Good video. I’ve been running a SDR stick into a Raspberry Pi and feeding to FlightAware, FR24, and ADSB Exchange for years. For amateurs and people interested in military and private aircraft, I highly recommend ADSB Exchange as they do not honor requests to block or mask aircraft, which is common practice by business aviation and the military. Fun story, I’m an airline pilot and we had been told the airport was going to close due to AF1 coming in. ATC wouldn’t tell us how long we had, so I used ADSB Exchange to track AF1 and saw they were about 20 mins out. We rushed to get off the gate early and snuck out just before they closed the airport.
I like these shorter videos. I don’t have a lot of time for RUclips and these shorter vids are cram packed with info. Thank you so much for great content! KO4LWS 73!
Agree! I'd rather watch four short videos with specific content that I can relate to than watch one hour video only to realize it wasn't worth the time.
Nice. I have been running an ADS-B box for about the last 12 years. It is a first generation Kinetic Avionics SBS-1, still going strong. I am a aircraft enthusiast and live under the approach to Manchester (UK) and also under the main Northern Airways in the UK going North -South (Pole Hill) and East -West across the UK from Europe to North America. Mine is a stand alone, not connected to the Internet, that covers my local area, allowing for geography and has its own dedicated laptop so I can take it mobile up on top of the local hills on a nice day, with a couple of spare laptop batteries and its remote aerial with an old cookie jar lid as a ground plane for the magnetic base of the aerial for better coverage as the SBS-1 box is usb powered. I am a "tail number" spotter, so mine has been modified to show me if I have seen that particular aircraft or not before, instead of searching through my various "Tail numbers" books every time an aircraft appears on my screen.
Some of these aircraft tracking places will actually send you free equipment to set up and use to track aircraft. The cavaet is you have to dedicate your computer 24/7 for sending aircraft location. For an school HAM radio club might be a good idea.........
Wow, nice timing, another radio set to add to the collection, I recently acquired a Yaesu FTA-550 (for a great price) and disabled the PTT on it, and have started to listen on it. :)
Same here! I previously lived in a high rise downtown Orlando in the flight path of KMCO. I could track some aircraft as far north as North Carolina. Lot of fun!
@@Mryazici As always it depends on conditions. Indoor vs out door. It was good to begin with but I upgraded the antenna to a " Diamond SRH77CA". You may want to upgrade your antenna on your FT2dr.
Sometimes if you lookup the Mode S code in Google you will get a result. That unknown might be a US Navy P-8. It was spotted around Whidbey Island so probably some kind of Navy aircaft.
Super Cool, this has been around a long time, also can rx ACARS Data for more info, I used to have a vhf radio in my vehicle to listen in real time.. also been in aviation my entire career,., cheers Josh
Hi, with the subject gadgets you are talking about, does it mean I no longer need my scanner to monitor live communication between the tower and aircraft?
Any tutorial for the yellow VHF stick? I'm confused if it's a scanner itself.. then how we dial frequencies? or is it a relay between a proper scanner and a computer to air online. Thanks.
Hi, I just ordered the subject antenna (VHF Airband Outdoor Antenna by AirNav) which comes with a 7.5 meter cable. May I possibly know what particular cable comes with this antenna? Also, if I need to add 50 more feet of cable, can I use the bigger coaxial RG 8 cable? The smaller coaxial cable is the RG 58. I was told if the total antenna cable length is over 50 feet, better to use the RG 8 (low-loss cable).
Very interesting video, thanks. Question with the XRange2 can you connect it to a PC and see the data direct or it has to be stream only, also do you also get VHF AirBand with the XRange2 ?
I’ve been adsb website which is pretty interesting. VHS air band does that receive military aircraft transmissions? Living outside of DC we have tons of military aircraft overhead at any given time.
Excellent vid, thank you. Would you please make vid on small budget friendly listening to local airband communications without the need of computer? Eg I bought CCrane Skywave, but would prefer small cheap handheld like Baofend uv5r, but that doesn't have the frequency range and modulation. I think there are a lot of guys like me who dream about flying and would love listen in, but without pc or smartphone. I would consider buying used, but cannot sift through the web what radios to look at and new ones are at least ~$200... Anyway, this was great vid and I might consider playing with pc solution too

@@TheDruracer I also have one on my SDRplay which is why I asked. I have not priced those antennas but my discone was fairly inexpensive. I have received Air Band but I can receive so much more with the discone.
It is a good question and I think the answer is still the Kenwood that are not sold anymore. Of course one obvious answer is the 9700 but those are not hand held.
Has anyone done something like this for local fire or police? It would be fantastic to be able to see response units in action on a real time map. I’m sure police would balk, but they are public entities and should be subject to public scrutiny. This information would be invaluable in an emergency event. Of course transponders would need to be on all equipment and since ground based it might be a bit more complex to relay locations, but cell infrastructure could used to facilitate.

I usually use the IC-R6 for listening in to the Air Band, works surprisingly well with the Nagoya 771.
I built a PiAware with a FlightAware stick and my own ground wave 1090 MHz antenna. That gave me a FlightAware Enterprise level account.
That’s pretty cool!
I did the same! Definitely a fun project. 👍🏽

I've been listening to air traffic since I bought my realistic Pro 37 brand new. And still use it to this day. Let that sink in.
That pic of your dad is awesome, so much style/‘tude :)
I think so too!
I have fun with my Flightradar24 setup. I also have marine ASI receiver running.
There's also adsb exchange website.
Another tool for the Drone operations as a in field VO. I monitor airbands on my Yaesu FT3D.
How is the reception on the ft3d, my ft2dr is receiving but it is not ideal to listen, quality and range is not uptopar

Very cool, I built a collinear antenna for tracking aircraft on 1090 that works okay but I'm now thinking of getting a better antenna.
after re binge watching hrcc VODS for the past days I've been hearing the livestream bgm in my sleep
I need to know the title of that song man
Thanks for the informative videos that you always seem to produce.
This was very informative. Thank you for your time it is appreciated.

Hi Josh, will the airnav antenna for VHF Airband work with Uniden Receiver or only with dongles?
I was just looking at this to play around with, nice
People should use adbsexchange, which is open source and does not filter military or privacy ADS-B information.
This looks like an ad for radarbox.
Exactly! I feed adsbexchange exclusively from my location. Wouldn't dream of sending data to any of the other, commercial, censoring sites.
I will have to get the larger one for sure, I would like if it was USBable rather than networked so I can install it into my overlander.
Can I just tune my HT (THF6A) to 108-136Mhz?

How does the ADS-B signal work? It seems that I can receive hundreds of positions per second while something like APRS is like one per second.
Does it work for local helicopters? If so how do I get that piece of kit?
What TV show did I see you on? It was good!
Phantom Signals! Thanks for watching! 👍
I’m interested in your product but I want to hear Mexico airport, how many airports can I hear in Mexico ?
Seems like a discone would cover the whole frequency range.

Interesting. Wonder how well this would work with a Comet Discone that I already have?
It would probably work fine.

Is that how flightradar24 works?
Pretty much

So preying on people who don't realize those are just RTL-SDR dongles and the equivalent of a Raspberry Pi is a profitable business now. Great.
I think they’re trying to make it easy. Plus they’re pretty cheap.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Yeah, I'm surprised they kept the price down. Good for the non-geek!
I got mine for free from RadarBox and it ain't no pissy dongle.
can you help me make a car?
