    "Closed when you hit the ball, but finish with chest open" = force of the swing slung out into the club through impact as it should be, then the club becomes the pulling force that pulls arms and the rest of the body into the finish freely, as long as there's no tension or undue resistance.
    What's weird is, NIcklaus himself said, during the period he called his best ballstriking ever (in his early 40s), that he was working specifically on keeping the shoulders under control and letting them respond to the swing motion on the downswing -- keeping them closed as long as possible, he said -- and slinging that force out into the clubhead, which then became the "new pulling force."
    All of which is to say, if you're dragging the handle around all the time, trying to shove and thrust with the torso and "rotation" of the body, if you drag the club to the finish rather than swinging it there and feeling that snap, it's just an ugly, inefficient, frustrating motion that will never let you reach your potential. _So_ much modern instruction puts people on exactly the wrong path in this regard.

      I think Hogan said it better than anyone with his line of .. 'A purely struck shot starts at the club face then transfers its feeling into your hands into your arms .. and then right into your Heart'.. or something like that..
      For a Golfer getting the result you are looking for is a great reward physically and emotionally.. at the end of the day what is the point or benefit of hitting a great shot if you don't get a kick out of doing it.

    Count Yogi, was an amazing golfer. I think, like he did that his swing is much easier to learn . And once you start using his 'Method' You will not go back and you will play much better golf. And enjoy golf much more. I highly recommend watching "The King of Golf part 1" Count yogi explains the grip, the takeaway. his putting and chipping style, which was brilliant and his exuberance amazing. Great to see you talking about this amazing man and showing his swing.

    People may pick at certain cosmetic aspects here, but I'd invite anybody to pause at the start of the downswing, then use your bracket keys to look at each frame from there to one frame past impact, and tell me that isn't gold.

      The one big regret I have in my golfing life is that I never got to see Yogi in the flesh hitting shots and to be able to ask him intrinsic stuff about his swing.
      He clearly had a mental routine that has never been equalled.. having said that and having spent time with Moe Norman I believe he had a similar mental approach process for swinging a golf club.
      Both Yogi and Moe Norman had the same microsecond timing of getting the club started in the backswing as soon as it was in the address position.
      I think that eliminated all potential negativity or change of decision for the shot at hand .. their process of shot positivity which was established before they hit the shot never got hijacked from the initial positive thought process establishment.
      I think if Yogi had been embraced by the US PGA and allowed to play the Tour I think he would have set records that would have stood forever .. because he was still swinging the club perfectly at 65 years old.
      We will never see anyone like Yogi again.. he was that unique of a Player.

    Hi JH! Have just started the season and come to the same conclusion as you when it comes to caressing off the ball as you show here. When I started, I noticed that the restriction on the twisting causes tension in too many muscles. I have started by reducing the twisting so that the movement itself can be extended during the season. Thinking of Yoga, where you go from rigid to soft. Will return with information about the development. Golf Greetings Martin

      'Yogi lock' is referencing to the swing loading process of 'Count Yogi'.. it's not really referencing 'Yoga' as such .. however.. the process of 'Yoga' is really beneficial to any golf swing because of its flexibility increasing capabilities ..
      What I was trying to show in this video was how 'Count Yogi' loaded his clubhead so softly in his backswing .. I aggree anything you can do to eliminate undue torque in the golf swing the better off we all are ..

    I started this video in the parking lot at work and could not finish it until now 13 hours later after work. Long day but a great way to finish it. I too am enamored with the Count as you may remember JH. I have been using a variation off the Yogi Lock with my fairway woods and driver. I can hit my old 7 wood a mile with this negative load swing. I have tried yogi’s grip but it is uncomfortable. Could you suggest a variation of the grip that may work? I noticed in a comment that you’ll show us Yogi grip in your next vid. Perhaps you could expound on this a bit further. I somehow new that Count Yogi’s swing could work with CL it looks that we’re both correct. Hope you don’t have problems with Count Yogi’s estate. Your really on to something here JH. I never seen you so excited. Better watch out or the mowers will get you. Thanks JH.

    • @1atomicgolf
      @1atomicgolf  6 лет назад +1

      Hi John,
      There will be no problems with the Yogi estate because Timothy Nicholls knows I revere Yogi so much and anytime I talk about him or his amazing golf swing it's just so his name will be remembered and not lost to history.
      There are a couple of things in the Yogi general swing dynamics that are not the same as CL ..like the straight up flinging of the clubface through impact as apposed to a sideways throwing.. but it seems to be a workable difference because when I get it right its off the scale good in the ball flight it delivers.
      I think probably the major plus of Yogi's swing process to CL is the uninhibited flow characteristics of his swing .. as I said when I get it right its just like the club is a part of my body and reacts as a part of the body should react instinctively.
      I am very excited to be reacquainting myself with Yogi mechanics and to see if integrating them into CL mechanics is easilly viable.
      I will give more insight into the Yogi grip because it works so incredibly well ..
      cheers JH

    I cringe every time I see someone set up at address with face square behind the ball because if one wants a ball to go straight to the target the face must be square to target at the exact moment the compressed ball releases off the face. Harry M. Frankenberg (aka Count Yogi) figured out how to whip the club around the hands and lock his wrists down in maxed-out ulnar deviation just as the face squared to target and compressed ball was ready to release. The ergonomics are similar to chopping a V in a horizontal log in an axe, something I did before playing golf and discovering his swing.
    Not without some irony the same wrist action occurs in the conventional sweeping swing after impact if the golfer allows the club force to pull the trailing right arm straight just before the hands turn over. The reason CY had such a vertical finish is because his wrist locking with face square caused the ball to explode off the face as face stops, then raising back foot keeps hands and club moving with toe turning towards target then swinging up.

      Hi Tim,
      The Yogi club setting/loading is so good for creating an automatic downloading process which invariably eliminates any possibility of getting over the shot at impact and creating pulls or drags,
      The other thing is that you cannot get that lag loading with a 'tight' grip, which means you wont be over gripping the club during the swing.

    • @1atomicgolf
      @1atomicgolf  6 лет назад

      A 'Pitch' shot is not a 'Chip' shot.. there is clearly a lot of wrist application in a pitch shot whereas a chip shot is usually just a firm-wristed pushing type shot... I have only seen the available videos of yogi hitting shots from the fringe proximity of the green and he uses a lot of wrist mobility in those shots ..
      I personally when chipping from the green fringe areas use as straight a faced club as I can and just get the ball on the ground quickly and running .. you don't want the ball in the air and being subjected to bounce reactions on landing... unless you have to go over something I advocate just keeping the ball low and getting it running as early as possible in the shot .
      As well with a straighter faced club, you are more likely not to hit the ball fat and bounce into the back of the ball .. the worst shot may be a little thin but it will be on the green and be going forward ...
      I think generally the club player makes chipping way to difficult using sand irons and wedges.. you have to make perfect contact with those clubs .. the straighter face clubs are just more practical in terms of not flubbing a chip shot.

    I’ve been around golf about 60 years and at one point stumbled on to his book. I tried his swing, found it quite easy to do, and had great results, but due to it’s quirkiness never adopted it. I never liked to “look” different. But once while playing in a tournament, I was struggling to find a swing, nothing was going well and I thought about the Yogi swing. Without any preparation, on my next shot I placed the leading edge of the club under the ball, hands behind, and hit the best shot I had hit in quite awhile, right on target…..and it felt great! And as weird as this sounds, until I stumbled on to this video I haven’t used, or even thought about it since. Good to see you promoting his swing, it definitely has merit.

    • @1atomicgolf
      @1atomicgolf  3 года назад +1

      Hi Charles,
      The yogi swing is really only able to be replicated in a reasonable form if you are very bodily flexible.. because Yopgi was able to make a big shoulder turn in his backswing and get his lead arm close to the right side of his head.. which you can only do if you aee extremely muscle pliable .. especially in the shoulder joints and midriff.
      The fullness of his shoulder turn and the height of his hands at the top of the swing gave him a long duration of time for his downswing.. from where his body was at the top of his golf swing it was nearly imposiible for the kands/arms to be the instigators of the downswing.. the lower body was able to lead the upper body very easilly in the downswing.
      I could never move my body through the range of Motion Yogi did .. and as a resultant I couldnt time the clubhead in the downswing remotely as he did .. my version of Yogi's swing would be how I think he would have swung if he was going to hit a half/threequarter punch shot or alike.
      But irrispective of a persons flexibility capabilities.. you can still apply Yogi's principals of his swing..
      cheers JH

    It surely is addictive but difficult to get the timing right.

    • @1atomicgolf
      @1atomicgolf  2 года назад +1

      Hi Arun,
      To time the loading of the clubhead in the backswing for the change of direction into the downswing.. you must have a very light grip pressure and very soft wrists.
      When you do that the clubhead weight when swung back will create the wrist loading automatically in the backswing and as the downswing starts because the grip and the wrists are soft the loading of the clubhead will occur automatically.. and the 'timing' of that loading will happen by itself .
      Think what you would have to do with your hands and wrists in order to swing a tennis ball on a string backwards and forwards in front of you and be able to keep the string fully stretched during the swinging action .. that is the hands/wrist subtleness you need to get the clubhead timing itself in the Yogi Lock swing process.

    Hi JH: Bill at MMI has been recommending a negative initial takeaway in the CL backswing which incorporates some of the Yogi elements and which I personally feel helps with relieving tension and getting a better feel of the clubhead during the swing. On a second matter, what tips do you have for modifying CL when hitting out of deep grass? JBS

    • @1atomicgolf
      @1atomicgolf  6 лет назад

      Hi John,
      The 'negative' loading on the backswing was the cornerstone of Yogi's swing .. as it was with just about every Pro golfer of the 30's/40's .. they all found out that doing that was the way to automatically load the clubhead correctly for the downswing.. it would not be considered fashionable in today's Pro teaching but I believe it still is the correct way to load the clubhead in a golf swing..any golf swing..
      CL out of deep grass.. you really have to take the club up steeper in the backswing than the normal CL backlwing which has a pressuring down in the backswing.. you really just have to get the club head coming steeper into the ball at impact out of long grass.. you just have to build your own process to let you get steeper into the ball in long grass.. its a departure from true CL mechanics but its a specialty shot anyway so modification is acceptable.. and more to the piont required in that situation.

      Because I hit my shots high in the direction I do most of my videos.. which is directly into the wind.. the ball stays in the air a fairly long time..
      All of my videos are about swing mechanics differences etc.. not about how far 'I' hit the ball.. other people will hit the ball whatever distance they can because of 'their' individual physicality's...
      No Wind .. best contact .. carry distance.. 7 iron 155-158 yards ... 5 iron ..170-174 yards.. 3 wood.. 230-235 yards.. driver.. 245-255..I can stretch all of those distances a bit if I need to.. if the greens are big.. and the fairways wide.
      I don't hit the ball far these days.. but I do hit the ball very consistent carry distances.

      The lies in the 'Cow Paddock' are awful.. the 'Crab' grass will rip the head off the club if it catches it .. as my elbows and wrist joints are just about worn out with arthritis and general wear from hitting millions of golf balls over the years I give them a bit of a break by not jarring them of hard lies .. the CL swing works off 'any' lies... as this video clearly shows youtu.be/IV6rHyQ I hit 'up' on every shot I play .. hitting 'down' on the ball instinctively gets the trail side moving out and over the shot for the club golfer ... the better player has a lot more lead hand pull and as a result can get the lead shoulder up as the trail shoulder is going down at impact .. ..
      My club path angle is level' through the ball clearly.. but the 'intention' is that of hitting 'Up' ... you say ..'How do you ' Hit 'Down' with a swing that hits 'UP'.."... My answer to that is simply this .. 'why' are you hitting 'down' in the first place... I certainly don't think that .. and don't advocate that ... I actually have an old video somewhere showing me hitting irons of a concrete path .. I will try and dig it up and post it ...if I can't find it I will do a new video of hitting of a concrete path ... I couldn't do that if I was hitting 'down' ..
      cheers JH

      @@1atomicgolf JH hitting a ball off concrete is way easier than a lie that's submerged in the rough. The ball is completely exposed in a bare lie and you can pick it with CL. But I have yet to see bad lies or uneven stances shown like you would normally find on the golf course.

      Bob,
      Playing uneven lies..uphill/downhill etc.. is the same geometry of setup as you would apply in a conventional swing ..the advantage with the CL swing is that because the ball is off the trail foot the club gets to the ball earlier .. this video explains that stuff. . ruclips.net/video/qzhglOl5QAM/видео.html... a shot out of deep rough requires the same approach as you would use in any golf swing.. the club must be swung and upright as possible and brought down on the ball steeply so as to avoid any grass getting between the clubface and ball..the CL swing clearly with its back foot ball positioning and an in to out 'shallow' attack path angle would not be used for a ball buried in deep rough..
      A ball buried in deep rough is a specialty escape shot .. it requires a very specific swing mechanics application .. the video I did today about 'Line Of Compression' which will up later explains that aspect of shot application...
