Lyrics
What have I done?
What have I done?
How could I be so blind?
All is lost, where was I?
Spoiled all, spoiled all
Everything's gone all wrong
What have I done?
What have I done?
Find a deep cave to hide in
In a million years they'll find me
Only dust and a plaque
That reads, "Here Lies Poor Old Jack"
But I never intended all this madness, never
And nobody really understood, how could they?
That all I ever wanted was to bring them something great
Why does nothing ever turn out like it should?
Well, what the heck, I went and did my best
And, by God, I really tasted something swell
And for a moment, why, I even touched the sky
And at least I left some stories they can tell, I did
And for the first time since I don't remember when
I felt just like my old bony self again
And I, Jack, the Pumpkin King
That's right, I am the Pumpkin King, ha, ha, ha
And I just can't wait until next Halloween
'Cause I've got some new ideas
that will really make them scream
And, by God I'm really gonna give it all my might
Uh oh, I hope there's still time to set things right
sandy Claws, hmm
its nice that he didnt blame others for his failure, he understood that people couldn't understand what he was trying to do and accepted that he failed but did his best
That was beautiful, and so true. And Jack now understands what he did and why it was wrong.
I love this wonderful movie so so much and the style, characters, story, message and everything else. 🎃

I love that Jack isn’t evil. He’s just creepy and likes to scare people. He shows that he cares what happens to people if Sandy Claws doesn’t show up. I just love his empathy.
You are correct

This scene is legit mindblowing. Their rotating the camera in a STOP MOTION FILM and moving his suit tatters with proper secondary animation. MWAH. Geniuses.
The animation team is just- godly.
@@r1nc0re37 yea, the movie doesn’t even look like stop motion
@@thedestiny326 seriously! It’s so seamless! I’m so impressed by everything in the film!
@@r1nc0re37 me aswell
Of course! Henry Selick and Tim Burton The gods of Stop Motion. Jack's suit moves firmly and dramatically to Jack's movements
Jack's outfits throughout the movie:
Original outfit (Through almost the whole movie)
PJ outfit (When trying to figure out Christmas)
Santa outfit (Or should I say, Sandy Claws outfit)
Collapsed Santa outfit (This song)
Which outfit do you think moved along most firmly and the best from Jack
As much as you feel bad for jack here its amazing the messige that the director showed with the fact that jack knew it was his fault but was happy finding out what he was good at and loveing that and sticking with it

"That all I ever wanted was to bring them something great, Why does nothing ever turn out like it should"

And his hand movements
Agree it makes you feel him
Growing up, I heard someone say that the moral of this movie is a cynical “stay in your lane, don’t try new things because it will backfire”
But I think this song basically says that the moral is you SHOULD try new things and that even if it does backfire, at least appreciate the fact that you did your best and tried something new
Personnaly i've seen it as a "don't stay in the road, don't try to dive".
Jack start depressed, necause he always did the same.
Then he found christmas, and it pushed him to do something SO different to what he is than it led to a complete failure.
At the end, he decide he must accept to be what he's born for, being scary. But realize it doesn't have to be always the SAME scary things.
I agree. Just don't kidnap the guy/gal in charge lmao
Tried something new last night... it didn't wholly backfire but in the words of Jack: "That's right! I am the Pumpkin King!" It's done, now I just want to go back to being my old self.
Yes
Yeah, that is very cynical. The ending has the Halloween Town exposed to some of the pleasantries of Christmas and they’re definitely better off for it.
Jack didn’t really want to celebrate Christmas, but rather his version of the holiday. Had he embraced it wholly, I’m sure it would’ve succeeded, but he never stopped wanting to spread fear and fright. His view of Halloween just got repetitive, and he wanted a new way of going about it.
I would say that if I had to simplify the moral, it would be that people should embrace their differences. What we truly appreciate and excel at can only shine when we recognize how beautiful our differences are.
1:38 This is my favorite part Jack is so innocent and he was telling the truth he was wrong but he didn't intend to hurt anyone. I like when characters correct their mistake and learn the lesson.
Other characters in animated movies or shows do that
"Well, what the heck? I went and did my best, and by God, I really tasted something swell,
and for a moment why, I even touched the sky, and at least I left them stories they can tell, I did".
I love how Jack pulls himself out of his self pity and picks himself up instead of letting his failure keep him down.
Out of his anger towards the citizens of Halloween town for not listening his Christmas plan. Now after his anger is dragged out, I am like "Hey Jack, you do not have to be so dramatic after your anger issues"
😂
And for the first time since I don't remember when, I feel just like my old boney self again.
@@dashiesbbgurland I jack the pumpkin king ( didn't no what he had chasing something else) if that's not real life lol
Yeh, going throught a hard time and dispare, but then you spring up to this
He stopped feeling sorry for himself. Accepted his error, accepted not everyone will understand him. He atleast tried and gave it his best. Dusted himself off and kept pushing forward, and make things right.
To me Jack works here he realize he try to do something fresh and new only to see how much he screw up and try to fix his mistakes and knew he did something new but never worked and quickly move past it
I'm glad Jack learned his lesson.
Only dust and a plaque that reads "Here Lies Poor Old Jack".
I've got chills now.
I do admire so much that Jack took responsibility for his actions and realized that him being Santa was not meant to be most people would rather blame others for their wrong doing
He admitted that he was meant to be The Pumpkin King and focus on Halloween but he still wanted to do the right thing and save Christmas
@@SilhouetteJudasit’s unfortunate that Jack had to learn the hard way that he wasn’t meant to be Santa but you’re right in the end he did the right thing by saving Santa and he realized that even though he was always meant to be the pumpkin king he accepts that not just because it’s who he is but also because he knows that he has people who care about him and celebrate with him
Jack is an allegory of the artist. The creative who gets completely wrapped up in the pursuit of executing their craft. Only to have hardships from the get go, detractors, sabotage, and his own blind hubris. All to be blown into pieces after all his efforts. But Jack despite his failures gets up and remembers at the end of the day he lives to create, no failure or success ever great enough to end his pursuit of living out his art. Just lessons learned to be wiser, kinder, and more humble.
Not just that, but in Jack's Lament he says how he's suffering from another thing artists can relate to. Reaching a peek and not being sure where to go from there. Everyone praises him like everything he touches turns to gold, and he's very good at what he does, but he's in a deep rut from doing the same thing over and over as just variants of what he knows. Sometimes the best way out of a rut is a whole new experience, which he found, but then went overboard in trying to outright steal it instead of taking inspiration. Which I love in this scene how he doesn't just realize he's better off returning to his own, he actually says how the whole thing gave him new ideas to move forward! So now he's got the inspiration while still staying true to his own craft. Remember kids, its great to pay homage to works you love, but don't steal other people's stuff. :)
"Why does nothing ever turn out like how it should? Well, what the heck?! I went and did my best, & my god I really tasted something swell!" Is a very motivated lyric!
Of course. Thats all jack wanted, to try something new and different to what hes used to.
My favourite in the whole film🧡💀
I just love that part
It's wonderful to have a character like Jack to realize that he did his best and bounced back from his failures. I wish they'll be more characters like Jack. 💜🖤🧡🎃

Blind in a metaphorical sense. He's wondering why he didn't listen to Sally. That's one of the morals of The Nightmare Before Christmas, listen to reason.

Jack has a golden heart. As a kid I would’ve been terrified of him because as kids when we see someone scary we tend to judge them by their appearance. But with Jack he gives new meaning to the old saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”.

Can I just say that I really don't understand the arrangment they did on the official soundtrack. The vocals here are awesome and, well, sound a lot sadder. Danny overacts in the cd. I want the original.
I agree
Well bits and pieces of it are spliced into here too
I admit you’re totally right
I agree. I think he had a lot of fun singing it he overreacted a bit even when he performed it on the stage Jack sounds angrier than in the movie.

Why does Jack's voice sound adorable when it's higher pitched? (And sped up.)
This is by far one of the most underrated Disney songs it's so good and overall one of the best in my opinion
You came from the Disney version didn't you?
@@-metallix-3781 ?
@@morganallison9222 Disney didn't originally make nightmare before Christmas, Tim burton did
@@-metallix-3781 I know but nowadays its classified as I disney song
@@-metallix-3781 Ironically despite being one of the most well known "Tim Burton" movies, Tim Burton did very little work on TNBC, he was busy making Batman Returns, he basically made the story bible and everything had to be run by him but ultimately his involvement in the making of the movie was minimal at best.
Also, Disney did fund the movie since the beginning, but they got cold feet about it since it didn't really "feel" like a Disney film so they marketed it as "Tim Burtons The Nightmare Before Christmas" and released it through their subsidiary Touchstone Pictures, it was only after it became a big cult hit that they released it under the Disney name.
What i love about this scene is that Jack remembers who he really is and that he takes accountability for what he did and does actiins to correct it.
Jack has to be my very favourite Disney character.
One of MY favorites, too. ❤❤❤

i absolutely love this scene. mostly because he’s literally landed in a graveyard, after being “killed” which symbolises that he should stick with Halloween as graves are linked with it, and that dead people, (like him) are in graves. He knows it’s gone all wrong, and is ashamed that he wasn’t capable of deserving a normal Christmas. He doesn’t intend madness, he thinks the spooks and scares are normal, because it’s all he’s ever known and thinks Christmas will work out the same way if he added his charm to it, also, this is literally a stop motion animation, so the camera would move and the ripped bits of his suit would have to dangle individually, taking so much time. I have so much appreciation for this film:)
Don't forget that he is "caught" by an "angel".
i love jack and i have loads of stuff like bedding, nightgown and so much more I watch him every day
SAME!!!! My place is decked out and I had my walls painted to🤣. It's so annoying when your siblings get annoyed when I watched it almost every day.😂
I love the quiet “never” at 1:42
Me too, it's so adorable!
I love how at its core this movie is about burnout syndrome, something that almost everyone will experience at some point or another. You think you will never enjoy the job you once loved ever again, but all you need is a little taste of something else to get you back into the swing of it.
Bro when he sings the part thats like, "And for a moment, why, I even touched the sky!" IM FREAKING OBSESSED WITH THAT PARTTTT
Who else loved to watch this movie on Halloween 🎃🎃🎃 and Christmas 🎄??
I do!, both holidays just brings in some reality to the movie then in any other day!..........uwu i also like watching it on my birthday!!.............:D
Ngl, the way the singing voice of Jack hits that low octave on “here lies poor old Jack” was clean as hell ngl
It is sad Jack “failed” at his attempt at doing Christmas but at least he didn’t blame anyone for his failure. Even though Jack’s song starts off sad, he accepts he did his best at something new and was rejuvenated with his love for Halloween. Along with realizing he had to make things right and apologize to Santa Claus (Sandy Claws).
In some cases, it’s funny how books and movies can differ from each other:
In Tim Burton’s original poem, Jack is just plain sad that his form of Christmas wasn’t as he intended.
In the movie, he is sad that his Christmas was a failure. But instead of being down about it, Jack finds that he enjoyed it nonetheless, and it helped him rediscover his love for Halloween.
I like how Jack has a good heart but he's still a self absorbed celebrity.
He starts off feeling bad for others,
Then he feels bad for himself,
Then he starts complaining people just don't understand him,
Then he starts twisting his bad deeds into positives for himself,
Then others,
And ultimately he just revels in how great it all felt and how it helped him get his inspiration back for his craft.
But he is good natured in the end and so he snaps out of his narcissistic spiral just long enough to remember he's got things he wants to set right.
One of the greatest animated movies of all time
Danny Elfman one of the GOAT just the pain in his voice at the beginning of the song up until he realized that he is the pumpkin king.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is honestly my favorite movie. Jack is probably one of the best main protagonists in a movie. He's made mistakes sure. He's childish and doesn't really know what he's doing at times. But he never intended on hurting anyone. All Jack wants is to give a good scare.
