    Oscar Pettiford - Cello
transcribed and performed by Tony Overwater on violone.
This is a recording of a transcription I made many years ago. I still give this recording to all my students. I decided to take the challenge to record and play it by heart. It took quite some takes and the violone, with its fats and fixed intonation, is not always suited for Pettiford more fluid intonation. ;-)
Interesting to realize that Pettiford considered the first chord of the blues not to be a dominant chord, as many more modern players do, but as a 6 chord. Often he plays a major seventh in his lines on the first three bars and only changing to dominant in the fourth bar. Very refreshing in my ears.
Also note that every chorus has a clear story. His clear lines and solid notes are a prime example of his wonderful musicianship.
