Yeah absolute god that guy. He would have been about 46 years old here. Lombardo is god. Haven’t heard a metal drummer like him ever since. Lombardo not only has speed, he has tonnes of groove too if you listen to his slower stuff on Seasons in the Abyss and South of Heaven.
For sure. I often argue with idiots on RUclips who say "Dave was good back in his day, but there's way better thrash metal drummers now". To which I say " Oh really - who? " Then they'll name some boring robotic overly-technical new school metal drummers who have no groove, feel, creativity or originality. Some people just don't have a fucking clue.
Frédéric Puglisi You right about that but it's not just the speed because you can always find a drummer with speed but he has speed plus something else that sets him apart from others. He has best fills ever and he still grooves even when it's fast.
axisT6 My bad man quick read guess I misunderstood sorry. Yea you are right I will say he is the best all around in my opinion. Favorite drummer of all time for me. Have you seen George Kollias? He is probably fastest I've seen but still like Dave better because like I said speed is only one aspect of drumming. Peace bro...
Lombardo's not the fastest drummer around. Yes,he has been a pioneer of extreme metal drumming, but it's not about the speed. It's RAW POWER. The pedal beaters are flying from heel to skin with super tight pedal springs, the whole drumkit is shaking, his body is in war mode like an engine in the redline. He's a BEAST.
He's one of the fastest drummers out there, even in his 50s. I've seen many drummers hit the 250bpm barrier but no one without triggers with full power. Again, he's a fucking beast.
@@Axilleac I crack up today when I see people barely touching the skins and cymbals. They can't play in a metal band without lugging around mics and a PA so they can amplify their drums to be heard enough! :) I grew up in the 70's and 80's. You had to play loud enough to be heard in the band and also to get a good sound in the studio.
I've been covering Slayer on drums since the mid 90s and I always rated this one of the hardest to play physically. It doesn't let up. Dave is a full stroke player. No little taps, these are sledgehammer hits. These new triggered extreme metal drummers are very good no doubt. It's the next level I suppose. But I've got triggers and for me I can play stuff with them I can't quite manage as fluidly on pure acoustic. The triggers DO make SOME things easier. For me the new wave of extreme drummers are like a modern F1 engine. Amazing in their own right. But Dave is the previous generation and for me; give me a big block V8 thrashing away any day. #oldschool.
YES! You can REALLY hear Tom's bass throughout this recording. It's very rare (though there are some times that his bass stands out) to hear the bass on most SLAYER recordings. Whether it's on one of the albums, live show recording, official video or even when I'm at a concert. I know, there are better bassists than him out there but, he deserves more credit than people give him and I think that's a big reason why. You can't sound good if you can't be heard at all. He sounds good HERE on this video!
Kou Yang hot sun in uk england lmao. 90% of uk festivals I have been to in the uk has always been in the rain and mud with some sunny outburts lol Saw slayer at hellfest in 40 degrees celcius sun and crowd was way more up to it. This festival is a indie rock/mainstream fest so most of the crowd was probably like wtf am I watching lol
Thank you Tom for the years of screaming and keeping my devil's horns rocking!!! so glad I could see them in 94 when Tom could still thrash the hair around violently.
This is actually one of the saddest songs I've ever heard in my life. Listen to what he is talking about. Aborted babies give a silent scream when they are being torn apart in the womb.😥😭💔
No matter what drummer plays this song or how beat for beat perfect they play it, absolutely no one will ever play it like this only dave lombardo had the SLAYER sound in his blood and they never sounded quite right when he they were without him,
Little did we know that we were watching slayer at the absolute best they ever could be , but its a time when all the bad vibes and shit that Dave and Kerry had , had faded over time and they were all doing it and playing that good because they were enjoying being slayer again (original 4) obviously they were making monkey But its crazy how much slayer had a massive 2nd wind at a time when things had gotten relatively quieter for slayer, compared to the absolute second awakening they has when we all heard new slayer songs with Dave Lombardo back on the throne, AMAZING! SO GLAD I GOT TO SEE THEM IN THE beginning, BUT IT SOUNDED SO MUCH BETTER WHEN THEY WERE OLDER AND sober.
This is my first comment. This song is my best Slayer's fav shit. Fuckin aggressive, hard & heavy !! Kerry & Jeff's guitar and Tom's base are fuckin good. Of course, Dave's drums too. All is fuckin great !! Nothing will be better than this. No look−alike of them. That's impossible !! Anyway, sorry for Jeff's death & their breakup. Once more, wanna see their performance. Fuckin king of Heavy Rock & Thrash Metal, fuckin Slayer. See you !!
Bloody love this song, and yeah Paul Bostaph has been a great drummer for Slayer on and of through the years. Dave Lombardo on the other hand set the record for what Slayer's sound would be remembered for. unfortunately the business kills the chemistry.
Slayer's full original lineup is there, you can hear Tom's bass, his vocals sound great and you have Dave on drums who absolutely destroys Paul and they look bored as hell I'd literally sell my soul to have been able to see Slayer's original lineup
Still one of the most intense displays of double bass ever.
Best double bass ever recorded
The godafather of double bass does that shit like nothing in his 50 still kicking ass
Chris Juarez he's a better drummer at 50 than he was in his 20s
That drum kit had to smoke 2 cigarettes after that pounding

Tom’s bass is absolutely monstrous here

Agree about the speed. But no one has the power at the same time as the speed as Dave. No one.
May not be no one else can do the combos that he does watch him he is all over the place
Always thought this was an underrated song in their catalogue. Great stuff.
After Jeff Hanneman died and Lombardo was fired from his band this song is history man. Last show was 2012
Came here to mourn the loss of Jeff but was totally taken aback by Dave. Holy FUCK does he beat the shit out of his skins. Insane.
Dave rules
fucking right he does big time
Lombardo was the star of Slayer. King and Araya were cheap asses and didn't want to pay him what he's worth. I won't support the current lineup!
Same. I miss this lineup
Dave was the only one who didn't mess up the song, wish there was a drum cam.
