What does Kendrick mean when he says the word pimp. He frequently talks about the word and i know he doesn't mean it in its traditional definition."I can either pimp the situation or I can fall victim to it" or "...can pimp it to his needs". Can someone shine some light on this for me?

Magnum Pilos Its like a bad woman (a prostitute) can ruin a man's life, but pimps play smart and turn the situation to their favor.
Kendrick is just tryin' to pimp life, hope we all do eventually.

To be honest, it took me quite a lot of listens the whole way through TPAB to actually fuck with "u". It was only one time though when I closed my eyes and just listened to it, when it got to the part where the spanish housekeeper is knocking on the door and that crazy dirty beat slips in from left to right, and then when the beat fully kicks in like BAM! Shit just hit me so hard I almost started bawling my eyes out, it remains my favourite track after I experienced that.

  • @apseudonym

He's so self-aware. You can see it in his eyes, too. He's been through things, he's doubted himself, he's been used, he's been tempted, he's achieved things and perhaps not felt the elation that is expected when you reach certain milestones. He's gained power and felt powerless at the same time. I saw him back in 2016 and the energy in the stadium was electric. I will never forget it. TPAB is one of my favourite albums of all time. As an artist and as a person of influence, Kendrick exists on an entirely different level. This may sound pretentious as hell but he's like the Bob Dylan of rap. He's a poet.

I'm not a psychologist (though I'm studying it) and don't know much about Kendrick Lamar, but the way he looks around when he speaks, and then looks intensely in the eyes of the interviewer, shows that he speaks from an honest, intellectual standpoint yet you can see that he himself has seen many things that broke him and made him wiser, and stronger.

it means the more knowledge you get on the world the more sadness and disappointment that you will incur. simply because you’ re learning the true faults of the world. its like finding out your idol is a douche bag. it somewhat crushes your spirit. its like the saying "the truth hurts"

I've stayed away from rap and hip-hop for most of my life. I always used to think the music consisted of simplified and uninspired rhythm backing up hateful and violent vocals only aiming to gain popularity from shock value.
To Pimp a Butterfly was the first rap/hip-hop album I have ever heard, and holy crap was I ever ignorant on the genre. I don't think I have ever heard a more personal and intimate record. The flow of the album is just sublime. Each track, each idea, flows effortlessly into each other painting a mosiac of different experiences.
I freakin' love this album. This is the last time I judge a book by it's cover.

You can tell by the way Kendrick speaks that he's straightforward and real with you and not just bullshiting anything he states. What really got me was when he mentioned how his close friends died in the streets and how he felt survivors guilt on tour when it happened in the summer as he was overseas. He's really down to earth and honest.
