My experience with my Artem sailcloth strap has been great. I have no hesitation putting it on my US$150 Citizen diver. It makes the watch look more premium and after the break-in period it is one of my most comfortable straps. I move the strap, which has quick-release spring bars, between several of my budget watches and therefore the strap cost is shared amongst them. It even dresses up my Seiko Speedtimer SSC813P. If you want a quality look and feel then you have to pay for it. A $15 strap on a $150 watch makes the whole package look cheap. A $75 strap on a $150 watch lifts the whole package to a new level IMO.

Good to know! I just bought my SSC813P as well and am considering getting an Artem sailcloth strap as well. Which version do you have? I am thinking the all black, but curious if you went different color stitching. And did you go fancy spring clasp or one of the standard buckles?

And I thought I was being extravagant buying a $50 leather strap for a $200 Seiko! But, although I have no experience with high, (or low), end sailcloth, I agree that a better strap almost always makes a watch look and feel better. The strap may not be the reason that the watch is useful....but it is a large part of the watch wearing experience.

As with all hobbies, there's no roof when talking about expenses. I am far from rich, even from wealthy and my daily driver watch is a $700 watch, but when it comes to straps, for me a $50 strap is just OK. My best strap is an authentic WWII piece of canvas turned to a custom strap by a skillful craftsman. it cost $150 and it's not the most expensive I've seen!

The whole concept of a deployant clasp is worth a discussion in and of itself lol. Spending bracelet money on a sailcloth strap - even with a deployant clasp - is the conversation we should be having. I've tried many sailcloth straps and they do have an elevating effect on nearly any watch (especially if they're actually waterproof, as originally intended). However the durability can be suspect (particularly the lower cost ones) and ultimately they should be an inexpensive alternative to a high quality leather strap. I'm unconvinced.

@@JusttheWatch You'd think there would definitely be a market for one that's above your basic $20 one, but below the > $100 Artem straps. But I haven't seen any others when I went looking. I know there was Mr. Sailcloth but those looked similar to the Ritchie ones to me. I think Rios1931 makes some "engineered" straps that look kinda like sailcloth, but no clue if they are the same thing or not.

    • @UGA.D
      @UGA.D 2 года назад +9

@@JusttheWatch Here's a small list... First, most "sailcloth" straps are actually other materials made to look like a sailcoth weave. These usually include PVC, leather and nylon. Even Artem states that their straps are "Synthetic upper material and leather underside coated with a layer of natural rubber."
      Those I've tried...
Mr. Sailcloth Straps [$40] have traditionally been embossed PVC. They look nice, but mine required a crazy long break-in period and still never felt supple. They now claim to make the new ones from fabric.
Geckota/Zuludiver [£28.00] makes a similar (still PVC) strap that are a little more supple than Mr. Sailcloth. I've had a good experience with these on an Omega Seamaster.
Brady Straps [$34.95] embosses leather to look like sailcloth. I wear one on a Stowa Marine Classic for its appearance. They have a Nubuck lining, though. While comfortable, I wouldn't classify them as infinitely waterproof. The are also very bolstered, making it a little more difficult to develop a uniform curve to the strap (especially nearest the lugs).
Barton sailcloth straps [$25.75] are really nylon. Like Brady Straps, they have a leather lining. They're comfortable, but not the most robust of those I've tried.
Others I have yet to try:
MiLTAT (Strapcode) sailcloth straps [$48.99] are also nylon rather than PVC. As they lack a leather lining, I imagine these would be much more waterproof than the Brady or Barton straps as a result.
WatchBandit sailcloth straps [40 €, though some are on sale for 20 €] are also a nylon weave. They admit that their straps start out stiff but say they break in nicely. I can't speak to that yet.
MKS Straps [£19.95] doesn't state their material. However, you can check out Average Bros full review ruclips.net/video/jrRDDsJyeMk/видео.html to learn more about them.

Several months back I purchased the Artem sailcloth, I am very impressed with the quality. Previous sailcloth straps I've owned begin to fray at the buckle holes in just weeks. The Artem is a bit stiff at first but nicely forms with watch and wrist in time. Mine still looks like new. I wish they would have let me choose which buckle I wanted. The strap came with stainless buckle so I purchased the black PVD separately (looks really good). I will be buying a blue version as soon as they offer a 22-23 mm.

  • @UGA.D
    @UGA.D 2 года назад +3

It IS a clean look, but be aware there is an associated thickness, too. When on, you have the thickness of the tail if the watch, topped with the fold-over of the deployant which is all sandwiched under the thickness of the main strap. That's a lot of thickness. You'll notice it more and more the thinner your wrist is. You may say, "Yeah, but on a conventional deployant you have those three layers, too." Yes and no. While you do have three layers, they are not all between the strap and your wrist. The conventional stack goes deployant, main strap, and tail, keeping that excess on the OUTSIDE of the system.

I won't lie -- I like the look of Artem's sailcloth straps (both of them), and I get it is a luxury strap which means a "luxury price"...but I just don't understand how it is justified vs the cost of manufacturing it. It's not like it is a natural resource and they might have to waste tons to get the perfect piece/cut as it is engineered. So although I understand it, it still bugs me that the price is probably 90% inflation on these.

I think that high en straps really elevate more inexpensive watches and is totally worth it. The axios you showcased looked fantastic with it and sometimes I think it’s better to get good straps than buy more watches. I’ve been collecting for a while and have slowly started selling and giving away watches because I tend to gravitate towards 3 or 4 all the time.
Think about it this way. You can buy an inexpensive suit. But if the overall quality of the cloth is good and it’s fitted properly all you need to look like s million bucks would be a great pair of shoes, tie, and belt all of which are much less expensive than the suit

Excellent video Dave. Apart from an Omega on a bracelet, all my watches are in the affordable bracket including a number of Seiko's and other divers for my diving hobby. I never really thought about buying luxury watch straps. I bought my first one last week from a Turkish maker who is extremely well known amongst luxury watch owners for watch boxes and watch trunks that cost up to $10,000, and watch winders for an eye watering $20,000!. But they have beautiful hand made leather straps for $130 to $200. So I got one at $159 for a green dial Seiko Presage and it truly makes a watch feel like a million bucks. I really like the look of these sailcloth straps too. I can now understand the difference between high quality and so many normal run of the mill straps. A good strap can make any watch look and feel great.

  • @joshhopkins2109

I see Artem stepped up. When I bought my original Artem strap a couple years ago, it was no good for my sub-7" wrist (unless I added holes, which I felt I shouldn't have to do for such a pricey strap). I got the deployant clasp, too, which made the fit even worse for my small wrist. Even worse, at the time Artem did not allow returns.
Fast forward to now, and I see the straps are slightly shorter to accommodate more wrists, and they actually have a return policy. Well done, Artem.
That said, $200 for the loop-less by the time you get the clasp, which you need to buy if you aren't putting the strap on a watch that already has a deployant clasp you can swap over? Yikes. I still have the previously purchased strap (being that, you know, I couldn't return it), so maybe I'll add some holes in that (lol, I still haven't), and get on with it.

It’s not made of real sailcloth. It’s embossed synthetic material to look like sailcloth. Their explanation is because real sailcloth is rough and not very comfortable on the wrist, they did this to make the strap more comfortable. I got a blue one yesterday and I love it. ❤ It’s very comfortable on the wrist, excellent alternative to leather, nato, or other single layer molded rubber straps. The clasps isn’t very well finished but for the price I think it’s pretty good. Let’s just hope it’s durable.😊

I think this design is based off the seamaster line. Not sure it's the speedmaster pro line as the few I have I all purchased on the stainless steel bracelet. The deployant is very similar I think to what is on the aqua terra rubber models. Can't say for sure though as my aqua terra again I purchased on bracelet. Either way compared to Omega pricing I'd say it's very fair, even if you get 20% off on Omega accessories.

I understand they are geared towards luxury watches but IMHO many luxury watches that look good matched with quality sailcloth straps either come with those straps or are offered as an add-on/option from the manufacturer. Why pay so much extra for an "after market" strap when you can get an OEM for the same additional cost. I've experienced both cheap and expensive clasp like those being offered here ... the higher price for the Artem is NOT justified. The product is over priced.

It's obvious that this strap is made to be sold along with this deployant clasp, since there are no keepers. The strap is great but my clasp broke in less than 24 hours and customer service is not good

Speaking of affordability and full blown utility...check out citizen cb0225-14e. These sailcloths reminded me of this watch.

I have this clasp on my Hamilton, where to buy the clasp like this with one part of the strap goes under the other?

Nice review of a nice strap, but Artem have a VERY limited colour choice of black or blue.

They look well worth the outlay .
what I'd seek to know is if they have colour variations?... Do they Dave?. Good review mate & yes it suits all the watches you tried it on.

They have a few different options for stitching, and on the original one I think they have navy blue.

These are a bit ridiculous for a value watch channel. Well, you got a few nice products for free and had to make a video though didn't ya. $100+ bands or bracelets represent 30-50% of the cost of a value watch. No one is buying a $1000 band for an Omega now are they?

I don't like this material. It frays over time, it's stiffer than I would like it to be and it looks better in pictures than in real life. Hard pass at this price.
