  • Anyone who has watched my channel for very long, know that there are 3 vintage baseball cards that I've wanted for the last 35 years. Well, I finally got one of those cards, and I got it in a trade!! In this video, I walk you through the process of how I made the trade and the background behind what happened. The 1954 Ernie Banks, the 1948 Yogi Berra, and the 1957 Brooks Robinson are three cards that I've wanted since I was ten years old. The steps that took place to allow this trade to take place are pretty amazing, and I detail the entire process and share the long awaited card that has been added to my collection.

    Congrats, Graig! Brooks Robinson is well beloved and respected in Maryland, but also one of those great players, who no one can really say anything bad about. And of course; the Brooks Robinson 1957 Topps is a great one. I really like the image, too. I think the '57 Topps set is a bit underrated. But for collectors that love HOF rookies. That is a premier set.

    I love that there was no mention of “comps”. Just honest negotiating between two parties that had something the other person wanted. This is how trades (AND sales) should go. We shouldn’t be subject to the amount the last guy got. We don’t know if he was selling because he needed money to pay for something else or was simply desperate. Why should the next guy’s trade or sale be subject to the previous guy’s set of circumstances? The right answer is it shouldn’t.

    Awesome! The biggest takeaway from the entire video/story is the hunt. The hunt for that one specific card which finally popped up for this guy had to be an insane feeling. As you said, you would be ok with any Peckinpaugh card because it satisfies your collection need. To need a very specific card that can be anywhere in the world and it ends up being in a youtube video that you watch is unbelievable. Lol, its hard to comprehend the odds on finding that one card.

    I think trying to decide who got the better deal misses the point. As collectors we frequently assign value to things that doesn't necessarily match their actual value. Both people got cards that meant more to them than the other person.
    As collectors I think you both could imagine what it would mean to the other person to acquire these cards. Neither of you was "gouging" the other. I'm guessing if the Peckinpaugh wasn't a part of your Captans set you wouldn't have asked much for it.
    As a collector I look at monetary value as "this is what it will cost me to acquire this card." In a trade I'd LIKE them to be in the same ballpark but "losing" some monetary value is acceptable to me. Acquiring some cards would actually have more value to me than "what I could get for it at auction." In fact, if that weren't the case auctions wouldn't work. A given card will be more valuable to one person than another. Or any sale. The item always has more value to the "buyer" than the "seller". A "trade" is just a non-monetary exchange.

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  Месяц назад
