Thanks man, I'm so glad you found my stuff useful in solving a problem. Sometimes its just the simplest of things like a change of pick stroke direction that can solve it.
I was always told this is called "Economy" picking. For anyone looking to increase speed and precision, focus on this and get it down good before moving on.
Strictly speaking economy picking uses more of a sweep "through" the strings for maximum efficiency and economy. My pick strokes in this "contextual picking" are not those, they are far closer to "regular" pick strokes. With economy picking this pattern would likely be picked D-D-U-U-U-U-D or D-D-U-D-U-U-D using the single motion to push through the strings.
Very good analysis and demonstration. I find Hybrid Picking, an easy and efficient way of solving awkward string changes and skipping. It also opens up new, and creative musical possibilities that would be near impossible, and unintuitive with strict Alternate Picking. Thanks
I literally didn't think I'd find a video that covers this. This is great. I find that my pick seems to "pass over" the next string I want to play.

This makes a lot of sense. Many thanks. I have basically been doing this since re-thinking my picking sometime in the last year.

Nice information and video! But for a beginner like me I tried to do this and tangled my fingers together

Incredibly useful. Thanks so much man.
Nice lesson, very helpful explanation. Thank you.
