    Lute is crazy man. I just discovered it today from a different vid, and although the "parent" system isn't as convenient as handling conjugated forms out of the box, especially for Japanese, Lute is surely the LinQ final boss! Refold is consistently real af for sharing FOSS tools and workflows

    This seems great! Thank you for the guide, I will definitely be trying Lute in the future, especially when I fully dive into Russian and not just dabble in it. For now though, I need to really practice listening to Japanese and I am afraid that if I use Lute I will completely neglect my listening since I find reading fun, and the part where you have to manually connect the word family seems pretty fun to me.
    Anyways, thanks again Ben I will most definitely be revisiting this guide at a later date.

      Do you mean having Lute launch automatically when you start your computer? Or are you having problems running the program at all?
      But for either problem, you should join the Lute or Refold Discord server. It's easier to ask for help there, since you can send images and links and things back and forth.

    potrénovat - train a bit, train for a while, train some (imperfective version of trénovat, here using a rather common prefix "po" which often implies doing some action a bit, perhaps several times, or just have a bit of fun with that, as the imperfective verbs work and as clear from the aforementioned notes, this version of verb cannot describe directly present actions or present tense)

    Does Lute support Chinese reading, too? I have a lot of popup reading apps and plugins, but I like some of the Lute features like possibility to use custom dictionaries, pictures, etc...

    • @Refold
      @Refold  9 месяцев назад +2

      The only kind of Chinese that's "officially" supported by default is Historical Chinese. But this is mostly due to parsing. There are several people in the server who have modern Mandarin working for both Simplified and Traditional characters.
      You should install the program and try it out! If you have trouble, the Lute Discord will be more than happy to help.

      You can easily transfer your database over! If you're not techy, I'd recommend joining the Lute Discord to ask for help. But if you're fairly comfortable with tech, you can copy your data over.
      You should be able to see where those files are stored in the Settings.
      I hope this helps!

    If I'm studying Chinese do the classical Chinese settings work, or do I need to make a new language? I feel confused why classical Chinese is there but modern Mandarin isn't

    • @alexbeserra
      @alexbeserra 9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, the Classical Chinese settings works

    • @Refold
      @Refold  9 месяцев назад +2

      I can't exactly say, but the likely reasons are:
      - Someone studying Classical Chinese put it in there and can verify that it works, but there isn't a learner of Mandarin who's verified that things work
      - Or, there's some parsing thing which hasn't been solved for modern Mandarin yet. I know that Korean, for example, is actually quite difficult to parse for readers like this (I'm not positive why).
      My guess is that the settings will work fine, but you'll have to test! If you have trouble, I know they'll be more than happy to help out on the Lute Discord.

      Depends on your operating system. With Linux, it's super easy. With Windows, it's not too bad, but a bit technical, and with macOS, it's kind of a pain. Here's the tutorial: refold.link/lute-on-startup

    wish there would finally be a real Lingq killer. This seems to still miss tracking features of known words/words read, etc... but most importantly, not possible on a mobile/tablet.

    • @Refold
      @Refold  9 месяцев назад +2

      It's got known words/words read, but they're not displayed super well yet. The dev is aware there's a lot of design work to be done, but he's not a designer 😅
      As for mobile support, I agree that that'd be amazing and a HUGE step for the project, but building a mobile app is a really big step and there are a lot of potential issues and problems. The only way that it might happen is if a talented React Native dev comes along to the project and decides they want to make a mobile version. So we'll see if that ever comes to be!
      Thanks for your comment :) I hope you try out the tool despite its shortcomings!
      - Ben

    • @jz4901
      @jz4901 9 месяцев назад +2

      I think some people have Lute set up on their own servers, and they access it with mobile or tablet. But I don't use it that way myself, and so can't comment. If you're asking about a _native_ mobile app, you're right, that's not available. Mobile is a different beast entirely -- hopefully another dev can pitch in.
      There is a "words read" chart already. "Known words" is on the backlog, if someone works on it then we can review it and merge it into main Lute. Cheers!

    Why is this one prefered to FLTR?
    Edit: After watching I guess:
    Status prior to open the lesson, images in the fields, embedded audio player and looking page.
    Still would like to hear it :)

    • @Refold
      @Refold  9 месяцев назад +1

      The main reasons are: it's actively being worked on and the code for FLTR is brutal and very difficult to understand/work with. A better code base is more trustworthy and easier to improve down the line.
      But they're very similar! If you prefer FLTR and already have a workflow for it, there's no real reason to switch (yet).

      Hey there, I wrote Lute and your question is a great one. Honestly, your choice of tool doesn't matter, as long as you're happy and it keeps you engaged. Lute has some features that I needed that nothing else did -- images and parent terms, at first. It feels smoother and easier to use, to me.
      Re code quality: I tried to contribute to other open source project to make changes, but they were impossible to fix without doing a total rewrite, hence Lute. But if you're not running into any problems with whatever you're using, it doesn't matter :-) I've tried to make Lute's code more sane, hoping for long-term viability and contributions from other users -- ultimately hoping for "the anki of reading software", or at least a step in that direction.

      It does work on Mac! And yes, it's still not *that* easy to install, but it is easier than it used to be! And it's only going to get easier as it gets worked on more. But in my opinion, it's worth the hassle for the benefit it provides.
