After 20 years in Slovenia down to -25, also having worked in the extreme cold of Russia -54, my go to are a pair of Salomon Super Mountains and a couple of pairs of Alpina Pure. Both are low cut and the Alpina's are made locally and super quality as are Salomon. I always have a pair of gaiters handy just in case. Again your video is great advice and timely.
Great video, ive worn boots for many years, used to use lowas and meindl mostly, the meindl's survived everything I could throw at them, in the uk and overseas, Ive been lucky that ive found bates boots and found the fit and function to be the best for me personally, had a ministry of justice job dealing with prisoners and getting them covered in every kind of bodily fluid imaginable or the unpleasant task of trying to hose blast an all day breakfast off them, these boots have taken everything, they do have goretex versions although I haven't bothered with those ones, they have been submerged and kept me dry, every couple of years i buy a new pair even though I don't have to, they still polish up good, the sole does wear down but they are still wearable, ive basically bought most of the bates catalogue now for variation and for police/prison etc use, I couldn't recommend a better boot, unless your establishment issues you those horrendous rubber boots, good luck Also used altbergs, great boots, Salomon and Merrells, sadly Merrells dont feel comfortable or seem to last anymore, could just be me, and ive had similar results with magnums only lasting a few months, once again great video and although first time commenting, I'm a big fan of your work, thanks
Great choice. I’ve always used the Solomon quest. For last 2 seasons I’ve enjoyed the Hoka Kaha goretex. And for urban use I now use a retired pairPuma gore tex running trainers with Puma grip outsole. It has fantastic weight and superb grip on tarmac and light trail. It’s a bit low cut so use have to be careful of ingress into the shoe.
Alt-Bergs, great service, great boots. If you go in to the shop in North Yorkshire the foot measuring and and advice are well worth it. Have worn them in many arduous environments.
Great video, I'm looking for a new pair of boots for hunting and fishing at the moment. I would have had another pair of what iv got but they've been discontinued. Those Salomon boots look just right 👍🇬🇧👍
Being a Scot and having had many pairs of boots for multiple seasons, I've had the Rocky boots and found they are warm but also their soles had terrible grip in winter conditions..I've since replaced the Rocky with British army surplus Iturri cold wet weather issue boots, they have much better grip in the cold/snow/mud, they're significantly cheaper than Rocky too, light use surplus go for about £50, I've got 3 pairs, none of which cost more than that including an unworn pair
Had some Danner recon boots for about 20 years - really good quality boots very warm and well waterproof but I made the mistake of wearing them when labouring for a brickie and the cement killed them. Recently got some Haix a German boot from an army surplus on eBay they were £50 and have been used but I don't know what they used them for as the really fine tread on the soles was still pristine. They didn't even have a crease across the front. Vibram soles really warm gore tex upper.
Using a pair of grisport gamekeeper at present, seem very reasonable for £130 could do with an upgrade on the insoles, had Lowa hunter extremes in past and they were good, but about twice the price of the gamekeepers
Highly suspect of any new Salomon boot. When my Quest 4D GTX2 boot wore out after 8yrs I bought the latest Quest version, and I was very disappointed with the quality/construction/fit. The rubber toe cap came already separated from the boot. The best were made in Croatia, and the new are made in China. I don't know if all Salomon boot models have gone to China, but I would be checking before buying.
@ the first thing that was readily apparent was the fit difference. Size 11 of old pair was perfect. Size 11 in new pair were too big. It was a big let down since the old Quest was THE boot for military/SWAT use. I couldn’t find the old version in stock anywhere, so I went Lowa GTX mid.
@@GolfMike09 I still have a pair of Hawkins boots from the 70's, they're in perfect condidtion but then they've hardly been used. Berghaus all the way, they just last and last despite being used in the most arduous conditions for years.

Great video describing what they're good for. I'll definitely check out the Rocky boots..seem well priced and rock solid.

Sorry to hear you had issues. I never have. As a side note, these were made in Cambodia.

@@flickthenick Its a statement. I wasn't surprised about it.
BTW, Salomon boots don't last that long as the stitching frays, Berghaus all the way...
@@flickthenick I have worn Salomons for years. Never had an issue. Never tried Berghaus.
@@thatgearguy My experience too, as a mountain runner Solomons have always lasted at least twice as long as other brands such as Hoka, Puma and Nike.
Had my Salomons since 98, stitching looks ok to me still. Unless they have changed where they are made since then.
