I was staying in a hotel in L.A. a few years ago, and beside the main elevators in the lobby, there was a plaque that said, "these elevators were used in the filming of James Cameron's 1994 film 'True Lies' with Arnold Schwarzenegger." Arnold riding the horse through the hotel and into the elevator to chase the terrorist is one of my favorite over-the-top action scenes of the 90s, and I was thrilled I got to use the same elevator.

I made a slight error in my True Lies review. Jamie Lee won a Golden Globe and a Saturn award not a BAFTA for her performance in the film. She won a BAFTA for Trading Places. Nominated for a BAFTA for A Fish Called Wanda.

I think the harrier effects in this film are some of the best I've seen on film due to how well they've held up, compare it to a similar scene in Die Hard 4.0 & I still think this film pulled it off better.

For an action/secret agent/James Bond spoof - True Lies is still today pretty damn epiq. I loved it from the start to the end. In particular when it "slows down" and you get the whole Arnold/Helen storie where we almost forget about the terrorists - then BAM here they are again and we're back in action-land. A bit like a cartoon but in the best possible way. James Cammeron has always been an amazing craftsman. He knows how to cut and edit a movie as well as pacing and rythm. True Lies is no exception :-)

It does take terrorism seriously, but it gives them moments of humanity. It’s not like the terrorists are cracking jokes, they’re deadly serious. It’s a well rounded movie in my opinion. Focusing on his marriage as well as the action was absolutely necessary, if they hadn’t, then we wouldn’t have gotten classic Bill Paxton firing on all cylinders.

James Horner recycled a lot of motifs across many movies. You'll hear them in Wolfen, Wrath of Khan, Aliens, True Lies, and to a lesser extent the Rocketeer, Willow and others. Not that this is a bad thing. But once you recognize them in one or two of his films, you will hear them in everything he ever did.

One of my favorite films of all time. It’s damn near perfect. So rewatchable.
I would take it to a isolated island with me and never get bored. I think it might be Cameron’s best work. Too bad Arnie ran for governor and 9-11 happened otherwise a sequel was that close to getting green lit.

    Some quick thoughts:
    1. Jamie Lee Curtis is just arch-perfect.
    2. Tom Arnold is excellent.
    3. Charlton Heston is brilliant and hillarious.
    4. Bill Paxton is perfect.
    5. Grant Heslov shines really bright in a relatively small role.
    6. Art Malik is nailing his performance of the villain.
    7. Arnie performs really well and is funny as never before / since.
    8. The camera "low battery" scene kills me everytime I see it.
    9. The striptease scene holds up even today and is really very sensible to both male and female audiences. Arnie's recorder malfunction is timed perfectly.
All in all, this movie is amazing in being action-packed / ridiculous and funny at the same time.
    Thumbs up :-)

@Oliver Harper, thanks for this nice analysis. I just realized something and its a bit of deja vu. The restroom scene in True Lies; it echos in many aspects to the T3 restroom scene done almost 10 years later. The thing is the scene in True Lies is all practical. It is so honest and real when juxtaposed to the CGI way of doing things with the digital restroom in T3. Computers have their place but clearly, when practical scenes are superior to CGI, what is the point then with using CGI? Sadly, Hollywood cannot answer this conundrum to my satisfaction.

“He was in his late forties, so it’s to be expected that he can't take part in most of the stunts.” What? Tell that to Jackie Chan, Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, or for that matter, anyone who prioritizes staying really active “later” in life. Jeez. And nuclear is pronounced “new klee er” not “new kyew ler” . Other than that, another great, fun review. Love this stuff.

Another great review of one of my favourite action movies Oliver. I think it's ridiculous that this, and The Abyss are still unavailable on Blu Ray. I think it's to do with the fact that these days Cameron is totally immersed Iwith those bloody Avatar sequels. And refuses to take the time out to contribute to putting together a decent blu ray package for both movies.

The Bridge scene is not a minitutre it was shot on the old Seven Mile Bridge in the Keys while it was being demolished. That is why it looks so real when they blew it up. Because they really did blow up a section of the old bridge.

It's odd regarding the obvious stunt double, because many of those moments are moments that Arnold still would have been able to do. Pretending to get punched by the big guy in the bathroom, sliding a bit down the snow while firing, running down the snow etc. I don't get why Arnold wasn't used, and it's one of the issues I have with this film. Other than a few goofy moments that don't always work, it's easily one of Arnold's best films, probably in his top 3 best action films, but that obvious stunt double annoys me to no end. It's so blatant, I wish they'd go back in now for a more natural remaster, and digitally place Arnold's Tasker face onto the stunt double.

I've loved this movie since I first saw it in early 1995 when I was 9 even back then when I didn't know half the shit that was going on not to mention I was still not completely fluent in English yet, I was close but even if I was fluent I'm sure just as much would've went over my head...I know superlatives like Masterpiece or Legend is thrown Alot and most things or people it's said about dont deserve it but I don't use words like that unless I absolutely mean it and I ABSOLUTELY MEAN IT WHEN I SAY THE FILM IS A MASTERPIECE!!! I mean if u love Ahnuld as much as I do I can't imagine u not thinking something similar or at least loving it...at that time he was my favorite actor and he remains one of my all time favorites in my top 5 almost certainly and no question in my top 10..even movies that are admittedly pretty crappy like Collateral Damage I still love because Arnold cant really do any wrong in my eyes...Jesus man even when I didn't know half(or more)of what was going on I absolutely adored this movie and man when I got older and understood everything that was going on my love for it grew by like 10x ...it's one of the funniest movies or just anything I've ever seen and its all effortless..it doesn't feel like anyone is really trying it just comes natural...just everything from the comedy to the action to the romance and the whole situation with Harry and Helen and their marriage falling apart..Jesus man I $#it u not that scene with Helen doin that striptease for Harry in that thong with that flawless body had my heart pumpin and my nether regions doing things I was mostly confused about and almost 30 years Jamie Lee Curtis is still so damn hot I mean not quite as much in real life anymore but in that movie? I'll just say a female looking that damn good is all the woman I'd ever need...then we got Tom Arnold's crazy ass and that line is something I've never forgotten especially when there's been times where I've felt I might be taking my girl for granted..."she's a flesh and blood woman and youre never there" I absolutely loved Tom Arnold in this movie along with Bill Paxton(rip bruh I love that dude) and his crazy lies and antics...but not just the screenplay is classic, as usual James Cameron is on point with some truly amazing direction, some amazing action scenes ..that scene with Harry crazy ass actually tryna jump a gap at least 150 feet with a Horse? Heh heh the stuff of legend..let me stop here cuz im really going on and on and I could keep going..the critics though I usually don't care what they think I love this movie so much I really think it deserved much more praise from critics but I've never talked to anyone about this movie and them say I didn't at least like it and the user ratings on Google and IMDb seems to show I'm far from the only one who absolutely adores this movie it really is one of my all time favorite films in any and all genres and after T2 and then this its where I started being on the look out for anything by James Cameron..no doubt about it one of the absolute greats in film of all time..its just too bad he didn't do more films though of course I respect it but by time hes done with avatar i just hope he gives a couple more before he retires but with this masterpiece along with T2(especially T2) the first Terminator, Aliens and extra especially Titanic he's done more than enough cuz they're all essential imo..I love Avatar and the second one was much better than I thought they'd be but they're not the absolute classics the other films I mentioned are...I have absolutely no complaints about True Lies ..like I said earlier I Adore This Movie..now it you'll excuse me I'm going to check out that striptease scene again..man when Harry dropped that tape recorder that wasn't in the script, that was Arnold Poppin a boner on set and as good as she looks I absolutely can't blame him
