The biggest mistake I made was trying to use Godot as if it was just Unity with a different logo. It's not. An axe and a chainsaw can both cut down a tree, but if you try to swing a chainsaw like an axe, you will be very disappointed when it breaks. The more I learn about Godot and how it works, the more its differences make sense, and the nicer it is to use.
That's a great point, and definitely represents how I handled things. Making assumptions and trying to find the right way of doing it, rather than just...learning how to do things in the first place. Also, thanks for watching! Your video was an inspiration to make this video in the first place😁
My favourite thing about Godot is also the main reason I stick with it, instead of giving you every system you would need, it gives you all the building blocks to making just about any system you can imagine. Which is especially good for me personally because making the systems is what I enjoy most :P
I have started on Godot in the week Unity fucked up, and since I've been very happy and productive on it. My project is a Isometric 3D game, which I plan to finish in about 1 year
@@TheShelfman btw, this is the latest update I recorded about it. It's still pretty much with prototype look and feel, but I'm already working on the level design and defining puzzles, etc. Still a long way to go, but I'm pretty happy so far ruclips.net/video/q4ytII3HHlg/видео.html
This video was a great overview about this whole goofy situation, will definitely recommend this video to anyone getting into game dev to understand these points. Awesome editing as always :D me when 1:52 on second monitor 😳
haha yah i should've been more specific with my timestamp 😅 twas refering to the suggestively shaped... ornament? idk it just seemed fun, much like the moment when you turned into bread and breaded all over the bread (i am very funny)
@@TheShelfman it has events.. but like... there's literally something called signals as well. It's a part of the Timeline package, but you can use it outside of timeline
@@AIAdev I have heard of and used events but never knew about signals. Would love a quick video on what it is and when to use it or how it improved your game!
Honestly forgetting about it being open is very relatable. I have this constantly with Unity and Adobe Software 😂 But since I knew I wanted to make this video, I actually paid attention to it!
I agree. It requires a lot of time to learn a new engine. That's also part of the reason I don't wanna go fulltime on this one. I kinda just want to keep making games😂 Also...I will remember this😤
@@TheShelfman Yeah, honestly it is really great for a free engine, it is just sad that they want to capitalize it so much. But anyways I've been using greenfoot lately because of school and we use it to learn java and I miss a lot of features from unity, especially things like time.deltaTime lol
Great video! And interesting to hear your thoughts on it all! I'm pretty much in the boat of "ooo Godot looks cool and pretty...but I don't have time to learn this" Maybe in the future 😅
Started using Godot after the Unity debacle. Its pretty nice but i found there were a number of missing or half complete features. I think it will be great with more time to bake but for now I'm back to Unity and letting Godot cook some more. Maybe Godot 5 will be the one 😺
I decided to switch to Unreal Engine, and i'm doing a horror game of a lenght of 30 minutes, i do dev vlog (but in french, cuz, i'm French, u know..) for me Godot will be nice, but it's too early
Oh yeah definitely. That's what I do. But I like making a sprite sheet (for example with the trash) and if you can't manually slice, that could get awkward. Sure, I could've changed the original sprites, but the feature would be really nice
I was so ready to jump ship. It's so frustrating. I have so many years of Unity knowledge and to just throw all of that away is utterly frustrating. I have done this in my day job as a web developer for years (had to switch javascript frameworks like a dozen times in my career ughhhh). I don't mind learning tools, but when I'm trying to make game dev a source of income it starts becoming clearer to lean into my strengths for the sake of game quality. At the same time I feel like I'm letting Unity win by getting away with murder as I crawl back to the same company that I lost trust in. But tutorial purgatory is so much worse of a fate, so Unity I'm crawling back. But I'll still do some smaller side projects and jams in Godot so eventually I can take a step away if I want.
How has your experience in Godot been?
Also, don't forget to check out *gamedevrocket.com* and use code *_SHELFMAN30_*

Both engines heavily utilize components in a similar fashion, they're not identical but they're similar
Been using Godot for half a year now, and I am absolutely never going back to Unity.
Nice!

Great to see you return to Godot and really put in some time to understand it. Can't wait to see what other projects you make in it!
Thanks! Yeah excited to learn more in the future 😎

I started learning scratch. Porting my game from Unity into it has been super easy.
PS. Unity also has signals.
Scratch Mana Valley would be GOTY material.
I mean yes. Events. But still, this was a new experience for me😭

greg was spinning with joy
It's the happiest I've ever seen him
I had the same experience 😂 Great video!
Thanks! Yeah godot is quite something 😂
Well that's an interesting video!
Thank you!
I've had Godot open for 50 hours too . . . using it for 50 hours? ummmmmmmmmm . . .

50 hours learning Godot? But the video is only 5 minutes long?
The other 49 hours and 55 minutes will be part of a special documentary. Uncut dev time with a solid amount of tears
Greg's Mess is gonna be a lot of fun!
I'm so excited to properly get started on that😁
I like Godot but found that I didn't have the time to learn a brand new engine and start again.
Loved the video, as always, Geordie!

Thanks for making me realize I have a new pet peeve: people holding lav mics like a handheld mic... 🤣
Lollll
It just doesn't sound as well if I put it on my shirt/sweater😂 Not sure why.
But I also really like holding something in my hands when talking!
I haven't watched the video yet, but I want to say that the preview is very beautiful
Thank you!
I think I'll use unity honestly, obviously it is not really ideal, but I am not planning gamedev as a career and just learning C#, great video tho!
That's definitely fair! Unity is a great engine

I'm going to be using unreal engine because im starting to make 3d games and amazing video man can't wait for the next!
Nice! Good luck! And thanks for watching 😄
cries in monster shopper :(
I know
I wanna talk about that game sometime in a video. Maybe figure something out. I love the idea, just struggling to make it happen
Relateable.
Yeah this is what I thought would happen to me if I tried it hahah, all good experice I asume though!

Exactly how I feel. It sucks, but learning a new engine, and spending so much time doing so, is just not a priority. I'd prefer to just make games🙃
