This wonderful track reminds me of a period in late 1973 at University, when much great music was experienced, and on the cusp of a relationship that was to last a lifetime. This time of life was sooooooooooo good. Thank you Roy Harper for being part of this.
Roy Harper has just always been a part of my life since my teens. And I'm now 64. A constant, whose artistic quality has not, in anyway, been diminished by the passage of time. I can return to his work and never cease to be comforted, delighted.
@@sheldon-dy2zq Well that's a matter of opinion. Mine (and probably Roy's too) is that it is the best ever! I don't know of anything better and I've got a vast collection of all the best in Rock over the course of the past seventy years. I love this better than anything else.
@@ophergoodwin9236 Yep, fantastic opinion, though mine is just a little different. But this is my #1 folk/rock album, just edging out even Hark! The Village Wait and Liege and Lief.
Aside from the Zeppelin resume, Page's performance here is just gorgeous. He adds the right amount of seasoning without overshadowing Roy's delivery... I never tire of this one. Always rediscovering it with each listen.
Stormcock is widely held to be his masterpiece but it's not as simple as that. Apart from a few near misses everything he did was a masterpiece. It just depended on when you came across him and how receptive you were at the time.
It was 1975 for me. A friend who was an incredible guitarist (until she developed RA) introduced me to his music with a casual, "This guy is just the best." She was right.
Good point well made! I'm just properly getting into this LP now in 2023. I bought LedZep3 in my teens, late 80's. So I know I've been aware of him all that time. Why now? Who knows or cares, I'm here now and blown completely away by this song. A masterpiece, plane and simple.
To me this is one of the best songs ever written, in my top five. It's an opinion of course so anyone is welcome to disagree. I can just sit back and it gives me goose bumps even when I know what's coming. Genius.
Who, Harper or Page? Harper is a decent folk-style guitarist, but nothing out of the ordinary. The lead guitar on this track is played by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page.
Page's playing here is magical, almost mystical. Should become 46 to listen to this. It's a pity I have not listened to Roy Harper's music more! I have to make up for this mistake, judging from the sonic pleasure and surprise I found in this song. Incredible tune! Hats off really.

I saw him perform a few times at Queens University in the late sixties/ early seventies on stoned Sunday nights. He was nearly lynched one time when he stupidly voiced an opinion about what was happening here ( " The Troubles " had just kicked off ) but knowing nothing of the everyday realities affecting ordinary working-class people of both persuasions, who wanted nothing to do with killing each other. That said, I remained a fan forever. I wish you rainbows Roy.
That sounds like pretty typical Harper! A real Jekyll and Hyde character, capable of some beautiful songs, but even in his music his arrogance and projecting resentment come through clearly. He's even been known to wee on members of the audience if he thought they weren't paying enough attention.
Yes, in my valueless opinion also (hello Opher and co.) one of the all-time great albums, but, ya know, hafta say, maybe not even Roy’s best - I think HQ is the winner there! Love and best wishes, Nick
thanks roy for the music and the mind i have as a young boy in the late 80s i heard youre whatever happend to jugula lp and the journy through the years was a joy. thank you hope you have many more years
I think Jimmy is playing all through this song from what I can hear. Those secondary melodies that embellish the main rhythm sound so much like his playing in Zeppelin and if you see them play it live together you can sort of watch them slot the two sounds together, alongside each other.
Yeah there’s no difference in the playing from the entire song compared to 9:50, it’s a duet throughout the piece. There’s a solo at the end of the song however
Again, i have listened to A LOT of the TRULY GREATEST music ever (as i think have quite a few others here). This little number comes in at a cosmos-crushing #16 on my Top 1000 Songs of All Time. (The Beatles, Genesis and King Crimson wrote some nice ones too - there's a lot of unbelievable songs, most though not all probably from 1967-73, and no need for argument about exact placings as long as we all agree that Stormcock is incredible. Why don't they play this on the radio like "Bohemian Rhapsody" i simply do not understand. Well, maybe i do understand. None of them are as intelligent as Roy.) PS Genevieve is my cat.
This track, with Jimmy Page on lead guitar, is the highlight of an album that isn't as good as it thinks it is - and definitely not as good as Sophisticate Beggar or Flat Baroque.
