  • The executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Terry Davis has been with Home Hardware for 42 years. Now he's returning to his roots working in the warehouse and making his own improvements. But will the disguised worker walk off the job after a sweaty shift of hauling drywall?

      She said she feels special that she got $6000, for her 6 grandchilren, and her husand feels humble. No mention of her effort going to work through her cancer treatments. He should have at least given them a vacation together to somewhere excotic. Pizza Pizza did more their employees, he bought one a car. What a shame Home Hardware!

    I have to say...the comments regarding gifts being small...the company is under no obligation to give the employees anything. The employees all said with great emotion, how special the gifts made them feel, recognized. In my opinion, I think that is what matters. The gifts were thoughtful and the boss also recognized changes that will be made to make their jobs easier. How many of us would be grateful just for that? 😊

      And people seem to forget that this is scripted reality and it's been uncovered years ago that the big gifts other companies promise don't make it to the employees most of the time. This is all just for show.

    I have worked in the construction industry for over 20 years, and I honestly believe that stocking drywall in new construction is one of the most laborious jobs in the industry. I have always had a lot of respect for those guys. I have moved a little bit of drywall in my time and I couldn't imagine doing it all day,every day! #RESPECT

      Being in the trades, I've moved my share of drywall enough to know it is very demanding on the body and equally dangerous getting hurt. They could make moving easier using the plastic panel handles that sell for under $10 and realize that there are simple ways to carry while using one arm around the front, as though carrying timber. This helps allowing the freehand to open doors and maneuver around corners etc...

      I've done alot of work in construction thousands of houses. Drywall is heavy but have you heard of concrete? 80 pd bags of death . Also 60 pd bundles of shingles up ladders is painful too. Drywall is third I think.

      started framing when i was13 ill be 57 this july other than 6 years in the army and a few years doing commercial fishing I've done construction my whole life still doing remodels with my middle son and his wife. moved hung and finished so much sheetrock i can honestly say yes that humping sheet rock and lugging bundles of shingles up a ladder are both seriously hard jobs

    Promotions and raises are needed to show appreciation for their work, as well as the gifts.
    If you see one struggle in life, then see all workers who struggle.
    Increase wages will make happy employees.

    At the last company I worked for my boss told me that the board in America had decided to recognise and reward a small number of employees. I think it was suppossed to have been kept quiet until it happened but word got out that this special award was coming. What we actually got was a cheap engraved pen - it was engraved with the company name, apparently it was too expensive to have them done individually. It felt more like a kick in the nuts than a reward for going the extra mile. It was shortly after one of the vp's had paid 6 million dollars for a house in the bay area of California. I think Terry was pretty generous here and it was clear he had gone along way to find things special to each person - that means a lot more than just signing a cheque in my opinion.

      Yeah. This company I just left, got really big with new contracts.
      They gave us Merry Christmas cards. For Christmas.
      No pay raises, and a huge list of to do's before March for the performance review to get the $2-3% increase. I threw in my two week notice and left a week early. 👍
      This other company gave me 4 dollar raise with as drawn out place for me to become a supervisor. Is training me in the bay area for two weeks, paid for food, lodging etc. And the medical is better and cheaper...

      The show is scripted reality. It's not a secret most gifts never reach the employees and are only there to make the company look good in the show.

    These Canadian undercover bosses are the cheapest ones of any country I have seen. They are getting so boring and the bosses are not giving nearly enough for the hard work they do.

      Agree - with this exercise the company gains an honest insight into how to improve productivity and therefore profitability. Therefore the 'bonus' should reflect the impact that the improvement identified by the employee has on the bottom line.

      I totally agree, how stingy can they get, if it was a British undercover boss, they would get nothing and the bosses would be complaining that they should of used their lunchtime to make more money or keep working for the company. They see lunchtime as lazy time

    I've been watching episodes of Undercover Boss from America, Canada and Australia...and without a doubt, this one put the biggest smile on my face. What an absolutely fabulous group of hard working and genuinely wonderful people, who all appear to deserve enormous respect and every success and happiness in life! Cheers from Oz.

    One of my biggest pet peeves about retail stores is when I'm standing there with money to spend and they make me wait while they take a phone call from an only prospective customer!

      The people on the phone are customers too If the call came in before you walked over then yeah, you wait until the call is finished.

      As someone who's been on sides of that scenario (customer and worker), it really depends on the company. If there's a manager or supervisor present, they'll jump down my throat if I don't pick up the phone regardless of the line - I could lose my job over that. Some places I was the sole employee on shift... never picked up the phone LOL

    I worked for a local lumber yard and carried sheetrock and the boss always told us employees to put the sheetrock where the customers wanted it, either up stairs or down stairs, it was very difficult at times but he ALWAYS had repeat customers for doing that!

    When they was lifting the insulation there's a number of things that could be changed, 1) two man lifting as its far too heavy for one person to continue to lift that weight. 2) the safety railing can become a safety gate that allows it to open and then the employees can push if off instead of lifting over railing and risking an injury. even better a surface hydraulic ramp so the product isn't being thrown down as anybody could walk below and risk it hitting them.

      Can confirm that, I was working at Lowes in my hometown and we had a young employee be forced to carry insulation to storage on his own, our supervisor refused to let anyone help him, the young employee tripped on a pallet and the insulation fell on his chest and cracked 3 ribs. He sued the store as a result of his injury. After I quit working with them, a new regulation was put in requiring a lift to move insulation.

      Invest money in continuous improvement or spend it on continuous lawsuits and Workman's Compensation claims. There's always room for improvement when you understand that things can always be improved upon. That entire railing system could be converted to a horizontal sliding gate that doubles back on itself. You wouldn't lose any storage space. A hydraulic lift platform could be attached to the walkway to also prevent damage to the product and injury to the worker. Or, use an overhead crane with a handheld controller; they're definitely not using the space on the ceiling for storage...

    I'm a contractor. You might want to TRY to be competitive with those American stores. I would rather buy from a Canadian company, but not at the inflated prices of HH.
    My bottom line means something to me. You compete, you get my business.

    As someone who did inventory counts for Acklands Grainger, Home Depot, BC Liquor Board, Walmart etc for 10 years it baffles me that Home Hardware doesn't use a simple program that keeps track of all incoming and outgoing inventory along with their bay locations. As long as the employees update the system when product is moved, all someone else has to do is scan a barcode and the inventory program will list all locations that product is in.

      This is a manufacturing facility, not a retail store. They’re manufacturing product, so there’s no way to know how much has been produced except to count it

    All of y’all are talking about how cheap this boss is being. It seems to me that he is a very caring person who took time to do something very personal for each employee. Airfare isn’t cheap esp for a band with all their gear.. and recording studio time is very costly. He did something amazing for all of the employees. That is pretty special in my book.

      For those that think Home Hardware was so generous you should watch other undercover boss shows. To give a lousy 1000 bucks to each grandchild for their education is absolutely nothing. The woman is dying and that's what he thinks would be a great gift. If that isn't bad then think about the fact it was fod both of them. The other guy got his whole band sent to do a recording. SMH on what is fair. Just another cheap boss. They shouldn't have told him their ideas and just let the store lose business. I have liked to buy home hardware stuff because they are canadian...but now that I see that a few thousand is all they can do for their very hardworking employees I have changed my mind and will go to home depot if I need something

    A friend of my dads owns a HomeHardware and its 100% like this in his store. And trust me its not usually the guy stocking the shelves that put shot in the wrong spot its the customers just toss the parts they grab by accident in the wrong place.

    I watch this show for the workers, in my years of employment I have worked for temp agencies they used to send me to new places every few days, I met these people who are so committed to their jobs, it is people like these who make these places not the bosses,, For 10 bad apples there is always 1 Amazing human who has so much to offer to new people like me on there 1st day.

    Company executive moving drywall at 60yrs old! He is lucky he didn't end up in hospital!
    I have been a builder in upstate NY for over 30years I would love to have one of his stores nearby because Home Cheepo and Lowers took over my area and they plain suck. Ultimately they , I believe, have raised construction costs 30%+ while simultaneously reducing the quality to a 5 year life expectancy

    I live near a Home Hardware store and the staff are fantastic. They take you to the part/item you need. The people will tell you how to fix things and pick out the parts you need. I find even though the store is smaller it has a better selection than some of those huge big box stores. Prices are competitive. If they don't have it they will tell you where you can get it. Just a nice friendly place to shop in.

    The Mary something Canadian boss has baught a house for an employee and paid full university education for 2 kids of another employee etc. Not all Canadian bosses are cheap, but most are.

    I literally have the gifts he gave them in my back pocket. He bragged about being a 4 Billion dollar corporation but only covered Dillan's rent and a baseball training camp. They literally focused on Safety, Ownership, Accuracy, Productivity, Efficiency, and effective on-boarding techniques. The basics of a forward thinking corporation. Their ideas alone will save the corporation 10's of thousands of dollars.

    I hope the company is scanning these comments. Sean Homar has great ideas below. Having such a gate swing out would maximize upper tier storage and even allow a little cherry picking from a lift truck bucket.

    This boss was nice but really missed the mark on the rewards. Wonder if the employee benefits are as skimpy as what he gave them. The woman comes to work during cancer treatment and he manages $6000 for her grandkids? For someone who started at the bottom he has forgotten what that is like.

    Common now. I'm a 5'1 woman that can load drywall. Was the manager of a local rural hardware store for 13 years. When you're more interested in your customer than yourself, you'll get the job done. Point blank.

    This is where he has to think differently about customers…they’re not his, they choose to buy from their store if it’s worth their time and money. This is why competition is best, let the best store win. Later on…it looks like Amazon for construction.
    This company doesn’t have a way for employees, if the manager cannot tell the company officers what improvements must be made, to make sugestions on improvements that can help with productivity?
    The workers don’t expect much, even if it were nice to get…but if the company doesn’t have the funds, it can’t be more generous. All of you who complain the boss doesn’t give enough, have to remember the company has to diversify the revenue or the govt will take way more and the govt is not known to be savvy with our tax money (the same in the US). How would anyone like it if there was no company to work for and all of us have to apply for the govt to get a job - that’s what would happen if the companies go under due to overtaxation.

    I watched a lot of episode of undercoverboss,
    and for me no one can beat to what modell's done for their employees, and this episode is the most stingy boss I watched
    I no longer wonder why it only has 280k views, because the boss who can be seen in this episode is stingy

    Having been a waiter in restaurants across the US where standard salary was $2.13 per hour (plus we had to pay for health insurance), tips from customers were the primary foundation of our income. Add that up and try to pay rent for something other than a cardboard refrigerator box you dug out of a dumpster. Waiters across the US had (and still have) an ongoing joke: "What's the difference in a Canadian and a canoe? Well, a canoe tips". Hot tip, Canadians, when we hear you say 'a boat' instead of 'about', beware. You may have your lemons licked, your dessert spoon swiped underneath somebody's armpit, and your credit card swiped up an asscrack. As the saying goes, when in Rome ... Make it your business to learn local customs, the US is not Timbuktu, it's your next door neighbor and you should know these things.. This guy was just flat out cheap and out of touch. He gave a lady a Blue Jays tee-shirt and promised her a baseball game. Gave another a recording studio session to record "a" song. And then there was the whopping $1000 education fund for six grandchildren. What world is he living in that he thinks $1000 is going to make a dent? I'd say he did himself more damage with his "cheap treats" than if he'd not done the show at all in the first place. Giving staff the appropriate equipment to do their job in your company should not be considered a gift -- it is your RESPONSIBILITY, so don't brag about a handheld scanner. Jeez. I'd boycott this chain just for his nonsense if nothing else. He's apparently retired now and that can only be a good thing for this company. Not sure how long he'll last, considering his obesity. The company should have in-house gyms and promote healthy lifestyles. I'm all for supporting the small business, but this $4.8BILLION business needs to be better than tossing peanuts at their best staff.

    My god, what a difference between Undercover Boss US and Undercover Boss Canada.
    In the US, people struggling to make rent, living paycheck to paycheck.
    In Canada, she had 100+ acres.
    In the US people who work like 60 hours struggle to go on Vacation,
    In Canada, that couple had just come back from Florida, at the time when she was undergoing chemo. In the US, their grand-grandchildren would have still to pay for those bills.

    The one reason I do not go to Home Hardware, is that they advertize for items, they do not even have in stock. In fact, it took them over 5 months to get in the advertizing of a solar lamp. Someone is not giving these folks enough information as what customers want, when they want it. I go Home Depot, Lowes or Rona over Home Hardware. These other stores have workshops on how to do things since you can never get handimen and they do not like working for single women. Over 20 months ago, I built a 10 foot by 10 foot shed for using as a craft place, as my home is only 24 feet by 24 feet war time home with no basement. I want and need an electrician to get electricity for my sewing machine, heat it also since i insulated it.

      Home Hardware has excellent benefits, and it was her choice to work because she wanted to. She knew she had a great job and was able to work with her husband. She needed nothing because she had what she needed. So by getting the 6k for an education fund, she could put the money into a high interest grow R.E.S.P.

    How about having a HAND HELD scanner on a nice lanyard to your wrist, so that you could scan the UPC on a plumbing item, then scan the UPC that is on the label/marker/price tag that is in the front of every bin, if the scanner shows a GREEN/GO light then that is a correct match & you KNOW that is the proper BIN for said item to be placed into, a RED/NOGO signal means you need to keep looking until you DO find the correct bin. That type of system would make EVERYONE'S life a bit easier AND go a long way to help people from getting home with the wrong items, at least those STUPID enough to ""ONLY MEASURE ONCE BEFORE CUTTING"" or in other words, NOT making sure that what they picked up was the correct item they WANTED/NEEDED, just because the lil sign said so!!!

      It's well reported that most of the appreciation-gift that are promised at the end never make it anywhere near the people.
      But this is one of the few episodes where every worker contacted by journalists reported that they got exactly what they were promised.

      Each store is ran by independent owner/dealer. These employees bosses are at the stores they work at. The company as a whole treats all employees well. The company wants to keep the small town feel to their stores.

    not sure why they loaded the drywall that way... One of my main tasks at the building supply store I work at is building drywall orders and, having carried drywall many times myself, I always load the trucks so that the first thing coming off of the truck is the heaviest, and the last thing coming off is the lightest. That way, as you get more tired from the work, the load gets lighter to accommodate that

      @@notexpatjoe While I get what you're saying, in my years of experience the sorting is pretty easy to do on site. While yes, if there are multiple floors involved those should be built and loaded separately, it's fairly easy to say "okay, we need 32 12 footers in the living room, and 12 in the kitchen, all the 8 footers go in the bedroom on the left. " But the heaviest sheets and the worst travel paths should be offloaded first. So always the 12 footers carried first, and if you have to go up or down stairs, that gets done first. That way, by the time you are exhausted and onto the main floor 8 footers, it barely feels like you're carrying anything at all. My coworkers would have my head if I loaded their trucks the way that one is loaded lol

But that's not what my point is. My point is still that whoever built the load did a terrible job doing it. You can still sort the load at the warehouse room by room with the heaviest stuff coming off the truck first. That's what I'm trying to say.

    People complaining about his gifts...how ungrateful. He didn't have to do anything about any of it.
    People like to look a gift horse in the mouth.
    I'm sure he did what he could. Maybe because of the company structure he doesn't make as much as a typical COO does. The operators are the owners and keep the profits so he doesn't make a huge sum of money. It isn't like the CEO of McDonald's that gets franchising fees.
    This guy doesn't get any of that and People judge him based on the size of his gifts, it's really sad to see what this world comes to when even after you help people, it isn't enough.
    You all sit there and judge this guy because YOU don't feel like he gave them enough when I saw every single person was grateful for what he did for them and you are trying to be outraged on their behalf...it's just virtue signaling at its finest.
    That is all I gotta say. This comment section disappoints me for humanity.

      People here are not judging -- we want the best for these mostly older, deeply hardworking everymen with incredible attitudes and gratitude who have donated years to a multi-billion dollar company that has over a thousand stores. And, this is a massive, national TV show also with ad revenue whose goal is literally to highligh employees. The employees that do well on the show and don't even know they are going to be on TV deserve deeper-pocketed appreciation, not $6000 or a t-shirt and a car ride to a training camp for the day. This show is also an opportunity for future employees to feel that these are companies they may want to contribute to one day. And finally, the Undercover franchise builds itself up for the last 5 minutes -- this is why people stay and watch the whole hour, to see how employees are treated, thanked, or sacked. He could have definitely done better, maybe focused on fewer emplyees so he could give them more.
      The rent coverage was wonderful, I will agree wholeheartedly.
