Thank you. Been growing sweet corn and sunflowers for years and sowing by hand was becoming too much as I get older and the patches became bigger. Last season I purchased and tried the earthway seeder to do my corn, it was a huge timesaver. I still did the sunflowers by hand and then wondered if the sweet corn plate would feed sunflower seeds. Right now I’m about to plant again for this season and will definitely be seeding both with the Earthway.
@@WoodsTreeFarm yeah I do, and I’ve learned the hard way. If you’re not planting much corn, put it in a “patch” instead of just one or two rows (this helps with pollination) and pick just one “flavor” or species. I’m not a biologist, but when varieties cross pollinate the results are typically less desirable than when just one type is growing. Multiple varieties can be grown successfully if you keep them in separate patches with a couple hundred yards between them. I don’t know what your situation is, I’m fortunate enough to have a huge yard as well as access to some unused farm land, so I am able to try 3 or 4 varieties in a season. Oh, and corn loves to eat, fertilizer should be applied while sowing seeds and again once established and about “knee high”. During the second feeding I put it on pretty heavy and wait about a week. If they don’t show signs of being slightly burnt(dried up)from the fertilizer, I’ll feed again and repeat until they do. Feed early and heavy, and provided there’s not a drought, they will recover, shoot up and fill out very well. It’s a bit of a juggling act, but error on the side of over feeding early on before the summer heat and they will produce.
@@WoodsTreeFarm you’re welcome, and good luck this season. I try to grow as much as I can gardening, because ya can’t eat the grass AND sunflowers are more pleasing to look at.
Glad I could help. I do numerous types of see with this thing now, and I find matching the seed plate to the seed seed size helps a ton to eliminate double or triple plants and just tape off some holes to get the spacing you want
Our sunflowers did well last year, so ramping it up this year and doing almost 6x the sqft this year. The planter Worked pretty well with the freshly tilled surface. I wonder how big we can get before getting a 3point seeder
We had ordered from myseeds.co, but seems they're offline right now. We've already expanded our plot for next year, planted annual rye for cover, and added fertiilizer and lime. Next year we're going bigger and looking at doing some varieties with shorter maturation. The mammoths take too long! haha.
I picked mine up secondhand and it's quite old, I think. The plate is labeled popcorn. Don't know if they still make that one. Last season I used a couple other plates for different types of sunflower seeds that were smaller. I just taped off some of the holes to get the spacing I wanted.
i wonder if it is possible to put down granulated fertilizer with it by taking the plow portion off (or not, depends on if you want the fertilizer placed deep in soil) and just running the seeder with fertilizer in it right beside there plants or just down a row.. maybe use the corn seeder disc..
It's not really sophisticated at all. Depending which seed plate is installed there are different size cups that pick up the seed and if the cup is oversized compared to your seeds then it will pick up multiple
GREAT VIDEO-- QUESTION---I HAVE SUNFLOWER SEEDS BUT THEY ARE DIFFERENT SIZES WILL THAT WORK IN YOUR SEEDER --WHAT ABOUT LARG PUMPKIN SEED WILL THAT WORK IN YOUR SEEDER THANK YOU
Yes it would work but you could end up with multiple seeds per cup and then you may want to thin plants after they sprout. The different brands of seeders come with different seed plates and there may be a pumpkin plate available. I don't recall if my set has one or not.
What kind of sunflower seeds? Just wondering about the length. I have some black oil branching type and different single stem procut. Think the procuts are smaller. Is the corn plate the biggest? How far apart does it seed?
We're doing mammoths, which should be about 18" apart and the seeder does 9", so we'll be a little tight. We could fill every other hole with wax, but we haven't done that yet. I figured we'll how this first batch comes up and plant some more later to have staggered harvest. I found this guide for the seed plates which was helpful www.mullerseeds.com/media/wysiwyg/pdf/Seedplates_overview.pdf
No I didn't. And plenty still came up. I was more concerned with deep eating the young plants, but we had good luck with that too and had a good harvest.
I feel for you pushing that seeder we have one similar by Chapmin. seeds went down 1.5" and was a pretty tuff to push at our height I had thought about some how adjusting the handle but ummm ya. lol. it is faster doing it like that but it takes a toll out of people that have less strength
Not that I know of. I just browse Facebook marketplace and craigslist when I need something. I like on Facebook you can set up notifications when new listings match your search so you can jump on a new listing that's what you're looking for right away.
grow pumpkins and even if you giveaway the pumpkins it would help with advertising for the christmas trees to get people out your way, unless you are looking more to wholesale the trees.
Might have to look into that depending on what else we decide to plant - especially if we do any veggies. My tiller is 36" so for sunflowers, I just drop a line down about 6" inside the tilled edge, then each of my rows are at least 18" apart. Thanks!

That's great to hear! I'm going to try a bit of sweet corn for the first time this year. Got any tips for a newbie corn grower?

Excellent info. Thanks so much!

Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for. I have same seeder and didn’t know which disk to use .

Sunflowers sure are a pretty addition on the farm! We had one of those seeders in the past, but it didn't work very well in our stony ground.

Good luck! My mom loves sunflowers, she has planted them a few times over the years.
Thanks. We did well with a smaller test plot last year, so upping our game this year and hoping to invite the public to come pick their own.
Good job Phil you had the whole family involved.
Yes. The kids were really into helping out with this task.
Where do you buy your seeds and what would you do differently next time?

My earthway planter came with a “corn” plate and a “sweet corn”. Plate. Are you using the sweet corn plate ??
Thanks ,Will

@@WoodsTreeFarm thanks a bunch !!!! I have all the optional plates ! I’m really surprised they don’t have a sunflower plate !

Yes! if you look up the earthway seeder they sell a fertilizer hopper add-on.
Thank you! Is this seeder sophisticated enough to drop two seeds at once?

@@WoodsTreeFarm Thank you so much! I guess thinning might be an option for me too. I was loosing sleep thinking I was going to do this by hand! Lol
Looks great! Did you do anything to keep the animals away? I have lots of birds that I am scared of eating my sunflowers.

This wasn't bad. The soil was freshly tilled and I only planted 3/4".
Thing works great
for sure! I was really surprised and pleased with how well it worked.
Hi prefer to buy second hand seeder like this. Is there any second hand farming tool selling website ?

I agree with the concept. We're hoping to accomplish the same thing by offering cut-your-own sunflowers.
How close can sunflower rows be? Never planted them before.
These mammoths are recommended to be about 2ft apart. We'll be a little tighter than that.
if irrigated agriculture 20 cm. if arid agriculture 25-27 cm for maximum yield.
What kind of herbicide you use?

Originally the seeder came with a next row marker which is adjustable. You can add one if you wish.
