I - DONT - WANT - TO - KNOW 😂😂 I spend a lot of money on everything. I don't even want to know how much water I'm using in summer to keep everything growing...
I usually say I'm aware of the tricks of the commercial world. But we're plants are concerned I'm very impulsive when I see an interesting plant I don't have the same self control and a bit of a sucker. Plant collecting can be expensive but worth the effort
If i wanted to recreate the garden ive planted over the last 5 years it would be 7-9k easy. Got big tree ferns at 175 now they are 600 etc. Looking to move soon and most will be dug up and come with me. ive ofset the cost by selling tetrapanax and colacasia and trachycarpus young ones.
Even on a budget year the expenses quickly add up. I'm over £400 on gas for the winter to keep the tunnel above freezing. Are you calculating electricity for the prop? I'll say £975.
As I'm a plantaholic our expenditure over the year should be quite different chris. Having lost a fare few palms last winter and replaced them with more and also lots a good sized yucca dasylerion my plant expenditure alone last year was about £1500. That did include £300 for the beutiagrus I got from nigel. Definitely don't intend spending anywhere near that figure this year but I have spent £150 in panglobal and I also bought a lovely schefflera macrophila from crug farm. Other than that spent a bit with farmer gracy and some seeds Compost grit perlite ect .But as I say I only plan to spend a portion of the money spent last year. Hoping for a drier summer this year? My guess for your expenditure this year is £430 lol
Hey Kris have a quick question about tree ferns, i have mine currently wrapped up in fleece as we had some cold night's a few weeks ago. But its been very mild recently, would you advise taking off the fleece if temperatures are not going too low? Thanks!
yes I would if you have the time to keep on top of it and able to cover again if it turns cold again. The most important thing is to keep them moist on the trunk. With all the rain and mist that shouldn't be a problem!
Thanks for your response, it's just the top foot or so of the trunk that is wrapped, the rest of the trunk is exposed. That being said would you still remove the fleece at the top? Appreciate your advice
Hi kris, another great video and a good way of getting anyone interested in a tropical garden. I live in the south east and is considered the driest part of the country, so watering is another expense for me, once the water butts are empty. My guess is £840. Cheers Paul.
Not realistic. You've bought gravel within the last year but your not going to include that? Any edging? I understand you don't want to scare the pants off other possible newbies but it would be nice if you were more upfront. It doesn't have to be one massive amount but its doable on a budget. But people see your garden and will not thank you for down playing the expence behind it all.
I'm going to record everything I spend on the garden this year, 2024. Its not a how much does to cost to create a garden. It's simply a video record of how much I spend in 1 year.
1k would be an easy guestimate. Include watering , power etc it will be more. Probably 1.5k.
Personally Including electric for heating in winter months and heated bed for germination. I would probably spend around £1200 a year.
Fantastic idea Kris! I look forward to seeing the update video in a years time 😀🪴

Imagine if b&m have trunked tree ferns though for £20 per foot, what then? 😅. I'm going for £735.20
I reckon Chris you'll spend @£800
450.00
Considering your not going to make any major purchases: I’ll go for £333
