Only reasons I've been told to remove the bark is that leaving it on makes the wood decay faster and makes joins less secure. Great sized chicken run - hope you put a wire skirt on your fence to stop foxes digging under. Good on you for encouraging people to have a go.
That sounds fair enough. Be interesting to see how long they last. At least they were free! Foxes aren’t a huge issue for us because our blue healers fire up whenever even an echidna comes shuffling around. But to be extra sure I’ll be running a single wire electric fence line around the perimeter at fox nose height! In the past I’ve preferred to do that rather than bury the mesh as I’ve found the mesh rusts out over time.
Great video once again! When you have a sec. Check out a chainsaw stump vice. They cost about $15 and they secure your chainsaw while sharpening, which allows you to get a more accurate tooth angle on your filing.
As someone who's super keen on starting homesteading as soon as can after I finish uni and can go back rural again, this brought me a lot of comfort. The cost aspect scares me, but I think I've developed a bit of a victim/passive mindset about it so I like what you said about changing that and going from there. Great video again Side note: as a physio student, all the best with your recovery too! If they've told you that you can put full weight through it I probably wouldn't worry about doing any damage with normal movement. Maybe just watch out for rocks for a bit 😉
built my coup out of treated wooden posts but did use a lot of 2nd hand corrugated iron, then bought some pipe and wire mesh to weld up a basic door for the coup.
If you want rough cut lumber, you have a chainsaw, and half way handy ,please look at building an chainsaw mill.. Can be build cheaply , and will give you dimensional lumber for building
I have to point out that in buying your property you have still paid for your timber in the chicken yard. Good on you for acknowledging that you don’t need to buy extra though!! Sometimes it’s just hard to get to the homestead location that you want, and life has you trapped in a city where you can’t do much, or even the weather is against you. It’s finally cooling off so I might be able to plant my garden (I like the cold weather vegetable) and enjoy our mild southern winter (feels like summer where I’m from-AK-50-75f) with only occasional overnight freezes. Carrots and broccoli and cabbage here I come!!
Yeah, I suppose you're right. Truth is though when we bought the property 8 years ago I definitely didn't see it for the wealth of resources it really was - I was just looking at it for the pure acreage. Weather has been weird this year, plus we're getting used to a new climate. We moved from sub-tropical to temperate/semi-arid so I'm really hoping I can grow a full veggie garden here. Good luck with yours!
Best not to file back and forth with the chain sharpener. This will file the metal down. Fix the bar in place, get the angle correct with the guides or by sight and start stroking each tooth to get them right.
@@throughjordanseyes4024 haha I was waiting for someone to pick me up on that. Fair call. Really need to do it in a vice hey. Any tips for sharpening out in the field?
Where’s your Ferrari 😂 How silly! We are just reinforcing our chicken pen at the moment. Building materials actually costs a lot of money. We both work full time but hopefully not forever! We try to make use of whatever we can as well. I hope your foot heals well!
I think it is a waste to cut down all the timber and burn it or dispose of it when you can make so much out of it my dad's sheds fences were all we needed out of the timber that was already growing on the property also there is a portable milling machine that you can get and make the same bords that you buy out of your own trees so you never need to buy planks of wood for furniture, flooring, walls whatever you need to make whatever you need
Sorry that you copped negative comments 😢. We didn't have a lot of money and found a lot of cheap building materials at the local tip shop. All the very best with your endeavors.

Dad used take the bark off just the bit that would go in the ground, and dip that bit in old sump oil to discourage the bugs.
@@reganperry Did you see @frumbert's comment? I'm going to keep that in mind for experimentation.

@@181drake thanks! Oh that’s awesome, hadn’t heard of them. That’ll make me WAY more accurate! 😁
Necessity is the mother of all invention.
Think of your end game, then think how to accomplish that with what I have. Well done!
True!

Thats awesome! Yeah there's some big costs initially, but it's SO worth it. And thanks for the insider advice - definitely set my mind at ease.
Thank you for the motivation. Keep on keeping on! Guv

So good - great video
Thanks mate!
You’ve made some great videos but this one is the one I’ve connected with the most. Keep ‘em coming mate!
@@richardoakroot1871thanks!. Will do! Was always worried that I waffled a bit too much 😂
clearly you have an underground bat cave where you keep all your supercars

Mate, taie a bit more care when you sharpen your chain. Slower movements and only in the away direction. Keep file as horizontal as possible.👍
