- Why Xhosa is the Hardest Language to Learn in Africa | Africa in 30 Seconds
Xhosa is one of the most difficult languages to learn because of its complex structure. It is spoken by 8 million people in South Africa and by 11 million people throughout Africa. Most of its speakers live in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng, and Northern Cape.It is one of the eleven official languages of South Africa. Xhosa has an extremely complex system of consonants. This is Africa in 30 seocnds, subscribe and see you again tomorrow.

Glad I'm xhosa
I see you haven't met the khoi-san people, they give xhosa the run of their money

Easy to learn if you are Bantu. Many Bantu peoples from Kenya down to all the regions of South Africa have languages that have common connotations of saying things. In Zambia you have Ngoni and Nyanja which has similar sounding words. In Malawi it would be Nsenga, Kenya has Swahili and so on. For many African people in the Southern parts of Africa it is easy to pick up certain words and learn the language quickly. In Zimbabwe, Ndebele would be the closest but ultimately, the click sounds are indeed the hardest to learn. My mother MHSRIP was Xhosa but we grew up in Zambia and she was always speaking Xhosa with her South African friends. My father was Lozi which is similar to Seswati (a language spoken in some parts of Swaziland and South Africa). I am not a fluent speaker of Xhosa but understand about 60-70% of it when it is spoken and I speak it quite basic. Most of family now live in South Africa and they have transitioned well and speak it fluently.
I suppose also that having been around many different languages in Zambia, I am able to pick up languages easily. The easiest I found was Japanese and Korean. French and German are easy to learn, so is Spanish, but I find the Swedish and the other Scandinavian languages easier to pick up. Just gifted, I guess. I went to Greece and had I stayed there a few months would have been forced to learn it quickly because no one messes around in Greece. They speak English but everyone just speaks Greek there…forgot to add that Nigerian languages for me are the hardest. Can’t get my ear round that. So, West Africa is out for me. And yet I picked up Japanese so easily which has surprisingly intonations of African sounding words. Looks like the world was one and spoke the same language at one point…
Wow amazing i would love to kiss someone who speaks many languages (a polygoth) one day ❤
I also think Korean sounds much easier than West African languages
@@Lulu-wv1nt Xhosa is not from West Africa, and has nothing to do with West African languages
Lozi is similar to Sotho-Tswana languages like SePedi, SeTswana and SeSotho
@@gideonmoseri4850 Lozi comes directly from siSotho. It was brought over Sebitwane, and the Bafokeng clan of the Kololo, who crossed the Zambezi river in 1838, moved into Western province Zambia, where they encountered and defeated the Luyi, who had arrived in the area from the Lunda Empire of the Democratic Republic of the Congo 200 years before. The Kololo ruled the Luyi for 25 years, until the revolt of Sipopa, who killed all the Kololo men, and married all the Kololo women to Luyi men. The Kololo women continued to transmit the Sotho language to their offspring, and hence the Lozi language, although it retrenched all the Rs from the Sotho language. The Kololo are the ones who named the great falls on the Zambezi river, Musi o tunya

more than 9 million, definitely more than 9 million check the most current stat
I used to love hearing the great Miriam Makeba singing ”The Click Song”… As a little black girl in America back in the 60’s, this was my first exposure to Africa! Love the clicking…how amazing, the diversity of language on the planet - so much of it right on the continent of Africa! 😊❤️🙏🏾 for sharing this!
Visit Africa to get that in your blood. I’ve been in England for over 30 years but I still have dreams of Africa. And see the ancestors in my dreams just watching. You can go anywhere, but those who you belong to are always watching after you. But that’s another story for another day. Stay blessed.

Absolutely.
We in namibia the khoekhoe language speakers have the same clicks as them

It is also spoken in Zimbabwe and Botswana
I really like it and am sure I can get it. Am from Namibia.
Beautiful creation ❤️🙏
Stay connected
Even Damara/Nama is also the hardest language to learn in Africa it has also the same clicks...
Where are my Namibians who will agree with me ❤
It's definitely way more difficult. It also has more clicks not found in isiXhosa.
Damara of /nama.way difficult
That one is worse.i used to travel to namimbia, I would tune to damara radio station for mo Dan 30 minutes or so.iv never understood a single word..click sound through out.i wld b laughing alone. I believe is da most difficult language in Southern A
The priest who baptised my 1st boy, John, in August 1982 at Saint Brigid's Church downtown Ottawa, Father Cosmos Mogela from Tanzania, doing his doctorate in political science a the University of Carleton in Ottawa speaks Xhosa famous for its clicks. :D
Ken, Toronto, CANADA
The clicks were adopted when after the Bantu migration to South Africa. The Khoi and San languages (which South African governments have and are actively trying to kill) are even more intense.
Alhamdulilah! That's what's up man.
Nice looking people wuth nice teeth. Speak crazy!😊
Wow, I just fell in love with this language. How do I get materials to learn this language. Any app available for me to learn this language? I will spend the rest of my life to learn how to speak this lovely sounding language. I love the ASMR of the click sounds. WOW
Duolingo teaches its sister language, Zulu, now but with slightly inaccurate pronunciation. Also begin with pronouncing the word “isiXhosa” and getting the 3 main clicks down. “Q” might take you a while to perfect but I promise everyone gets it after some practice.
I think the channel “Xhosa with Thando” or words to that effect does really nice video tutorials for pronouncing and conversation.
(Also, the guy here pronounced “Xhosa” so wrong I didn’t even know what he was talking about at first so. Yeah 😂)
Unfortunate its quite hard to find it on apps and on traslating but learn the clicks and vocab its taught cominly in south africa littral meant to be studing for a test but if u want to learn there are people on youtube that can help
I'm Xhosa and can say it is a bit difficult to find material on the internet. Even Google translate is quite trash lol, for fun I see if it can translate random things and it's mostly innacurate. I feel bad for people who actually use it to translate English to Xhosa.
I've come to know it really well (more than just on a "i grew up speaking it" level) by taking it as a subject from Grade 1 to Grade 12. But also really investing in learning it outside of school, so making use of libraries and Xhosa elders who had literary material in their homes.
@@FEMININELY_MEjah Google translation is usually trash
Koesa? It’s really not that difficult to pronounce 🤦🏻♀️

Isixhosa - the most difficult? What about Khoekhoegowab, Sandawe, endangered Tuu languages like N||ng & N/uu?
It is just his opinion. He is a Muntu person and does not realise that once you learn whatever dialect of our Bantu languages, nothing else is difficult. It does not matter whether we borrow a word from Chinese or German, once we incorporate it in our language, we manipulate it the same way
Exactly. This video was not researched well, Namagowab is way more difficult.
Exactly! Tshivenda??
All languages have African roots.
Love the clicking of the tongue part of United States children use to do this all the time and to form different sounds does require concentration.

We have click language in Tanzania the Sandawe and hazbe people
I learned russian, korean, swahili, and a little thai. This IS the hardest language I've ever come across.
Try khoi khoi languages! Xhosa is complex only for people outside of bantu languages... Khoi Khoi is the direct influence for the click sounds in xhosa and is a isolated language group
It's attitude any language is simple
Awukwazi nokuthetha isiXhosa
I'm South African and honestly we have more difficult languages, xhosa is super easy
Xhosa are Genuine Hebrew Israelites.
some say Sesotho is also difficult....the clicks of isiXhosa are complex but if the number of speakers is as high as 11 million... then the clicks can be learnt
UYesu uyindlela, inyaniso nobomi
As a Bantu from kenya, this language sounds more of a bantu language apart from the clicking part. That seems very difficult to master

That is why they said " through out Africa " to include other places
Those aren't Xhosa people
They are Ndebele/Mfengu... closely related to Zulu NOT Xhosa
Khoi has joined the conversation, I can’t guess a single word when they speak. One of the san languages in South Africa. Definitely has more clicks than Xhosa, by the sound of it
Koossa
Damn
Hardest language to learn is definitely the San language...
isiXhosa is hard but I'm determined.
If you guys think xhosa is the most difficult language to learn then ya'll should do a reasearch on damara-nama or as we call it in Namibia (khoi-khoi kowab). It has way more clicking sounds and it's actually where xhosa originates. It's a language spoken by the San people
I can speak isiXhosa but I don't quiet like it because I had to deal with strict teachers and fellow students who made fun of anyone who couldn't speak it, forgetting that there are more than one; this includes isiZulu. Most of them aren't willing to learn other languages.

The original speakers of the Click languages are the Khoisan. They the ones who suppose to get all credit.Feel like the Xhosa(Guni people) are taking their shine and it's a shame.Yes the Xhosa(Guni people adopted the click language through intermarriages with the Khoisan.
There are no "Khoisan" people, please stop using this dismissive term!
The Nguni language formed from the contact of the Khwemana speaking groups and the farming Ntu speaking groups which came to the region soon after Khwemana speaking herders also came. Yes, some of its words came from the hunter-gatherers but honestly, there is no shine here.
@@siyabongamviko8872 Apologies for using dismissive word. The problem is the NTU has no history. It Only denotes to a people of Bantu ethnicity. All clan these people have clan names but distinction is the language and DNA. There is a strong belief that the Bantu farmer must have come about from ancient ancestor called Phutu/Phtu/Ftu/(Phut). Ancient writers labelled this person to have lived in the horn of Africa along Kush. These people supported and worked with Egypt for many years. Ramses the 3rd carried a Bantu Y DNA E1b1a.
