Be Careful of Packt Publishing

  • Packt publishing tried to get me to write for them twice. At the time I didn't realize what a horrible publisher Packt is. Thank God I told them no. I have dozens of examples of Packt crossing ethical boundaries to make a quick buck before their sucker customers figure out how bad they are. The worst example of this was charging thousands of customers $50 for a Go programming book "covering generics" that contained only a draft that had no basis in what would eventually be adopted as the standard. Everyone had to completely relearn generics---the right way---who read that book. Packt doesn't give a shit. They got their money. Sucks to be you if you paid without confirming that they actually did the minimal work to cover the topic accurately at all. Packt books are not only full of inaccuracies, they are completely full of basic English and spelling errors. Most people will be worse off reading a Packt book than doing their own research.
    Packt's strategy:
    - Spam as many techies as possible with ego-stroking praise without vetting them at all.
    - Get them to write books as fast as possible with no peer review and zero content validation.
    - Skip the expensive, time-wasting editorial process entirely.
    - Beat other (edited) publications to print but charge about the same.
    - Wait for more suckers to fall for their trap.
    Other considerations:
    - Occasionally something good comes from an author (not Packt).
    - Prefer more established publishers (who actually have editors)...
    - Addison-Wesley, O'Reilly, No-Starch Press, etc.
    - I have a problem with books in general ...
    - Books get out of date quickly
    - Follow people, not books and publishers

I've found that No Starch Press makes awesome books in my opinion.

I'm currently in the process of reviewing a packt publishing book, the further I progress through it the more I realize that whilst it's well written in terms of the text, the content itself is full of blatant mistakes, weird phrasing regarding technical concepts and overall you would get the same quality of information from any old youtube tutorial

As an author I can say that I had good experience with them. They have decent editors so what you're saying about the lack of editors is not true. I do agree that the bar on quality probably isn't as high as o'reilly, but I think they're getting closer year by year.

I have objective evidence to the contrary. You sound like one of the authors too full of themselves to accept the reality, the kind Packt is counting on, and there are *tons* of them in tech. The most terrifying part of this is the insinuation that they are "improving" when nothing I see in any of their books suggests this. Then again, most of the authors don't actually know what the fuck they are actually even writing about. If you are courageous enough (and not just a troll from Packt posting anonymous comments) you might tell us your name and the book you authored so we can make a judgement for ourselves (but I'm quite certain that will never happen). But judging from your 12 RUclips subscribers and zero published videos we have enough to rule out your opinion entirely. If you were an actual author of any repute you would not have such a minimal YT footprint and if Packt actually *did* ask you to author for them then you have completely confirmed my conclusions.

Honest opinion: I feel that reading Packt book is like reading a dictionary. No head no tails just reading a set of unrelated key value pairs. I am always under the impression that either the author / the editor is drunk when compiling the contents, making it unreadable. I don't think I will ever read from this publisher anymore. I have tried like 20+ books, same experience

2yrs later and this still rings true. I just saw someone publishing a red team book with them when said person has no red team experience. 😐😐

Unfortunately I have to agree with you on this, Packt books are barely books. Like, information is not comprehensive, quality is, gosh how can I describe, it's like putting together some blog articles and call it a book. And there are SO MANY Packt books on Amazon and there are surprisingly many positive reviews, I wonder if the reviews are real.

Most books don't get out of date that quickly. Otherwise newer editions would always be a completely new book, when usually it's like 5-10% changed.

Please speak more slowly and distinctly. Yes, English is my native language (born and raised in New York City), and I understand everything you are saying, but sometimes only with some effort. Listeners whose first language is not English would very likely not make you out. Thanks. // Yeah, Packt books are beneath contempt.

So if "The Go Programming Language" (Addison-Wesley) and "Go in Action" (Manning) are no good, which Go book would you recommend than? Thanks for this general perspective, which is useful to a noob just looking at Amazon reviews
