I wish we talked more about the fact that Monica was TWENTY TWO YEARS OLD and working under one of the most powerful men in the world. The power imbalance was so shockingly large that calling this an affair and not blatant coercion was a great injustice to her back then.
I think the power imbalance is the big issue here; if they were the same age I’d feel about the same way about it as I do now, that it was a massive and unfair power imbalance, but if they were of similar status and a different age (i.e. if he was another intern at the White House instead of the President) I’d feel like they were both consenting adults with an unfortunate age difference who hooked up
I have so much respect for Monica and how she has taken an incredibly difficult situation and turned it into something positive. The strength and courage she has shown are admirable. I can't even imagine going through everything she went through and coming out the other side, let alone emerging strong enough to turn my darkest hours into a platform for good. Kudos to her.
Exactly right. The whole montage of Leno going off was just ridiculous. This poor woman gets with the president, one person, but somehow these sexist asshats turn that into her having a whole "sticky closet". And the president definitely took advantage of the power dynamic imbalance on this poor young woman and got relatively little blame or shame for the whole thing. For her to come out and speak publicly about it just shows her bravery, and for her to still have a sense of humor about it shows her character.
Once again, John, you show how deeply you feel about women's rights. The interview with Monica Lewinsky was one of your best, and you allowed Monica to shine a light on how shaming can potentially ruin a person's life. Thank you, and bless both you and Monica.🙏🙏🙏
First time seeing the Monica interview. She's a brave, strong woman, choosing to help & encourage people, & I love that about her. She's an encouragement to everybody who's made a mistake or been the victim of bullying & abuse, & I love how far she's come. As a person with parts of my past I'd rather keep secret, her whole demeanour is refreshing & delightful. If you are being bullied or abused, hang on; it will end, you can escape, not now, not tomorrow, but you will, & there are people willing to help you heal & recover xxx
Hey, John. Beautiful interview. I absolutely admire Ms. Lewinski. She is absolutely someone to look up to. I want to reference this part of my life because I would have loved to know her view on our shaming situation in 2015 with Kim Davis. I think the idea of shaming sometimes being beneficial hits exactly on something you were trying to discuss with her. I truly wish I could have her view. It would be let's say... therapeutic. - D. “Tucker Carlson - the answer to the question: what if the word ‘thud’ suddenly grew a face” I think this may be my favorite. “Per-formatively outraged picket fence” is also really layered, but this is savage.
I guess I’m a really big Monica Lewinsky fan! I wish I could see more of her good-natured humor. In the 90’s, when this was still huge, my aunt told her hairstylist she wanted the Monica Lewinsky (move over, The Rachel!) 💁♀️
The fact that Nicki Minaj referenced Monica Lewinsky in even one of her songs, let alone *that many,* says a lot more about her than I think many people are willing to hear.
15:43 the amount of pain she had to go through...she was broken because of the lack of universal healthcare...punished, humiliated publicly for having an injury she could not afford...thank you republican party
The sad part is that Lewinski was seduced by Clinton (and, let's face it, given how powerful he was at the time could she really say no?) and yet Clinton was pretty much given a pass while Lewinski went through hell
President is basically a retirement job. His career was already over once he got the second election anyway. He was impeached and they wasted a good portion of his term talking about how he had sex with an intern making it a lame duck term. The only way he "got a pass" was that he didn't actually lose the presidency. The impeachment was literally shaming him. If you paid attention to what happens on C SPAN more than SNL you'd have noticed, lol. The actual news was about a legal proceeding to remove the president from office for sleeping with young women who he holds power over, the jokes were about a dress with semen on it and the woman who apparently saved it instead of cleaning it.
One thing w social media and kids which might be obvious is the bullying doesn’t stop when the school day ends. I couldn’t wait to get home and be able to do what I wanted w out incessant bs
@@Uruz2012 its not just social media tho, online gaming has become a cess pool of humanity, and in this day and age good parenting matters more than ever. A lot of kids dont partake in that nonsense and choose to stay quiet or mute someone being annoying, but theres always that little annoying kid screaming the N word at everyone and everything, those are the kids that need better parenting for sure.

ye dunno what exactly it would take to laugh at that. Acting laugh/courtesy laugh is prbly part of it, respect for Sean Hannity would be another requirement. Prbly also just being old helps too. Not sure how much nationality changes your perception of that comment he likes to repeat.
I wouldn't change nothing if I was her. Her experiences have made her who she is today. I just want you to know that I never made any rap songs or any songs of any genre about this situation and it never bothered me at all as a us citizen the slightest bit

I wanted to write something like this, but you nailed it. I got so much respect for her. I would never have survived anything like that.

Always thought it was both unfair and typical, that Monica should be the only victim of the scandal.
I love her point that no one ever suggested bill should change his name

Man that scarlet "A" is in the main story's "Public Shaming" graphic is just... *Mwah* masterful
Thank you Alvin, hahaha that made me smile
I'm German. Our three course meal is a six-pack, sauerkraut, and sausage.
You forgot about dessert, invading Poland.

We all have at least one relationship in our past that we deeply regret, I think TBH Monica has aged way more gracefully than Clinton
To be fair, when their "relationship " happened, Monica was in her early 20s and Bill was in his late 40s
This episode is so good! Definitely top 3 all time Last Week Tonight episodes. Great work, Jax!
As a 22 year old listening now, thanks John!

Sure, but you can always decide to not look at social media. We were all effectively in jail all day five days a week for 13 years.

Well Monica you are very pretty, and thank you for all your hard work on the anti-bullying initiatives!
