- Let's take a look at the set that Richard Garfield never wanted to produce. In today's mail day video, I am completing my Homelands journey. The perfect excuse to ramble on about this unique MTG set that was released in 1995. What are some of the cards that stand out, what do we know about its weird history and what about that one of a kind top down design?

I still remember the joy of completing this set last year. It definitely is what drives me as a colector to be able to complete sets i wasnt able to finish back in the 90s
Activly collecting The Dark, 4th, Homelands, Rinascimento and Ice Age, almost there! All the sets from when I started.
The Dark is one of my favorites. Beautiful set. I just finished collecting it earlier this year.

Homelands is cool. Sure, it's not powerful, but the lore is far more interesting than what they poop out now, it has loads of gorgeous art, the characters are memorable, and it feels like an actual world, not a bunch of random dudes with some crappy mechanic randomly stapled on like current sets.
The amount of products coming out at the moment is 🤯 I play a pre-release from time to time, but I can’t keep up. Also, what’s up with all those weird art varieties, it’s impossible to find a normal magic card in a booster these days 😂
@@TimmytheSorcerer There's no way to keep up with everything in a financially responsible manner unless you're loaded. It's insane.
All the variants reminds me of what happened to both sports cards and comics before both markets crashed in the 90's. Nothing but gimmicks leading to gimmickier gimmicks. The future does not look good for Magic.

The Flavor came first, but if you focus on some of the cards from that set you'll see proto-mechanics that are now staple in MTG. Example: Reef Pirates - Mill Engine and a Creature; Forget - Self Discard/Card Draw; And Vampires/Minotaurs along with their Castles and Doos!

Thanks Brian and yes, the foreign sets are also a lot of fun to collect since they're not too pricy (at least most of the cards) and people are usually willing to trade.

I know, it’s a small set but insanely pricy!! The first set I ever started collecting was antiquities when I was 11. Now those were the times to collect sets..

Homelands is my favorite set, no joke, it has a vibe to it that is very different from other sets, i actually collect Autumn Willows hahaha, i have 33 black border ones and 20 gold border.
Also i have a lot of spanish Homeland cards, they are kinda rare, not expensive but hard to come by.
What's your plan with all those Willows?? 😂

Not really, but i would love to play that card in some old school deck, sadly Homelands isn't allowed.
Weirdly enough I have a full set in the same binder , my set was collected and straight to binder 20+ years ago now and will be mint , not seen the light of day . Pity it's not worth a lot or with things like they are atm in the UK it would be straight on Ebay .

I love Homelands, I'm currently completing a full set myself. There are so many sweet cards to choose from. Torture is very flavorful. Come to think of it, black is very badass in Homelands overall!

lol maybe Portal set? it s a nice set with cool cards ! I ll probably go for it after homelands, always cool to move forward and start a new adventure collecting a new set. I often realise that there are some very cool cards and mechanics.

Magic players always like to diss this set as so bad. The art is so cool and it has a unique flavor to it who cares if its not a money set. I still want to collect as many OLD FRAME magic cards as I can find. SCOURGE was the last set with the traditional frames.
Every time I handle an OLD Frame magic card I always treat it with care and respect like I'm afraid to drop them or get them damaged in any way. Not so with ugly modern frames.
Men... Put those cards in perfect fit sleeves

Homelands definitely gets a bad rap when FE was exponentially worse. I wish they didn’t erata Baron, they made him a vampire but can’t regenerate himself, as though that would have made him OP or something lol

The Homelands set was such a disappointment unfortunately due to poor game play mechanics. I wish WOTC would revisit the set and make the cards actually good. The story and characters were quite fascinating and the art was great. I have a set as well so congratulations on finishing off yours.
