Full Synopsis
After harnessing the power of ‘artificial intelligence’ to reverse the environmental damage humans have inflicted on the planet, the AI spirals out of our control, covering the entire land surface in a dense jungle terrain. Now, only a fraction of the population remains, as the majority struggle to survive in this new natural world. A group of scientists, technicians and military personnel stay sheltered from the dangerous jungle surroundings in a top secret, underground R&D facility. But as they begin to search for survivors they discover a mysterious new force that is now firmly in control. Upon venturing deeper, they become exposed to the strict rules and customs that protect the new ecosystem, above all else.
Director's Statement
After researching the ongoing developments in the climate change debate and watching it become front and centre in mainstream news, Satori took shape in my mind as a large-scale, multi-faceted world with multiple storylines and characters. So really, the first challenge was to pull together a short story from the canvas which retained the original themes and maintained the feeling of a larger concept. I guess you could say that this short film is a proof of concept for the real story of Satori.
Within the narrative, my aim was to explore the human relationship with the planet alongside new emerging technologies; as well as gender stereotypes and social norms. I find it hugely interesting how quick life could change and how dramatic the impact could be, as large-scale paradigm shifts inevitably transform the way us humans view our existence.
The female heroine in this film is a comment on the need to maintain a ‘feminine’ or balanced approach to a crisis. She isn’t the quintessential twenty-something ‘action (wo)man’ with exaggerated physical strength in a female casting. Instead she is a relatable profile that maintains true strength and honest characteristics; including instinct, intuition, compassion and self-awareness. All of which are the essential leadership attributes needed at this time.

2020 demonstrates how much less oil a Conservative lifestyle consumes compared to a Liberal lifestyle.
Of bad movies?
@@okthen842 No, as in the virus, rioting, WW3, Ebola 2, etc.
The beeginning
The leading lady was a perfect choice. There was something about her energy, determination, confidence, and resourcefulness. Her face/facial expressions generated a feeling that if I could envision what mother nature would look like in human form, she would be it. There was that undercurrent in her of kindness, warmth, and a motherly protective gentleness. She was perfect, perfect, perfect in every way!
She was excellent. Great choice for the role.
She had a powerful facial expression just before he extended his hand, and perfect in the flow of positive emotions that followed in how she grabbed it.
The musical score emphasized the joining.
Just loved it!
A poor soldier is one who refuses all possible information...
Dialog volume is soft, while sound effects are loud.
Don't think I would talk to loudly in that place either
Definitely not to be viewed at an apartment at 3am
but did you like it or not...?
You are all soo spoiled...enjoy the project for its message...the technical parts can be worked out...
Walter Diaz the technical parts worked out brilliantly! These folks above are complaining that characters in a film are whispering and that scifi noises are loud - they might be able to find a film a bit more homogenised elsewhere then. This works brilliantly. And that soundtrack too - awesome!
So, the AI's solution was to cover the Earth with nanomachines and make humans ditch their technology?
Sounds legit.
- What an incredibly good actress she is.
Like her long ago, her performance here is a gem also.
- Jane Perry. 👌
❤️
Really enjoyed the direction and sound design here, I liked the new take on "scientist tries to warn military people who don't want to listen."
@Joshua Bressel The film is not only about the military here.. its also a metaphor about the old rigid way of thinking, seeing things with fear and competition, as opposed to a new and open minded way of seeing things with empathy and cooperation.
This applies to all situations in life, and how people view things.
They just put it in a military context here, to make it more interesting with action.
When to two "natives" yelled with glee at the end, I couldn't help but think they were cannibal's that were happy that they are going to eat meat tonight.
Suddenly, Swamp Thing rises up: "You have disturbed 'The Green'."
* All star starts playing *
From the Intro Text, i would assume the AI they developed, constructed some kind of "Forest Guardians" with integrated Nanomachines to fast-heal plantlife and defense mechanism to neutralize everything that could harm the Forest.
When the Intro text said, that humans created the AI as last options, i already thought that they messed it up. That could have 2 outcomes. This Movie showed the better outcome. An eternally AI-protected, global Forest.
The bad outcome would have been something like this:
Mission - protect the planet
Processing all Data....Humans are most threatening to the planet
Conclusion: To protect the planet, Humans have to vanish
I think Man Thing's more likely to be in this swamp.
@@smaragdwolf1 basically, an eco-friendly SkyNet--all the human elimination, none of the nukes.

Someone was obviously a great admirer of the Predator soundtrack.
Hahaha! I thought the exact same thing!
I can’t tell if you think that’s a good or a bad thing. The music in this film is one of the best things about it.
Yup, and just like Predator, the boneheads didn't listen to the woman who knew better. Lots of parallels.
I happened across the little snippet of a movie..Fifteen minutes of my existence down the toilet.
2028? That's too soon. Why do film makers in Sci-Fi always set their films so close to modern times? 2128, that would seem more likely.
Too soon?!? It's already too late for a complete turnaround right NOW. We'll be lucky if there will be any rainforest left by 2028, but seing as the madmen in this world continue to go unchecked that's probably just wishful thinking.
Grampa
Sounds like it may have hit too close to home for comfort. This is entertainment , but it also has a message and having it staged in our generation is supposed to make the people who who watch it think.
I’ve heard that secret government technology could be hundreds of years more advanced than what’s available or shown to us. It’s not that surprising.
Because to someone who is young and has no experience in the world 10 years is a lifetime. If you are only 20 then 20 years is literally a lifetime for you. But to someone in their 50s, 20 years is only a small part of your life.
@@vladdracul5072 The technology was too advanced for 2028, which is less than 8 years away. It's unlikely that man will be flying in the ships these people were or arming themselves with unlimited powered electric laser weapons that can instantly blow a giant hole in a tall tree...
So in 8 years we will have anti-gravity spaceships and laser guns, huh?
@Daryl Halliday Ahh, I see. Do they have this technology in underground bunkers at the edge of the flat earth? Another question, how have you been sleeping at night?
@@guitarsarelikestupid7200 Who needs sleep when you're a sentient AI?
In seriousness though, I wouldn't be surprised at prototype laser-based weapons existing. Probably 100lbs each and cause 3rd degree burns or even fire nearly instantly, not hand held and evaporate targets like these. But... existential fear is the greatest driver of innovation.
well not anymore....2020 duh
No, In 8 years, Blizzard will discover a way to project the virtual world of Warcraft into our reality.

Koyaanisqatsi: a Hopi Indian word meaning totally inexplicable film with no plausible reason for its unbelievable storyline.
Roger Stone:
Fool.
Roger Stone: I see what you did there. Accurate, too. Paul Klee: Ok, boomer.
Spot on
Roger: I knew I should have worn my forest green military fatigues and not my perennial garden purple LOL
Well this writing was ridiculous. The leader’s behaviour made no sense whatsoever, he made a conscious effort to not understand what was going on. No military leader would ever do that.
Ugh. Stupid commander. Beyond normal stupid. I would've just let him get fried.
The story evolved around that fact.
History is plastered with leaders that do that display pig-headedness and ignorance. With that in mind and that you are at liberty to suspend disbelief - the film rocked.
donotbeacockplease the entire story was built around his blatant idiocy which was beyond reality or beyond how any normal person would act. His behaviour made no sense that’s what ruined it, I suspend disbelief for the majority of what I watch seeing as my favourite genre is sci fi and fantasy
@@thethe5475 And yet, we are seeing this same blatant idiocy, which is beyond reality or beyond how any normal person would act, right now, in real life.
The trouble is, in this reality, we can't suspend belief. The shit that is happening now is *real* !
I see the two characters representing the polarity of two paradigms. One is the paradigm of isolation, of human vs other species and the other is understanding of the big picture of unity, the co-dependence of all species and their ecosystems. The end brings hope, as we come back to where we come from, our origin, the nature.
You took a lot away from this. Nice - I need to read more into films like you do - and it was a cool film too.
Ready for more!! The scenery is stunning!
NNAAA i'm cool lol thanks haa,,,,
Love it. Thank you DUST ! I think the world need something like that !
I don't understand why short films are plagued by horrible writing. The dialogue in this film is incredibly forced, the conversations are not natural in the slightest. The soldier doesn't need to be portrayed as an idiot for not taking what the scientist says with importance, but to seriously have him state himself how dumb he is for not believing her as a reason to why he is in the right is mindbogglingly pisspoor writing.
I can't believe no one in production ever brings up the fact this is a problem in their short films during filming. It's like it's become an industry standard to expect the writers to be worse than 5th grade students. If short films like this are suppose to give the inexperienced a chance to make something then we should all expect better from them, no one would ever be hired as a writer with this in their catalogue.
And at the end of the day, movies are stories in visual form so if the story is so bad the movie becomes unbearable to watch, then i'd consider this a complete failure even with the flashy visuals and scene direction. Step up your game.
starcraft and teargas -- I think the point throughout was that Evans was not respected by her peers, just as the Earth itself is not respected by its inhabitants. When Evans had to push her way through her own teammates it was a clear indication of how ill-respected she was. Then confirmed by Rogers constantly cutting her off. The fact that she had to plead (unsuccessfully) with the computer to permit the defrib to work to help save a life, the fact that the man would never listen to her -- those are the depictions of the problem -- both natural (human) and artificial (computer) -- that is to say, the issues and obstacles that perpetuate the destruction of the world. On the other hand, Evans was the one that recognized that it was the weapons (being seen as a threat) that was making them a target. As the woman and doctor, she is the personification of Mother Earth, the giver of life.
The dialogue could have been better, but the point came across well enough.
Yeah there's too much force feeding of how dumb/bad the males are. Her having to push through guys when they know she's up next to brief, him cutting her briefing short and playing down the danger even though she's supposed to be the expert, him covering her mouth after taking fire the 2nd time, him disregarding her warnings, him having to establish his dominance even though he's apparently the unit commander, etc. There's just so much here that didn't need to be. Oh but her behavior was vindicated in the end when she took the wild man's hand with a smile on her face. Give me a freakin break! I don't understand why they brought out their BFG weapon when he explicitly said their orders were to not engage? And why drop just 1 mile from the location when in the video the distance the probe thing got shot down could easily be a couple miles? You don't land closer to the danger zone when all the information you have is your shit gets shot down.
They need to seriously do some kind (if even cursory) of research or question someone who is or was military/police about how units and command structures work. B/c as an Army vet this level of command/unit incompetence on all sides is what drives me up the wall. I'm not saying it has to be exactly right but just having 1 person look it over would've improved everything greatly.
99% of DUST vids are slice o'life, no script, just a little moment of time, no begin middle or end. Reflection of modern attention spans and ability to think about STORY.
@@cedmusictube Listen LCD, All the things you just mentioned works well on paper, but a movie is a VISUAL medium and not a book, when you write "she says X" You can make it sound natural in your head but when a real life human being says it out loud in a situation depicted in the movie, it comes off as extremely forced and a case of god awful writing.
The point didn't come across well enough because it was constly making fun of itself.
If whoever wrote this mess was actually capable then all of the things you mentioned would've felt natural, smart and inspiring but instead here you sit in the comment section having to explain all of this stuff because the short film itself failed.
Just pretending something is deep or forcing in random bits of imagery isn't how you make something deep and engaging. That's like writing 101.
I simply cannot agree with what you've said because the points you've made are handled with the care of a bull in a porceline store in the actual movie. You are excusing bad writing and making sure that the writer behind this doesn't learn from his mistakes.
@@MegaGmoney84 You put it extremely well on how this short failed to be engaging. Internal consistency and a believeable scenario.
This is the start of a movie or series ! THX DUST, i enjoyed this more than most of your shorts !!
I enjoyed this very much, thank you.
For me, a really brilliant film, a very real vision of the world in the near future. Maybe with the exception of people flying in high-tech aircraft and using energetic weapons ... or people in general.
@Peter A. I wrote "near future", I didn't give the date, like in the movie.
Some serious drugs being smoked to come up with this captain planet reboot.
Only dumb stupid idiots smoke in the first place let alone smoking other drugs - people who do that are plain and simple - thick and brainless.
@@leetronix Maybe toy should do some research before coming out with blanket statements like that. It only makes you seem thick and brainless.
@Daniel LOL! Best comment for sure. I thought it was a bad Disney hack, but you nailed it.
Totally original, great prologue. More please
Usual story, gunsligning dumb miliatary guy goes into 'battle' with a scientist whose advice he actively ignores. Same old same old.
It's only dumb cause the plot says so, she didn't explain, or even have a basic idea. Just feels and of course blind luck. Plus gun, spear is there a difference
@Ricsi bacsi You are right my comment was mean and easy, writing from my chair ! But I still stand by it, so many sci fi movies with dumb military guys with big guns with the shoot first and ask questions later attitude. I always say that aliens Don't come to earth because they have seen too many of our movies.
@Ricsi bacsi Hi again, I know what you mean and mean ! I've had to delete comments because of people replying with the most dreadful language and insults. YT is supposed to be an exchange medium but sadly we humans often give in to hate. Take care xo
@Ricsi bacsi These kind of replies are petty. Low quality is independent upon someone else's ability to make anything better. It's called criticism. And it is legitimate.
What have you done besides Zip
This clip is definitely top class..10/10
love the ending... nature evolving and creating life that man cannot destroy.... beautiful...
Well that was electrifying!!! and definitely a different take on Gardeners World!!!
The production values here are very impressive.
@@ChrisPage68 As a writer, I can only say it's often the case that great producers find it hard to get a good script. (and writers often find it hard to get a producer to help them bring their stuff to life too)
I have watched several sci-fi movies and realised there is always the stereotype beef headed military leader and a science attache who is viewed with all the contempt and suspicion mustered. I like this movie for its environmental theme.
We need a self-healing forest technology.
To steal a quote from Babylon 5: "Worst case of testosterone poisoning I've ever seen"

Excellent work! (Bummer about the typo at 15:31)
Begs the question: does the AI expect humanity to go back to Hunter/gatherer stage with associated short lifespan etc? Or will it provide meds/education?
Richard PJ you're missing the bigger picture.
Ai indeed took over, but in the wrong direction and enslaved humanity from polluting or whatever and thats the side effects of AI taking over!
@@Bibibosh You think its bad to go back to the hunter/gatherer life style, but maybe the ai knows it better than all of us here...
@@fahey7335
Our instincts were designed for a primitive world like that, our emotions and our brain are not evolving along the technology as that is progressing much faster than human biology. So it is very possible we would live much happier or emotionally richer life there. I can easily imagine that. Like it makes sense that an AI designed to maximize human happiness would do that to us.
However you may think that technology will give us more degrees of freedom and that is generally will leave us with better more rich life. But who knows where will technology leave us, it may turn out that we will never be able to fully utilize technology cause our 'limited' brains or cause our evolutionary past, the AI knowing this will force us to live without developing advanced technologies and hence preventing us from the technological path that would be eventually a dead end to the human race.
Also AI could have reasons that we could never understand, yet these reasons would be really the best for all of us.
Its bit open ended scifi, its to entertain an idea and not to judge it.
It doesn't matter, peace is worth much more, and community and working together. We all end up in same place at the end. Bring back humanity.
Hook What would happen is we'd go back to 50% child mortality and a life expectancy of less than forty for those that made it to adulthood
Great work! I like your Channel.
"square miles radius" ok......
XD
LOL I know right
🤣
Lmao
That made me squirm too.
These short films are really awesome...it's just that all of the characters look like they just walked out of a mall with a coco-latte in their hands...they need some gritty looks.
LOL. Every bad Hollywood sci fi cliche condensed into 15 minutes.
what a loc! this is the beginning of a new video game!
The female actor was the only one believable - she was excellent.
But she couldn't formulate her info and ideas in short sentences... It was enough to say briefly: "I saw how these green-ray blasts from the woods reach the tree you have damaged and completely healed it!" but she has started a long useless talk in the middle of the extreme situation.
@@KumeOzoro Exactly - her attempt of speech was too analytical and too long for that moment. Nobody would gladly listen to it in such a dramatic situation. One should be precise and correct with words in the combat.
@@KumeOzoro If she is so analytical then she would understand that trying to explain by going on a longwinded rant as they were being attacked instead of just saying "You weren't the target, the blast healed the tree." makes her more believable to you?
I'm glad to know you've been in a lot of life or death situation with analytical people to bring forth this pretty hilarious take of yours.
yes smile only very excellent
@@KumeOzoro Patience is not a virtue when you are under attack by an alien species stuck deep inside enemy territory. Patience is what gets you killed there. Any analytical person would understand that having a tea and buiscut break while being shot at might not be the best course of action.
Very good film, I hope there's a full-length version in the works.
This short hits every nerve . A shoot first, dont listen to anybody ragged out stereotype that grates on me. Audio continuity is horrible but the camera work rocks , as does the film editor, wardrobe is wtf? I know I always picked purple as my go to camouflage in country, right LT?
It's not horrible , it's rushed and contrived and lazy. Do it again.
I Loved that little film, it would be great too see a longer version or a little sequel.
Not one of the most original sci-fi short subjects; however, it keeps simple minds entertained. More important, appreciate where it was filmed - some interesting flora and fauna. Not a bad hiking spot to keep one busy. Probably some great specimens for collection. Place was like an overgrown terrarium to say the least - enuf said!
Oh yes - this is a very cool idea to wear a violet jacket when you are a soldier and go into a freaking FOREST :)
I dont understand the complaints. I thought this was amazing. I was mad when it was over lol. This would be an awesome full length movie, and even better a series!
You can't be serious..... this is the mother of all woke toxic tree fairy fantasies. It uses every post modern trope and stereotype in the playbook. At best it shows how delusional the thinking of these ideologicaly possessed people are.
An instant hit. Make a movie, O.K?
It Would be something different from 'Avatar' and 'ALIEN'.
In fact, this is right up
Cameron's alley.
More Satori. Exciting premise.
Anyone who has seen how military commanders interact with their medical officers will appreciate the realism of this film.
I really enjoyed this. Seems there are alot of critics. Good job!
Good effort productionwise, but very weak writing and screenplay. I think the actors are probably good too but had to try their best with what they were given here. Suggested solution next time: use a script editor or have several people help polish it more before going from page to production. That said, you made it, and I still appreciate the work to make it so thank you! Do more, please. Keep going.
The moment of enlightenment
I think there's a feature length movie here, just needs some fleshing out, more backstory, context and could be another Spectral 🤔
like a lot of films on dust 🙂
Besides the audio, it really messed me up when she was trying to use a defibrillator on the dude even though his heart was still pumping and when the machine told her that the patient was deceased. A defibrillator is used if the heart has an irregular rhythm or if it isn’t beating at all. They bring people back from that clinically dead state (or at least try) she was also still touching the dude while trying to shock him, which is a big no no.
Thanks for killing the mood bud. Have you told any kids Santa Claus ain’t real recently?

What is a five hundred and seventy six square mile radius? Or any square mile radius?
@Peter A. Not his point, the issue is using square miles to measure the radius of a circle. A radius should be in miles not square miles.
@Peter A. What is annoying is people like you who get triggered by cultural difference. This is set only 8 years from now, where the US will probably still be using miles, so this measurement is accurate for this short film. However, the original comment is referring to the fact that a radius is of a circle, not a square, regardless of measurement. Not all of the rest of the world uses kilometres, the UK for example still uses miles on the road, as do a lot of islands with historic UK and US ties, like the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands.
They need to make up their minds, is it square or round?
@@largelarry2126 It's not about the shape of it, it's about how measurement is expressed. "Square ____" anything is a measure of area, not of distance. A radius is a straight line from the center of an area to the edge of it, usually (and probably the intent in this case) a circle, though in practice in situations like this it's not really that precise, it's not like anyone has gone out there and drawn a mark on the forest floor at the perimeter, it's just a rough idea. The word 'square' shouldn't have been there and if they wanted to describe the shape of the area more precisely they'd have used an overlay on a map.
