Thanks, a very informative review, which I used to refresh my memory on receipt of a new BT 1.0 Smart Hub. I'm impressed that the app shows all six discs. I have a successful installation with four discs, which I thought was the maximum. One small point: as you have no doubt discovered by now, as a last step you need to go into the settings for your hub/router on a web page on a device using your network, using the IP address and the admin password, and disable the wi-fi signal. Otherwise a spurious wi-fi signal will be transmitted (the original one with the hub), which may confuse your network's users or devices. The "ignore this network" message you received from your mobile phone during setup of the app applies to your phone only. Apologies if you have covered this point elsewhere. By the way, to install the discs with the new hub I just turned off them, connected the LAN cable from disc 1 to the new hub, switched them on again and it all reinstalled by magic! No changes whatsoever were needed to the app. Impressive!
One really solid benefit of this technology is that once you have the network setup and your devices connected, if you decide to change ISP or buy a new router you do not have to revisit every device to reconfigure it.
Paul Wilkinson No, not at all. I am actually using this outside of the U.K. at the moment using a european ISP with no problems at all. I have added more discs since moving house, from 3 to 5, using the native ISP router without a hitch. If you install the mesh now before you move, as long as you plug in the primary disc into your new router will be good to go without having to reconfigure all your Wi-fi devices. Good luck with the move!
Brilliant video very interested in getting these.. will follow you in dropping my power convertor plugs I've got at the momment.. got one room in the house which keeps dropping and switching over to 4G
Thanks Tony, I'm really happy with them. The powerline plugs served a purpose (and still get me Wifi in the garage about 60' from the house), but these are perfect 👍😁

Thanks for this video its really helpful. One question, with this setup, does it act as one network or is it like extenders when you have to connect to the closest extender to get a good signal?
Nope, one network and as you move around, your device will switch to the best signal. You can just name it the same as your existing network with the same password and you don't have to change any of your devices then either
I'm getting this installed tomorrow in a really long bungalow. Looks a lot wider than your house (even though yours house is gorgeous) Bt installing whole of home WiFi. Now you've got me worried as i'm only getting 3 disks!! But have told them from day one how long the bungalow is!! Hope it goes well else BT are going to be in serious trouble with me. Thanks for the Vid though really enjoyed it. Hope your arm has recovered now?
Thanks for the compliment. I bet you will be fine with three discs, my issue was the thickness of the walls and the silver backed insulation between the floors. But, the beauty of this system is, if you wanted to add to it in the future, you can.
great video, really helpful, i didnt realise it dumped your primary wifi box which is a shame as I use a Time Capsule. Hopefully it still allows all 4 of the network cables to be plugged into the Time Capsule and I don't have to buy another switch.
One of the 4 ports on the back of your router has to take the first disc so that will drop you down to three unfortunately. You can still leave the Wi-Fi switched on on your Router but I turned mine off just to stick with the Whole Home network. Glad the video helped though.
Just connect the BT disc to your ISP supplied router. The time machine can still hang off your ISP router as most routers have 3 or 4 ports. You will have to reconfigure your TimeMachine not to be a router or especially not to be a DHCP server.
BT must of done another update as when i go into "see connected devices" there is no speed listed. i got 6 discs yesterday and have followed your tutorial to the letter. really really good pal, to the letter precise and not some whiney 14 year old American doing it either. Cheers
Hi Jay, glad you liked the tutorial and yep, far from a whiney 14 year old Yank 😁👍. I've just checked the speed thing, I've got the latest update and if I go into the disc my phone is connected to, then connected devices, then my phone, then scroll right to the bottom and the speed is the last one after the signal strength. See if you can find it again (just checked it for the speed of my PC and it's showed up as well)
all but 1 disc has turned red buddy, the main one is ok but the other 5 wont get past red at all, provong to be a bit of a pain to reconfigure, do you have any reccomendations?
Hi & thanks for video👍. Just one question - am I right in thinking you only need to plug Ethernet cable in initially to get them to connect then unplug it & put somewhere in house with just a power supply & not power & Ethernet? Cheers
Yes, pretty much so, except the first one that is connected to the router needs to stay connected via Ethernet all the time, all the others just need power once they are part of the network. You can actually use the ethernet connection on the others to connect non wireless things like a printer etc.
That is a great review! Just one question - the Lounge disc after setting up all other disks, must it be connected to the main router via LAN cable or just the power cable will do?
Hi Jimmy, yes the first disc needs a LAN connection to the router (as it's right next to the router I have turned the wifi off on the router). If you get the latest BT Smart Hub 2 and the black discs as a package from BT, you don't connect any discs to the router though.
@@nicholasbreakspearschool7194 Hi, yes, the first disc needs to be connected to the router. Any disc after that is connected to that first disc over Wifi. You can turn the Wifi off on the router when you have finished and just rely on the BT discs.
Great review, well done. I'm lucky enough to get 140mb down and 35mb up with BT FTP. Prices on 3 pack mini discs now down to circa £75. Do you think I would get 100+ around my whole house. (Small 3 bed terrace). I also have a pub shed about 50 metres at bottom of garden. Currently on Powerline but quite slow. Will these reach do you think? I could place one in kitchen window in eyesight of shed.
Yep, great transmit speeds with this system (and stop bragging about the download you get 😁😁😁👍, jealous.....) You could try to come out of one of the discs into the main powerline somewhere else in the house and see if that improves the speed to the shed if the disc itself doesn't work from the kitchen
Thanks for review I have been considering this, however thinking if I should wait for the WiFi 6 version. Also... I suggest you change your mesh WiFi password... you've shared some information you shouldn't do publicly, especially as there's a photo of your house and device mac addresses. A local hacker may get bored and have some fun.
Thanks for that (password already changed). Latency and speed are fine for the household with this. Latency is 24 and we only get a max of 60MB download coming into the house on a mobile data router and it handle that fine. faster still when transferring between devices when backing up etc
Hi there,,nice vid,,I was thinking to get this one as well but the reviews online are a mixed bag,,nice to see that somebody honestly and unbiasedly reviewed these. so basically my house isn't that big, but it is quite tall. The wifi in my bedroom (which is the farthest point from the router) is pretty slow and choppy,,2.4ghz is ok but the 5ghz band is almost non existent. I've got a pretty decent linksys router btw but it's not enough. I was thinking to get this one (the 3disc version) but not sure. Powerlines or mesh? Hmm,,no idea,,,
Over the last 15 years, I've tried all sorts of ways to get WiFi around the house, The most successful up to these where TP-Link powerline adaptors (which I still use one of to take the WiFi to a camera in the garage, 80' from the house). This BT Whole Home setup has ticked all of the boxes though. Right across a funny shaped house, with all the problems that the structure can throw at me, I get uninterrupted (unlike the powerline adaptors, which ultimately led to me buying these) fast, WiFi with a great app to monitor and get the best set up. I hope the three pack works out for you. 😁👍
@@Cagefighter these will work with any router. The first disk has to be connected direct to the router and replaces it's Wifi so you need at least two for any improvement. Best thing I've bought though
Hey just came across this video. Great informative video. I’ve got sky Q that doesn’t play well with others. If I switch to BT internet & whole home, will this cause massive issues with Sky Q mini boxes?
I've got sky q + 3 mini's all running on this set up. I've had it running off this with power line extenders and without. Always find Sky Q to be tempremental no matter what the setup.
Great video. One question, i'm also installing a six disc network. Do each of the three additional discs need to first be connected to the router via network cable before placing in their locations?
Impressive. Do you think it would deliver speeds of close to 1000Mbps with the whole FTTP rollout that is happening and I am curious as to how the Triband BT Premium Home Wifi would perform? It says on the BT website that the Premium has a dedicated backhaul channel. Do you need more than 3 then for large dwellings? How does this fare against the Amplifi Alien?
hi Clough, what happens if you were on your iPhone FaceTime video call and move around the house, would the call drop every-time you move from room to room for few seconds then reconnect, or would it remain seamless?
@@CloughReviews i actually did get these to try from BT a year ago or so, but had to return them for the very same reason. may be i didn't set up accurately; but i used to lose video connection temporarily moving from garden to the front of the house. both of which were covered, albeit by different disc.. Now BT are offering a guaranteed connection in a new deal with BT plus and are including similar discs but black this time for £5 extra monthly deal. i'm still in two minds to go through this again. any thoughts?
Hmmm, As I'm with BT, I would have gone for the Smart Hub 2 with the black discs but I need 6 to cover the house and BT will only give out up to 2 after the first 1 (I think) so 3 in total + the Hub as they work differently to the white ones. If you think you can cover the house with up to 4 units I'd go for it, it will take you three years to get to the price of a pack of three white discs. I have to say though, these have given me the best reception with absolutely no drop out compared to anything else I've tried since '98
No, that the internal Wifi speed. The bt speeds are rubbish. about 18mb download and 2.5 upload. So bad that 6 months ago I bought a Huawei router and put a Vodafone unlimited data SIM in it. Cheaper and faster 60MB down and 67MB up and 25 ping. Waiting for Starlink to get up and running now
Hi, thanks for video. My question is whether you absolutely have to turn off the main router wifi? I currently have the main router in a high window and it is talking to two extender plugs in holiday lets below across the garden. These work well and I see little point in replacing them. I want the whole house network for our actual house which has medieval six foot walls and very little wifi. Thanks.
Nope, you can leave the Wifi on on the main router if you want to. all it will mean is that anything that you have connected to it, will not be seen on the Whole Home app
does the lounge disc need to be hardwired ? as i thought you just connect to the router via cable then once set up cable is removed and disc placed where ever you want or best location
No, needs to be hard wired (I don't think the black ones do though). It doesn't connect to the router wirelessly, only the other discs, so the first disc has to connect via the Ethernet cable. If I remember correctly, the recommendation from BT is to turn off the routers wireless function once the discs are installed as well.
What is the difference between this and the mini whole WiFi? Picked up the twin mini from Curry's this afternoon but not sure if I should keep. Wanted it to serve between two houses. Two bed each. What would you recommend?
This one is a great extendable system, I think mini has a lower speed so may not be good for lots of users. Read this shop.bt.com/mini-sites/whole-home-wi-fi/
Thanks.. I have a chrome ultra cast.. Can I tell it to choose the 5ghz? In other words is it possible to rename the 2 bands so I can assign it to the 5gz? Thanks again..
No, you can't separate the bands, but your laptop should always connect to the fastest band (5Ghz if available). If it doesn't do it at the moment because you are too far away from the router and it defaults to 2.4 then that should be fixed when you get 5Ghz around the house because of the discs.
My problem is, when people directly connect to the Router it'll work fine for gaming. When i connect to a disc upstairs it'll lag & drop in speed. Is there a way to fix this?
Does it have to be over a certain speed?I live in a rural area but got bt fibre now get 20mbs download!but had extension done and got a lounge and bedroom with dead spots but not too far away would this work please?
The first disc needs to be connected to the router at all times, this is the one that communicates to the rest of the discs to make the mesh. You can turn the Wifi off on the router as this replaces it
What’s the difference between a WiFi extender and this disc? Or is it just BTs version of it. Because I have a shed and I use a tp link. I get 250m speed in the house and only get 30m through the tp link.
If only 😁. I'll never get more than 22 down and 4 up as I'm too far away from the exchange 😒. I get in the multiple hundreds 100's within the network on all my devices though, for backing up to the NAS etc.
Does one disc have to stay permanently next to the router? Also, does this system replace the routers signal or do we get signal from the router as well as the three discs?
Do you think it would deliver speeds of close to 1000Mbps with the whole FTTP rollout that is happening and I am curious as to how the Triband BT Premium Home Wifi would perform? It says on the BT website that the Premium has a dedicated backhaul channel. Do you need more than 3 then for large dwellings?
Hmmmm, lots of tech questions. I don't want to mislead you as my incoming Broadband is pants. The house network though is fantastic, the best I have been able to create since '98. For stats, I'd be happy to go off whatever BT are saying on the bumf they put out. My house is 60' by 19', two story and very, very thick external and internal walls. I have six of the discs and excellent coverage but if you are in a more compact space less would suffice
@@CloughReviews Thanks, that's interesting. So yes six discs should work wonders! What about the BT Premium Home Wifi discs though? Compared to the Home Wifi discs, the BT website says the Premium discs have Triband capability with a dedicated back channel for communication between the discs. So would that be better to buy for the FTTP rollout (the line speed can go up to 900Mbps)? Only thing is some of the customer reviews talk about some firmware issue, but would be great to see a professional review by yourself on the "BT Premium" discs?
Does not connect to best available disc. I.E. If I'm in bedroom it is staying connected to lounge disc and not to bedroom disk. Giving me speed of 10 in bedroom when my speed should be 70. Any pointers at all?
Ha, I have done now but only because it is in a different room. The disc was connected to a Sonos one speaker in the old room so no space for the printer. In saying that, I've put a additional hub onto the printer disc now so have about three things hardwired to one disc. You live and learn 😁👍
my extender turns purple literally every 1 hour for 1-2 minutes . so im disconnected from whatever i was doing like playing online games What should i do?
I hate the current over use of the word "super" in everything, we move closer to Orwells newspeak every bloody day! I am getting a smart hub 2 and one of the black discs installed on the 1st May, do you think the smart hub 2 will be as good as the Netgear x4s Nighthawk I use? I'm not keen on the idea of not being able to separate the 2.4ghz and 5ghz channels but I've been reading that this isn't possible on the smart hub 2....
Not sure about the Smart Hub 2 and the black discs Martyn, I'm presuming they will be a step up on the white ones from the go. Especially as you still use the smart hubs WiFi with them. Have got to say though if they are equal to these, they will be worth it. Trouble free, fast for internal transfer and backup and very configurable 👍
@@CloughReviews just for future reference, the smart hub 2 is the equal of the Netgear nighhawk x4s (I own the modem router version, model number D7800) but is has better signal strength and stability when used in conjunction with the provided disc. the smart hub 2 isn't even close to having the features of the D7800 which is unfortunate but the signal almost makes up for the lack of features.
I get 20/21 MBPS at best so dont use all the bandwidth that these provide. What I do get with them though is great bandwidth on the home network so good for backing up through the NAS etc. Also no drop outs or weak areas which is what I have been plagued with over the past 15 years with everything else I've tried.
Sorry for the late reply. The main router can still work on Wifi but I turned it off in all honesty so that I was just working off the disc network (for control and to see what was connecting etc)
@@CloughReviews It's ok don't worry, I have just received them and set them up, I asked the question because our to link cameras rely on that router and you have to change up addresses otherwise - great product better than any other mesh I have owned - gonna buy one more as we live in a house will walls 3m deep in some places (renovated barn conversion) Thanks!
I had the same issue but just set the disc network up with the same details the main router had, no need to change any device settings then. Ignore me if I didn't understand though 😁👍
I changed to EE's Fibre to the Cabinet this year and they supply seperate modem and WiFi router. Ethernet is a solid 140mb/sec but WiFi is patchy at best. Do I need to keep the EE router or just plug this straight into the modem?
@@CloughReviews Sorry I’m horrible with tech do these disc work with other internet providers? I’m with virgin media and the internet connection is horrible in my room
im looking at getting these do they all have to be in range of the main one or do they leep frog off each other. For instance could i have the main one and then one disk 25 feet away and then another 25 away from the second disk (50 feet away rom the main one??????
You can have them like you describe as long as each one can see the 'next one'. They work like a mesh, so connect to each other and not the first one only
You need to have the old router set up as that is what gives you your broadband connection. The Whole Home system just gives you a better WiFi network. When you have the Whole Home stem set up and working, just go into the sky router settings and turn the WiFi off on it. The Whole Home system works independently of the Sky WiFi and you don't need the two running at the same time.
I've got a stone built house so WiFi is terrible. I currently have network cables running from my router to two wireless access points. This works but signal drops out when moving around the house (eg FaceTime freezes, have to stay in same room). Can i replace my WAPs with these discs connected to router via the Ethernet cables?
I think I get what you mean. Do you mean Ethernet two to the Router. I would be tempted to have one at the end of the ethernet cable and put another 1 or 2 around that are Meshed wirelessly off that first one. if the first disc is connected via the cable into another room then you can utilise the WiFi from the router and not turn it off like I have. That will give you 4 access points if that would work in your house?
@@CloughReviews I guess what I'm really asking is do the discs need to be within wifi range of each other? As the signal gets very weak through my house and i have Ethernet in the walls it seems a shame not to utilise them. Perhaps I'm over thinking it!
No, I thought you may mean that. You connect the first one up to the router in the normal installation. If you have Ethernet points in different rooms I dont see any reason why you couldn't set each one up as the initial disc. Set all the SSID and Passwords the same and that should work. The only thing is I dont know what the hand off would be like when you are face timing moving around. If the worst happens and you dont like it, you can always send them back as faulty
In case anyone is interested, I've found out that what I was describing is called Ethernet backhauling, and these disks do support it, and it will give higher speeds in some cases, if you can get the wires around your house
Hi Cashan, The first replaces the WiFi from the router, the other 5 are all repeating mesh WiFi points so the WiFi around the house is pretty much as strong at the farthest point as it is next to the original BT Home Hub. Much better than the powerline extensions we had previously. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_mesh_network.
I have 6 discs around the house which works fine most of the time. However coverage outside in particular the gates (60-80ft) the Nest Doorbell works most of the time and Shelly1 as a gate controller is intermittent. Anyone suggest or use a repeater or outside booster that will work with this mesh? thanks
@@CloughReviews no not really. I have coverage in house and garage (BT discs) and my experience of wireline adaptors isn’t great as they are fussy about being on the same circuit. Besides that doesn’t really work outside. Probably need a weather proof AP but wondered if it would connect to the nearest BT home Wi-fi disc and act as booster
It's pointless having just one as it's plugged into your wireless router(unless you are plugging it into a standard router I suppose), so you won't get much additional range. Two would work fine thougb

i dont think you need one at the router? you can buy the router with just 1 disc, so why would you have one at router? i suppose my question is can i just use 1 upstairs and to connect to it, it is the same as my router name and pw?
Jim, two different systems. My Whole Home kit is working with the BT Home hub 6 (and will work with any other router). You need to start the Mesh network off by connecting one disk to the router. The next Gen of BT hub is the smart hub that comes with one black disk. With the black disk, it is compatible with the Smart hub so is already part of the mesh and BT will give you free add on disks to make sure you are covered (up to two additional I think). As an example, you can't combine white and black disks as they are not compatible. Hope that makes sense?
Clough Reviews ok so i am after a smart hub and one disc to help upstairs, will it all be under the same ssid as my smart hub and my phone just connects to the smart hub name but it connects to the disc next to my bedroom. I dont want different or more then one network name in the house i just want one network but with extended range to reach all of upstairs. Is this something i can do? Thank you for your great detailed answers.
If you get the Smart Hub 2 with one black disk (requires a premium of £5 per month), you can set the SSID up as the same as you have now and you don't need to reconfigure any of your devices. The SSID is the same no matter which access point also. "The new router is also being launched alongside a BT Complete Wi-Fi service that will be attached to their premium “BT Plus” packages (costs an extra £5 per month), which aims to “guarantee” you a strong WiFi signal “in every room” of your home by bundling the SH2 with a WiFi boosting Disc (like the repeaters you get with the BT Whole Home Wi-Fi kit). The disc itself remains the property of BT but the Hub becomes yours to keep as soon as you get it. However if one disc isn’t enough to achieve the stated outcome then BT will throw in another one at no extra cost (up to a maximum of 3 discs) and if that doesn’t deliver coverage to every single room then a bill credit of £20 will be offered."
I have a problem with 2.4Ghz things like smart plugs etc, these discs wont connect to them, apparently there is a way to shut off the 5GHZ, to get the 2.4Ghz then switch the 5GHz back on? I have a plusnet router which I can use for 2.4GhZ but that sort of defeats the object really.

You can still use your primary router just don't click forget old assign new divises on the new network which need the further range
Just connect the BT disc to your ISP supplied router. The time machine can still hang off your ISP router as most routers have 3 or 4 ports. You will have to reconfigure your TimeMachine not to be a router or especially not to be a DHCP server.
great video thank you
And thank you 😁👍
nice watch pal ive got the same one,im sure ive walked past your house a few times pal. i recognise it
Not cheap to have serviced 😂😂. Nice to wear though 👍
@@CloughReviews Hello great film. I have twin pack and a new router. Does it have to be connected to the router still?
Do you have to have wires from disc to disc? Or is it just cable from router to first disc?
Hi would these work in garden shed with power outlet ? Great review by the way thank you!
Thanks, yes, as long as the one in the shed can connect to the nearest one in the house, if that makes sense
Thank you for replying... I will definitely be buying this product because yours is the best review I’ve seen 👍
Great vid, but just a word of advice. Best not showing ip address and mac addresses etc on the vid for security purposes. 👍
I'm with virgin media, will these still work?
@@Cagefighter these will work with any router. The first disk has to be connected direct to the router and replaces it's Wifi so you need at least two for any improvement. Best thing I've bought though
Really good video, would this be the same for the bt minis?
Sorry Darren, not sure if that's the case
Hey just came across this video. Great informative video. I’ve got sky Q that doesn’t play well with others. If I switch to BT internet & whole home, will this cause massive issues with Sky Q mini boxes?
I've got sky q + 3 mini's all running on this set up. I've had it running off this with power line extenders and without. Always find Sky Q to be tempremental no matter what the setup.
Clough Reviews so is your main Sky Q box attached to your main disk through an Ethernet?
Clough Reviews .... and presumably all the minis have to be connected to the WholeHome network not your existing BT Wi-fi?
Great video. One question, i'm also installing a six disc network. Do each of the three additional discs need to first be connected to the router via network cable before placing in their locations?
Yes, it's a ball ache, but it 'just works' afterwords, with the occasional bit of maintenance. Good system 👍🏻
@@CloughReviews thanks so much for taking the time to reply, much appreciated. Your tutorial is excellent.
Could I use the Ethernet port on the back of the disc and connect it to like a console or pc
On every disc after the first one, you can youse the port as a connection. I use one for my printer in one of the rooms
Can you change from 5GHz to is it 2.6GHz as that has further coverage but not quite as fast!!
I'm pretty sure that it flips between them automatically for the best transfer and most stable signal.
How does this fare against the Amplifi Alien?
they are 2.4ghz so will get nowhere near Gigabit speeds
hi Clough, what happens if you were on your iPhone FaceTime video call and move around the house, would the call drop every-time you move from room to room for few seconds then reconnect, or would it remain seamless?
These are like the professional setups you get in offices, only for the home and DIYer. There should never be any drop as you move from one to another
@@CloughReviews i actually did get these to try from BT a year ago or so, but had to return them for the very same reason. may be i didn't set up accurately; but i used to lose video connection temporarily moving from garden to the front of the house. both of which were covered, albeit by different disc..
I have to say though, these have given me the best reception with absolutely no drop out compared to anything else I've tried since '98
out of curiosity, what bt package are you on to reach speeds of 900? I assume the new full fibre package?
Thanks
Nice Omega seamaster!
Ha, thankyou. Treated myself when I got married 😁

does the lounge disc need to be hardwired ? as i thought you just connect to the router via cable then once set up cable is removed and disc placed where ever you want or best location
How do I factory reset without going to into my app
What is the difference between this and the mini whole WiFi? Picked up the twin mini from Curry's this afternoon but not sure if I should keep. Wanted it to serve between two houses. Two bed each. What would you recommend?
This one is a great extendable system, I think mini has a lower speed so may not be good for lots of users. Read this shop.bt.com/mini-sites/whole-home-wi-fi/
If I buy one disc, does that have to be near the router or can I have it away from the router like up stairs in my room?
No, on this system, the first disc cat5's into the router and basically just replaces it
Great video.. Does it extend the 5gz band effectively? I need to extend my 5gz range.. Thanks
Yep, each disc does 2.4 and 5Gz
Thanks.. Makes sense..
My problem is, when people directly connect to the Router it'll work fine for gaming. When i connect to a disc upstairs it'll lag & drop in speed. Is there a way to fix this?
Not sure as I've not hit this problem. What is the signal strength when you are setting up for that disc
can i plug in a longer Ethernet cable from the hub to the main disk or does it have to be the one it came with. thanks
No, a longer one is fine 👍
Does it have to be over a certain speed?I live in a rural area but got bt fibre now get 20mbs download!but had extension done and got a lounge and bedroom with dead spots but not too far away would this work please?
No, any speed will be OK. I get about the same but as much as 900mb between discs and devises, so great for backing up.
Hi do we need to connect and live with cable first disc? Does it one of them connect with the cable to rooter all the time?
The first disc needs to be connected to the router at all times, this is the one that communicates to the rest of the discs to make the mesh. You can turn the Wifi off on the router as this replaces it
What’s the difference between a WiFi extender and this disc? Or is it just BTs version of it. Because I have a shed and I use a tp link. I get 250m speed in the house and only get 30m through the tp link.
It's a Mesh system, which helps with the max speed and the distance. Is the TP Link a powerline?
You should of got a smart hub 2 as well it is great . I get around 70 down and 18 up near the router and 50 down 15 up near the extender
If only 😁. I'll never get more than 22 down and 4 up as I'm too far away from the exchange 😒. I get in the multiple hundreds 100's within the network on all my devices though, for backing up to the NAS etc.
Clough Reviews oh no. I live close to the exchange and it is great 👍. Which area do you live in I live close to Newcastle
Out in the sticks, near Todmorden, 3 miles from the exchange and 1/2 a mile from the nearest cabinet.
I live in Antrim will I get good WiFi there
For the other discs do you need to plug the Ethernet cable in them?
No, the cable only goes into the first one from the router. Then with the others, you can use the port as an 'out'
Does one disc have to stay permanently next to the router? Also, does this system replace the routers signal or do we get signal from the router as well as the three discs?
Yep, first one stays connected to the router. I've switched off the router Wi-Fi as its not needed at all
Is there speed test built in to test speed on the wifi points directly to measure speed on each?
You can see the max speed in MB'sthat you can get from each disk (internal Wifi speed)
Is that not your device that is at issue?
Hi, after setting it up can you rename the SSID and change the password? Cheers
Yep, I just changed it the the original routers so that I didn't have to redo any devices
Clough Reviews Thanks
Does it look abit weired with your router and the disk right next to each other tho?
I've got the disc further away from the router and higher so you can't see them together.
when you have bought the discs .... do you have to pay BT extra too use them with the HUB
No, not at all. I use them on a Hauwei Router with a Vodafone mobile network
@@CloughReviews Thank you for replying mate
Why don’t you connect your non-WiFi printer to the back of one of the BT Disc’s?
Ha, I have done now but only because it is in a different room. The disc was connected to a Sonos one speaker in the old room so no space for the printer. In saying that, I've put a additional hub onto the printer disc now so have about three things hardwired to one disc. You live and learn 😁👍

From what I know of the 2.4 & 5, your devices will automatically switch to the best one anyway.
@@CloughReviews just for future reference, the smart hub 2 is the equal of the Netgear nighhawk x4s (I own the modem router version, model number D7800) but is has better signal strength and stability when used in conjunction with the provided disc.
the smart hub 2 isn't even close to having the features of the D7800 which is unfortunate but the signal almost makes up for the lack of features.
my area doesn't support superfastfibre it only goes upto 20mgbp per second
I get 20/21 MBPS at best so dont use all the bandwidth that these provide. What I do get with them though is great bandwidth on the home network so good for backing up through the NAS etc. Also no drop outs or weak areas which is what I have been plagued with over the past 15 years with everything else I've tried.
Hi there, when you have set these up did your main router still work? I presume it did because the light was blue?
Sorry for the late reply. The main router can still work on Wifi but I turned it off in all honesty so that I was just working off the disc network (for control and to see what was connecting etc)

You can have them like you describe as long as each one can see the 'next one'. They work like a mesh, so connect to each other and not the first one only
Clough Reviews amazing
will it work on sky bordband and do you need the cable in you main router?
Yep, no problem. The first disc connects into one of the free ports on the back of the Sky Router and creates a new WiFi network
Clough Reviews do you need to keep it in the old router?
@@CloughReviews thank you, you have been very helpful.
In case anyone is interested, I've found out that what I was describing is called Ethernet backhauling, and these disks do support it, and it will give higher speeds in some cases, if you can get the wires around your house
Is this 3 different WiFi’s or 3 routers to put around the house?
Hi Cashan, The first replaces the WiFi from the router, the other 5 are all repeating mesh WiFi points so the WiFi around the house is pretty much as strong at the farthest point as it is next to the original BT Home Hub. Much better than the powerline extensions we had previously. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_mesh_network.

@@CloughReviews no not really. I have coverage in house and garage (BT discs) and my experience of wireline adaptors isn’t great as they are fussy about being on the same circuit. i dont think you need one at the router? you can buy the router with just 1 disc, so why would you have one at router? i suppose my question is can i just use 1 upstairs and to connect to it, it is the same as my router name and pw?
Jim, two different systems. My Whole Home kit is working with the BT Home hub 6 (and will work with any other router). You need to start the Mesh network off by connecting one disk to the router.
The next Gen of BT hub is the smart hub that comes with one black disk. With the black disk, it is compatible with the Smart hub so is already part of the mesh and BT will give you free add on disks to make sure you are covered (up to two additional I think). As an example, you can't combine white and black disks as they are not compatible.
Hope that makes sense?
Sorry, mine is the Smart hub, the one with the black disk is the Smart Hub 2
@@CloughReviews i am an employee so i hoping to get this for free maybe, so i guess it will do what i need it to do.
You dont need those powerline adapters as your able to plug the printer into the back of the disc.
Cheers Aaron, that's how I've done it. I still use the powerline adaptors on some things though, like getting WIFI outside to the garage.
@@CloughReviews I use a Ubiquiti Networks Unifi System. 1x USG 4x Ubiquiti Nano HD and a 24 port switch and I bought the Draytek 130 performance. On the guest network of the Whole home wifi can you restrict the bandwidth on the guest network?
That's impressive, just had a look at the Unifi System. If I have had the foresight when I built the house 20 years ago, I would have run CAT cable all over the place and then fitting something like that would have been a breeze. Ah well, next time :-)
@@CloughReviews Our house is a new build so I just asked them to run CAT 6 wiring. Its disappointing when the cable isn't there and 20 years ago it was dialup 😂
Their neighbour must be laughing because now they have free WiFi
Can these be used in access point?
What do you mean?
@@CloughReviews My Virgin media hub 4 is still the main router and theses are there to connect to WiFi only
@@googlefriend7685 Yep, that's how I use mine. I turned off the Wifi on the BT Home hub and use the discs for WiFi but still used the hub as a router. You can use the discs after the first one as mini router also with the one Ethernet connection in the back. Probably put another mini router into those as well if you want to.
Do you need to pay it monthly
@@AbenaTinny Once you buy the discs, you can set them up with a router from any provider of Internet. Originally I had these with my BT Internet but then swapped the router and went with Vodafone, still worked perfectly👍🏻
Now £150 for 2... ON OFFER. Crazy.
Or you could of just purchased a couple of ubiquiti ap pro's
Not sure they would have given me the coverage or the control though....
all that radiation eeek
Love it, keeps my joints lubricated
Thick walls
Very, and long house
It’s pronounced eeethernet...
eeethernet, ethernet. tomatoes, tomatoes. I know but for some reason, I can't help but swapping between them. It's the pressure of being on camera 👍😁
If they wanted it pronounced as eeethernet they should have spelled it that way or added an hyphen. E-thernet instead of ethernet.
Hogarth no it is eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeethernet
Things like this got cleared up years ago when people became able to google 'how do you pronounce...'
A simple rule is, if it's not your word, then you pronounce it the way it was intended.
In this case it's E-ther-net not Eth-er-net
Worst wifi on the market buy something thats actually good and not trash BT stuff. Trust me it's a scam
Have to agree to differ. Best I've had, easiest to set up, no dropping and completely. controlable
Maaf ya allah hamba liat ini.
EEEEEEEEE-ther-net
not
Eth-er-net
Tomaaaato's Tomaayyyyyto's. I can swing either way, but Ethanol isnt EEEEthernol for example 😁👍
Useless system, too many bugs, and no support from BT once they have your money. Chuck it.
I must be 2 years into this by now, works great, best coverage I've had. Shame you haven't had the same experience
Does the BT system cope well with interference from neighbours WiFi? This could be Duncan’s issue. Clough looks like his home is very detracted so no neighbours WiFi causing interference
So the first disc has to stay wired to the router? Or can it be relocated after initial setup?
Nope, it needs to stay wired. Different with the black discs but with the white ones it needs to stay connected as this is what starts the network
