This particular commercial was repeated numerous times during much of the early 1970's as I remember seeing this commercial on TV when I was between the ages of 4-5 years old. I also used to see a lot of Gremlin's on the road during that time. A few friends of my family even had a Gremlin and they said that it was a very good and reliable little car. On occasion, I still see a Gremlin on the road when I least expect it. WOW! What memories.
Ironically, AMC not having a lot of cash meant that they built more dependable cars with older technology and existing parts. Certainly more solid than General Motors' shitboxes at the time.
One thing the Gremlin was really reliable for was rusting straight through the floorboards so that your feet dragged on the pavement when you drove. Then again, I lived in the Chicago area and the salt on the roads just dissolved these cars to bits in a matter of a few years.
Wow!! It's very difficult to find AMC tv commercials, let alone one aimed at an "early" Gremlin! Thanks very much for posting this!
first car I ever had was the bright red gremlin with the white racer stripes, the shift was on the column,I adored it. My dad worked for an AMC dealer,I loved the demos he got !!
You can make fun of AMC`s cars if you want but they were actually very dependable and cheap to operate & gas mileage was above average.
Brad Hampton I will say that I really liked the Pacer.
Jon Kelley i was born in 2002 and i love AMC cars, even the pacer
The Gremlin was the getaway car in the terminator when Sarah and Kyle escaped the police station. -infinity to I mph in in six minutes. The terminator could have hobbled on one robot leg jumped in the back and tickled them both and then shot them.
Yeah Brad, I hear you. I remember friends of my family had AMC cars and they said that they were very good and very reliable. I also remember a few of my relatives having AMC cars as well. It's too bad that this particular factory's cars have become the butt of jokes and cracks by many, when in reality, these cars were better than many thought they were at the time. On occasion, I still see an AMC car on the road when I least expect to.
My late wife had an AMC Gremlin when I first met her. She always said that car was the best. She loved it.
I like The Gremlin
I had a 72 Gremlin and bought it brand new and it did me well for 12+ years and I would love to have one like it today
I still remember driving off the New Car Lot and Midway American in Wichita Kansas going east on Douglas Street!
And whatever happens, no matter how much it stalls, no matter how much it breaks down, never, ever, gas it after midnight...
+Tata Betita Or it will turn into a Pacer...right?
+Tata Betita Nice.
Tata Betita a Pacer should turn into the Gremlin.
VinnyDaQ pacers are awesome

Anyone here remember the special edition Levi's Gremlin? The standard seat upholstery was replaced with Levi's denim. That option would have set you back $134.95.
Very underrated Car! Sure, they were "Different" looking... but they had more interior space, comfort and standard equipment, than ANY other Car in its Class!
The straight six was SO good, at least it's block and bottom end *still* exist in TODAY'S Jeeps!!
During the early 1970s American cars “are remembered far more often for their power than their style, and ... throughout the decade, the character of cars became blurred. Only a handful of cars had real personalities...” the AMC Gremlin was one of them, “a pioneering hatchback”.[8] According to Tom and Ray Magliozzi, "it's easy to criticize this car now, because just about any car from the early '70s would look bad next to today's cars. They had no fuel injection, no independent suspension, no air bags, no anti-lock brakes, no nothing! But compared with the other cars of its era, the Gremlin wasn't bad."[101]
I would take one ANY day over the computer controlled crackerbox crap we have to choose from now! Progress my ass!!!!
Honestly american cars from this time were WAY better looking than cars from europe and japan, which were all 50hp teacup mobiles unless they were over 30 grand.
Not just no anti-lock, but four wheel drum braks.
Great Ad!!!!
nice AMC commercial! love to see these old car commercials...thank you for that video!!

I had a '71 in high school, my first car ever...even bought it myself from working at Carvel Ice Cream....wonder where that beauty is now 40 years later.
It's probably a manhole cover somewhere.
Yes. That sounds right. End of the year '70, showing off the new '71 models.
I love AMC cars from the 70s, parti ularly the Gremlin.
My 7th Grade English teacher’s father bought her a Brand New Gremlin late 1969 for her around Thanksgiving Day he Owned Goss’s AMC in Niagara Falls NY then her name was Judy I’ll never forget Her First New Car
Looks like Benny Hill made this ad. Lol! My first car was an orange 76 Gremlin. 232 auto. I drove it like the video. Part dune buggy part cruiser. I even went camping with it. Fold the back seat down and the front seat all forward and it made a decent bed. All I added was a thumping sterio with speakers in the quarter panels. And yellow fog lights.
My first car was a 1973 amc hornet station wagon yellow
Did they make a gremlin with Levi’s interior?
I love those cars
"Where's the other half of your car, toots?" I remember that one for Gremlin
a great classic car.. i'd buy one..
this was prophetic - when noones lookin it puts the 1987 gremlins grin on your face.
i love the domestic auto promo reels...i use to have the 1973 amc car line up including Jeep a while ago....
The first driver is veteran character actor Joseph V. Perry, who was the cook in a memorable M*A*S*H episode, where Hawkeye's double-weave long johns circulate through the camp.
My POPS had a gremlin... it ran 10s easily... maybe high 9s...
I've never been in a car thats pulled that hard since...
I went street racing with my Ol man as a kid...
Yea, it was AWESOME, now I'm lookin for a gremlin
in the 1/4? Bull!!!!!!
This is a video that seriously needs a "Yakety Sax" soundtrack added to it.
My first car..drove parents '71 & '73 gremlin x..dependable, easy to drive..
The vehicles themselves were wonderfully inexpensive to own and operate.
Why have I always had such a love hate relationship with the Gremlin, Pacer, Hornet, and Pinto. They had kind of a stigma attached, but they were all intriguing in their own way.
I will seek counseling and check back in about 6 mos. lol
I came here by cars 2
Yeah. It's a fun one.
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed. =)
You could keep the gas cap. People would always steal the gas cap.
The AMC Gremlin is not ugly, save for a ill informed, pack think, there is no rational reason for the Gremlin or the Pacer (well ahead of its time and inspiration for the Porsche 928). The Gremlin was brilliant use of an existing platform (Hornet) by AMC designer Dick Teague - a true genius.
1. Chilton's Automotive Industries magazine named Teague the 1976 "Man of the Year" for his designs and work on the AMC Pacer.[47] In the award's 12 year history, this was the first time an automotive stylist was so honored.[48]
2. Teague was honored with the EyesOn Design 1999 "Lifetime Design Achievement Award" for his accomplishments as an automotive designer.
Dare to be different.
I thought the Gremlin was a sharp looking car and in fact i still do!
Kevin McCarthy did the voice over for the commercial.
If you had to compete with the three biggest car companies in America, what would you do?
I'm not old enough to own a car yet but when I am I would love to get behind the wheel of a 70s compact car like a gremlin, pinto, or duster(those are compacts right?).
okay on second thought, maybe not a Pinto.
@@MrLouis-of3yl Duster is where it's at
hell yeah
AMC vehicles were above and beyond cars of their day........bad management is what put the company under- too many greedy people with their hands in the ' cookie jar'.
Beach chicks chasing the car LMAO!!!
That's how it was in the 70s, now you have to chase the chicks
Lol!
eldo59 - they didn't pass the audition because of their brains...😏😄😛
Love this commercial ! it`s from the times America sold the whole world the idea that belonging to the USA was a promised land and everybody would be happy .
To those one who criticizes AMC cars, this Gremlin and others like Concord Spirit etc wasn`t worst than idle Ford Fairmonts, Dodge Aspens, Chevy Vegas and GM Citations which were really the killers of the American cars industry`s trust and let today 65% of the consumers driving smartest and most dependable machines like e.g. Toyota Honda Nissan Hyundai and Subaru. AMC cars, except those assembling the renault line of Encore/Alliance, were quite decent automobiles which offered a lot for the tiny sticker price .
Julieta Lariat They were ugly to look at. If AMC had better designers they would have been more competitive. Their cars were ugly for the most part and the ones that weren't, looked like cheap knock offs of the big 3's cars. Whoever the design team was should have been fired.
+dstarks80 Honestly, you're way off base. The Gremlin and Spirit sold almost a million cars between 1970 and 1983. How can you say the would have sold more had they been styled differently? They were AMC's most successful car ever in a single body style. Secondly, AMC design team was so highly thought of in Detroit, it was part of why Chrysler Aquired AMC. AMC's design team took control of Chrysler's design department and created the LH platform cars that were a huge financial success for Chrysler in the 90's. They also created the Neon for Chrysler. AMC basically took over Chrysler with out Chrysler knowing what was happening.
+dstarks80 Ugly? Really? Two words: Javelin and AMX.
+dstarks80 They still look better than most of the monochrome jelly beans on wheels that pass for cars today. Thank you government mandates for ruining yet another pleasure in life.
By a retro review, Gremlins and Pacers looks charming and no-Dodges , no-Fords of today can beat their authentical AMC´s seal of true '70s flavor all of its own .
Looks like Joanne pflug as the carhop
I beLIEve that is the UGLY Green that my 1971 GREMLIN came in ,,,
COOP
...
Well, In Garry's mod.. you can find this car in a downloadable addon called Symphy's.
And I exceeded 1200 MPH in this car and crashed my own server.. *So thats fun!*
I did a double take on the farmer working the haystack - was that Gary Busey?
I don't believe so. My guess would be no.
That was actor Robert Easton popular 60's and 70's character actor. Played Moose Mallory the basketball star on the Munsters Episode with Pat Buttham as his dad/manager.

Thanks for the info, Bobby.
Your Welcome
+Bobby Cole Wow! Don't know how you knew that but nicely done.
This would be 1971 model year.

Car commercials in Ohio be like 😂
I wouldn't buy a car that acted like it had a mind of its own.
That commercial would only be better with the Benny Hill music playing in the background.
Where can I find the “where’s the rest of your car toots?” Commercial. I can’t find it anywhere
I came here looking for that one, myself!
@@StaciArdmoreI have looked everywhere. For years on and off. It’s just burned out of existence.
It's so sad AMC went belly up. I really did love their cars. The Gremlin, Hornet, Javelin AMX, SC/Rambler, the Ambassador and even the Eagle. I wasn't much of a fan of the Pacer.
no wonder why this car dont have 2 amber yellow lights on the rear taillights for turn signals...
both good strong bumpers...
today cars are big lousy weakness vehicles
The irony of the Gremlin being condemned as ugly when it was conceived to challenge the ugliest car of all time - the VW Beetle. Somehow the Beetle wasn't considered ugly or dated despite being both but Gremlin was both. It was criticized for being dated five years into its run when the design for the beetle more than 30 years dated in 1970.
American family cars are the absolute pits. It's HIDEOUS.
The Gremlin was the getaway car in the terminator when Sarah and Kyle escaped the police station. -infinity to I mph in in six minutes. The terminator could have hobbled on one robot leg jumped in the back and tickled them both and then shot them.
Such a misunderstood car, it's easy to talk trash and make fun of it, but I'd take a gremlin over any import or supercar. The gremlin was the best subcompact car of the 70's, it was more reliable, safer, and better built then any of the big 3's cars or the imports.
I would love to find the commercial where the gas station attendant asks "Where's the rest of your car, Toot's?"
I would love to find that commercial!......If I remember, it was 1974, I've not seen it since then, but she says "give me a gallon". and he says, "are you sure you're going to need all that?" or something like that....
So ugly, it's sharp!
Did amc engineers sign an oath to design the most horrific cars ever made, before they could start work?
So ugly, they sold almost a million of them and it was their most popular single body style ever (1970-1978 and 1979 to 1983 AMC Eagle/Spirit Kammback or VAM Gremlin in Mexico)
,
@105749745419977964477
Yeah, people back then also though polyester leisure suits in puke green were a good idea. Hindsight is 20 / 20, huh? By the way, how did they "almost sell a million" when they only made 671,475 Gremlins... IN 8 YEARS? (Hardly a "home run," buddy.)
It was a last gasp POS car from a dying American car company that made nothing but shit cars in the '70s.
Also, the AMX Javelin was their most popular body style ever. Quit talking out of your fucking ass about something you know *nothing* about.
OsbornTramain
All Chrysler wanted out of AMC was Jeep... period. The only reason they kept building Eagles was to use up excess parts. After AMC fucked themselves with the V8 Pacer, which nobody wanted, they were dead in the water.
As for AMC dieing, yeah... they did. Go try and buy a new one!
Yes, I am counting the Mexican market. THERE WERE ONLY 671,475 MADE!!! Again, how is that "close to a million?"
The Spirit? Really? IT WAS A DIFFERENT BODY AND MODEL! What the Hell are you thinking? We're talking about the *Gremlin*, NOT THE FUCKING *SPIRIT*! Would you go up to someone with a '64 Mustang and seriously say the '64 Mustang is really a Falcon... so you should call it a Falcon? Actually, I'd like to see you do that. They'd beat the shit out of you.
I'm not wasting my time responding to anything else you have to say because you can't even get the production numbers or names of the damn car correct!
+Milford Civic in the 50's
+Milford Civic Anyone with a civic for an avatar is not to be taken seriously.
Terrible car. 😖
What garbage we put out in the 70's. Japan thanks you.
Gremlin was far from garbage
If you had to compete with the 3 biggest car companies in America, what would you do? Introduce one of the ugliest cars ever made!...LOL...
I can think of many American cars that are uglier before I reach ANY AMC.
It was a piece of junk and ugly as sin but then that applies to most 70’s cars
