  • It's a spicy one! You tell me! I will say I am a little bias, because the match after this one ended with this guy telling our team to "Sit the F*** down and Shut the F*** up" when I told him he wasn't allowed to give free timeouts to his 3-speed!! xD LOL. Gotta love this stuff... Enjoy this APA League Night 8-ball match guys!

    I like what you said about "he's playing another game" - that's exactly what those sharking tactics are about. Whether he knows it or not, the things he's doing are negatively affecting his opponent's play. After 9 years in the league, you should absolutely be aware of things as simple as standing close to the table while your opponent is shooting, approaching the table during their shot, moving around in their sight line (within reason), GRABBING YOUR CHALK OFF THE TABLE WHILE THEY'RE SHOOTING. At a certain point, we can't give someone like that the benefit of the doubt. There's certainly room to address it with them during the match, but it's also easy for tempers to flare and for our Fight-Flight-Freeze to kick in. Good on Ron for keeping his cool. Thanks for sharing the match. Lots to learn from this one.

      Later in the night, when he again sidestepped etiquette, I approached and asked if he was new to league, since he seems to have abandoned several rules and all of the etiquette… to which he screamed at me that hes been playing in this league for 9 years and I need to gtfo his face 😂
      Everyone in the room that knew him, pretty much gave me the “told you so” about his attitude haha. 🤷🏻‍♂️ some people man…

      After some consideration, I've decided that his lack of etiquette (provided it isn't just malicious) isn't too surprising...after all, the guy is playing at a beginners skill level with nearly a decade at least of experience!! Clearly he doesn't catch onto things quickly, and that may include simple etiquette that's normally gleaned just from observing social cues.

    If I'm playing a guy like the shark guy, I would not go to table right away when it's my turn. I would sit and wait about 20 seconds or so, then approach the table the opposite side of the cue ball. Make some non sense planning for the next shot to take up more time and test the shark's patience. My personal take on the approach the table quickly player means he will screw up faster.

  • @Rabid-Pinocchio
    @Rabid-Pinocchio 2 месяца назад

    Wow, so much to unpack. First, a tip for your lower-ranked players. When the Cueball is on the rail it is a very difficult shot. Snooker players favor getting the cue on a rail over trying to get it behind a ball. Besides eliminating almost any spin possibiity it also makes the possibility if misscue much greater. Here's a little tip for dealing with a cueball on the rail. If your normal 'feather' which is the back and forth motion before the shot, if you move the cue let's say 5" fwd and 5" back or whatever it is, on rail shots, shorten than to about 1", or even less. This will give you better control and almost eliminate the likelyhood of a miscue. Sharking! As a snooker player it is an understood rule of etiquette that before your opponent shoots you get absolutely out of the line of sight of the opponent. If you can't do that then you freeze and stay absolutely still. Having played pool in many leagues, many clubs and bars, Most pool players know this rule too. Sometimes though a player just won't know, sometimes it is deliberate too though and the way to deal with it is to refuse to shoot until they stop. Just politely explain to them that their movement is distracting. Their own captain should step in and rectify that issue.
    The push shots, simply put, if the tip of your cue is in contact with the cueball when it contacts the object ball it is a pushfoul. As you said, the travel of both balls is a good indicator of a push. Now, 3's and 4's will often be gray with specifics and that is why either the shooter or the opponent should have someone watch the shot, up-close. IF they do not do that then in a situation of whether a push occurred or not favors the shooter. To that extent, since you did not request to 'watch' the shot up close and neither player requested it then in my world there is no foul. If you are not a referee and are trying to armchair quarterback then you need to let that one go. Back to the video, you said that the the 'sharker' has been playing for 8 Years, he knows he's sharking, and you should just call him out imo, tell him directly to stop doing it. The "safe" shot at 15 Mins, Crazy for a 4 to be playing.The off the rail kick/combonation. That's a makable shot for a 6 or 7, not a 4 and I thought that it was a stupid shot, a barplayer shot! IF the shooter wanted to go safe there were MUCH easier ways to accomplish that and personally I thought the kick/combination was a stupid shot and he should have gone safe. That said, that was no safety attempt. ok, at around 16 mins the player stands in the line of site in the first shot and then deliberately moves into the line of site in the Second shot and chalks his cue. He is deliberately using this tactic, no doubt about it and someone needs to call him out and make him sit down. That makes me really mad seeing that. I think I've written enough but 2 more things. Watching this reminds me why I hated APA. Sure it is fine for beginner-level players but if you're a student of the game there are so many frustrating/maddening/infuriating aspects to that system. Lastly a little levity. In Michigan we used to have "sharking" tournaments. In essence you could do anything to distract your opponent short of touching them. There was always lots of boob flashing etc and they were enormous fun. Ta-Ta (no pun intended)

    Yep, he’s ignoring every etiquette. The first push through is clearly a foul. Shot cueball directly into a ball that it was almost touching is an automatic call. But, the waddling up to the table while you are going down to shoot is clear snarking. Would have told him ‘do it again and you concede the game’. Also, if that fellow has been playing for 9 years he’s clearly had nobody working with him on his game.

    I've been banging around pool rooms for almost 50 years. First off, the 7 - 8 was too close to call and if so, the call goes to shooter, no foul. His push shots should have been obvious, but at his skill level, with his equipment, and stabbing stroke, I doubt he knows what a push or double hit is. When it comes to the sharking, I've told players, that play will resume when they sit down and stfu. Most disturbing to me was giving up the rack when he's got 3 colors and the 8 ball all in close quarters, and the guy slams every ball. I would be stealing from you at even money he doesn't get out from there, even with BIH!

    Sharking: At 7:20 he's out of Ron's eyeline as best I can tell. Where you stand / what you're doing doesn't matter if I can't see you (doesn't apply to things that could be heard) so long as you're not being intentionally distracting. At 10:58, that was 8-ball first but I know what you meant lol.14:19 he doesn't seem to be in his eyeline either, but the angle/lens effect could be distorting that. At 15:45 though, there's just no excuse lol. I have newbies brand new to organized cue sports on one of the teams I captain. I've had to coach a couple etiquette related things, but it sorta *clicks* for everyone at some point and things like not doing this just comes naturally. Nobody needs to be told not to do this after 2 weeks of organized play... let alone 9 years.
    The guy either seriously lacks situational awareness, or his old division was just very "bar scene" where that sort of behavior is the norm. The 2 foul shots though... sorta on the captains in my opinion. If a lower SL player has a shot that you know is more than likely going to foul, just call for a watch. Best case, the watch calls it for the foul it is... Worst case, the player rethinks their plan to ensure a clean hit. Either way, cleaner game is played.

    When I first started in league I was so excited about competiting I stood right up beside the table to watch my opponent. I was quickly told not to do that by my team captain. It wasn't sharking because I didn't know any better. If you suspect a double hit is about to occur you have two choices. Say nothing and live with your opponents view of the shot or call for the shot to be watched. When an experienced player fouls and doesn't owe up to it that's cheating. The worst offenders are often drunk. I'll point out the infraction but it it's going to get ugly I'll let it go. Plus in those cases I"m going to win regardless.

    The rule for double hit changed on close proximity balls. Yes it was a double hit but not a foul under current guidelines. Standing in Ron's line of sight is sharking especially with moving his hands. I'd have given him one warning the next instance I would have stopped and protested. It's not only the player but the whole team can be looked at for allowing him to do it. We had a instance where my fiance was playing and her opponent was shooting the eight which was behind her four ball. The guy shot it hit her four ball then the eight. I called foul but they said I have to call for a watch and said no I don't. The eight was obstructed by the four and infront of the eight it is a clearance foul bad hit. I got overuled by the league rep who was on our time cause her and my fiance were not getting along. She I needed to call for a good hit. I'm SL7 in eight ball so I KNOW it was a foul. The rep just broke up with a good friend of mine. We quit the team(I did that night). The next session they were in last place the whole session. The coach got rid of the rep and another couple that were drama mamas so we came back. Funny how the team bounced back and we're in 2nd place right now. But yeah the guy who hit the eight has an attitude towards me so does the rest of his team but I don't care. Being one of two SL7's on our league I get a lot of flack both good and bad. I have my good nights and bad nights but I help anybody who ask for help. The kick Ron made on the seven was a foul. Its real close though.

    No way Ron or Jon are what their skill levels indicate. They are both a skill level under.
    Also, if you let one rack get to you that much, there is a lot to learn. Because you are just getting in your own head. From what I’ve seen, it’s best to learn from that first rack and adjust accordingly and not get worked up about a competitive match. Ron might be a noble honest guy but once people realize that, some don’t give a damn and will take advantage of that.

    1st double hit was as obvious as they come. The second one sure looked like a double hit too, but the balls were so far apart I feel like he would have had to do that on purpose!
    So few people know how to see a double hit in the APA - I think the Dr Dave video should be required viewing for anyone who's an SL 4 or above. I've had our league operator watch shots like that first one, and been flabbergasted when he says "good hit".
    The kick on the 7 really looks like a foul when advancing frame by frame (you can see the 8 ball start moving before the 7), but in real time, there's no way I call that. Especially since the out was there anyway.

    My opinion that first one was a push shot, not a double hit. Which (I think) even in APA is a foul... The second one was close , both a situation where the 45°rule would come into play. Regarding the shark reference, unless the definition has changed, a shark is a really good player. Jon was not sharking anything. His moves, if anything, would be dick moves, commonly made by inferior players who want to win by any means possible.

    Yeah. DBag for sure. When I’ve come across that I’ll get down for my shot. Warm up stroke. Then stand up and go have a sip of my beer. Go ask their captain if he always does stuff like that. It actually doesn’t bother my game much, but it irritates the heck out of me when they wanna ‘play that game’. I don’t think it bothers my game anyway. I believe in honor and complimenting good shots and have no issue telling my opponents as much. Respect is earned and I’ll give it up when due. Sharking is strategies that most efficiently separate an opponent from there money. If you know that game you could easily increase your win percentage by 50% in the APA.
    Unsportsmanlike Conduct in the APA refers to any act to gain an unfair advantage. The rulebook points to cheating and exhibiting poor behavior.
    Your options are to speak with your division rep and league operator. If they do nothing and your disagreeable enough... do unto others as they do to you. I mean if it isn't an issue then why not. In general I try and be nice until it is glaring obvious about their intent. Participation in something for a long time doesn't change the fact that they might have low intelligence or tweaking off drugs or alcohol.
    Personally I think there are dumb rules and rules that get ignored. Such as anything that would alter the path of the cue ball is a foul so I kick at a ball and bump an obstructing ball that then allows a good hit is a foul but it happens fairly often. A 45 degree elevation will cure a double hit. You can mark a pocket with a chalk holder but not a cube of chalk. You can scoop the cue ball over another ball for a good hit as long as it wasn't intentional. Which relies on the honesty of the player.... Which is why we have rules in the first place is to remove the honesty portion from a contest.
    On a side note... Where you in Vegas 3-4 weeks ago with the APA?

    the first one was clearly a double hit, but nobody watching means it goes to the shooter. the second one, he was shooting away from the 9 ball, so without being on top of it being a watcher I would say 'good hit'. Without knowing the layout of the room, I didn't think he was 'too' close. I've played some crowded tight places where your opponent almost has to be standing a foot from the talbe, so hard to tell. BUT, if my opponent walks up the table right as I'm getting ready to shoot the 8 then I consider that as conceding the match and I'll not shoot at it. The second time where he walked up while our guy was getting ready to shoot - sharking. And, the following kick shot to call that a safe - BS. The third time when he walks up and picks up chalk off the table, I'm talking to his captains and/or league operator. The shot on the 7 ball was clearly 8 ball first based of trajectory of the balls. But, probably hard to pick up real time without a spotter looking over it. I had the advantage of stop/start video. But, somebody should have yelled for a spotter well before theshot.
    I will tell you, I can get petty at times. So, if he didn't stop , and his captain didn't have him stop then I would have been blatantly sharking him the remainder of the match. In a similar situation a few years ago had a guy doing this to one of my players. His captain said "well, that' just him" and left it at that. The next time his guy got down on a shot I took two cubes of masters up to the table, rolled them across the table and yelled "come on SEVEN". Then said "Oh, I'm sorry, were you about to shoot". Almost caused an escalated confrontation, but I got my point across.

He needs to practice with distractions so this won’t hurt him. I know personally sharking doesn’t really affect me but years of full contact competitive sports helps. He can’t touch you so just make the shot and look and smile the sharks will stop. Ron got rattled and Ron should look at himself and get sharkproof. Every league has them, unfortunately. Definitely push shot fouls, and the safety call was a joke.The 7/8 looked like a bad hit. Not being an APA player, what is the advantage of marking it a safety? I play a league similar to APA, and the ruling on pushing is, if it's less than a cube of chalk you can push through. We all hate it, but it saves the LO from fielding phone calls, solving arguments on league nights.

    • @drewvonporte
      @drewvonporte  Месяц назад +1

      APA’s thing (or at least my local league’s) used to be: if it’s within a chalk, you essentially MUST jack up or MUST shoot away from it at a sharp angle. I think that was also their way of avoiding a lot of conflict 🤣 at least forced people to TRY!
      So the algorithm takes into account the amount of innings that players take each rack. Lower skill level players may take 5-10 innings/turns per rack to clear…. While higher skill players may take 0-3 innings to clear.
      But what if two high skill level players have a safety battle in a rack? Making it go 12 innings (sometimes more!). You mark safeties on the score sheet to account for that. A safety in the APA is defined as “Not trying to pocket a ball”.
      I know in BCA, you can make a ball AND play safe (forfeit your turn), which I think is Wild lol not in APA. Or any other league I’m aware of…
