Another way you could have helped them lose their minds is give yourself absurd levels of strength so you can end the parasites in one hit and they might think they were actually seeing things in the beginning.
lol i cleared the whole parasites mod myself in full survival i just ended up living in a netherfortress controled the infection and made a mob farm when it was in the last phase
