step was. I can't get mine to sound like yours... 🤷🏽♂️
@@EBSMuzik Fear not! That is from my default preset and isn't used at all in this preset. That's just vibrato for the mod wheel which I never use in the video.
